Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of personal and professional background factors, teacher preparation, and support on urban music teacher disposition. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the status of K-12 urban music education; verify the psychometric appropriateness of the researcher-created survey instrument; analyze whether and how teacher disposition varied as a function of background match/mismatch, teacher preparation, and support; and determine what combination of factors best predicted positive teacher Attitudes and high teacher Expectations. The Culturally Relevant Teaching Questionnaire was administered to K-12 public school music educators (N=447) from 17 American metropolitan areas. Results indicated that most teachers mismatched with their students in terms of race/ethnicity, childhood socioeconomic status, and childhood urbanicity. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the four intended dispositional constructs were adequately represented by the survey items. A MANOVA suggested that differences existed in teacher Attitudes and Expectations based on teacher race/ethnicity match with school and music populations, socioeconomic status match, urbanicity match, TQI, preparation, and support. Multiple regressions were completed separately for each outcome variable. SES match and support were significant predictors of Implicitly Prejudiced Attitudes; Urbanicity Match, TQI, and Preparation were significant predictors of Culturally Relevant Attitudes about both Teaching and Music; SES match also predicted Culturally Relevant Attitudes about Teaching. Race/Ethnicity Match with Music Students, SES Match, Preparation, and Support were significant predictors of Expectations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of music teachers in urban elementary schools. Title-I public elementary schools (N = 135) in Miami-Dade County were surveyed for demographic information, and fifty-six of the music teachers from those schools participated in the survey designed for this study. The survey was intended to accumulate data regarding the independent variables of student demographics, teacher demographics, student/teacher demographic differences, teacher training, and teacher support; the dependent variables examined were teacher attitudes about urban elementary music teaching and teacher expectations of their urban elementary music students. Results demonstrated that demographic factors were correlated, and most of the teachers mismatched demographically with their students. Professional support and the percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch correlated with attitudes. The variables did not correlate with expectations, but because of a strong correlation with attitudes, expectations may have been indirectly affected by support and the percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Support was the single predictor for attitudes, and when computed as an independent variable, attitudes were the sole predictor for expectations. No significant main effects or interactions between the variables were found.

Specifically, the research questions asked were: 1) What are the major challenges and gratifications experienced by urban instrumental music teachers? 2) What teaching strategies best promote musical achievement and engage urban students? 3) What are the most effective strategies for recruiting and retaining urban music educators? A review of literature provided information on the characteristics of urban culture, the needs of music education in urban schools, culturally relevant teaching, diversified teacher preparation, the recruitment and retention of urban teachers, and profiles of successful urban teachers. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to provide a more detailed and comprehensive analysis of teacher perspectives. A survey questionnaire was sent to music educators in the Atlanta Public School system (N = 70). In addition, urban music educators (n = 6) were interviewed to gain additional insight regarding the specific challenges and practices of urban educators. Results of the study indicated that: -Although a major challenge is present in the need to address cultural differences and connect with the students, teachers value the opportunity to instill the values experienced in musical performances0́4teamwork and the belief that success is possible through hard work and perseverance.-Successful urban teachers set boundaries and remain consistent in their daily expectations and procedures0́4while letting students know that they genuinely care about them.-Music teacher education programs should ensure that all graduates are well prepared to teach in an urban environment and have been exposed to diverse types of school populations.

Many teacher-educator preparation programs across the nation modify curriculums to meet the concerns of an ever-changing society, including socioeconomic status, funding deficiency, and cultural diversity. This study utilizes a qualitative research study with the topic “Success vs. Survival” to identify teacher perspectives exploring and documenting music programs specific to schools in south metro Atlanta. The researcher examines root causes, suggestions from study participants, and suggestions for improvement. Although many publications address this topic, there are few location-specific essays. This study utilizes a qualitative research study to identify teacher perspectives exploring and documenting music programs specific to schools in south metro Atlanta. The thesis includes survey and ethnographic research in the form of surveys and interviews from the perspective of the subjects, who are music teachers of all grade levels. Finally, the dissertation examines the challenges of teaching music education in urban and low-income communities. It offers the professional experiences and perspectives of music educators who serve Title I and low-income school districts in south metro Atlanta. Using the testimonies and experiences of experts in the field, the author provides insight into some methods and means to recondition these issues.
