Book excerpt: Recognized as one of the most powerful education reform initiatives in the past decade, the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) was signed into law for the purpose of improving student academic achievement so as to ensure a quality education for all students, including those with disabilities. As teachers work with more students with disabilities in the general education setting, teachers are searching for effective strategies that will decrease problem behavior and increase learning results. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher administered behavior-specific praise on promoting positive behavior in students, as demonstrated by exhibiting on-task behavior and decreasing negative behaviors, in addition to examining the feasibility of delivering it at 1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute intervals in three different general or special education classrooms. An elementary school was selected for the site of the study. Three students served as primary participants, and three teachers (i.e., two general education and one special education teacher) served as secondary participants. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to assess the overall effects of the intervention. Results indicated that teacher administered behavior-specific praise is an effective, easy to use evidence-based practice which can be used by teachers for the purpose of promoting positive academic and social behavior in students, including those who have been and are at risk for being identified as having a disability.

Book excerpt: Positive reinforcement, in the form of praise, is one of the most powerful tools used in effective programming by classroom staff for all types of educational environments. It is not only important for staff to use praise but to also specify the behavior for which the praise is being given. Increasing behavior specific praise in different educational settings was the aim of this current study. Two settings were observed in which a MotivAider tactile prompting device was worn. This device prompted the teacher and one instructional assistant to provide behavior specific praise once every minute during a 10 minute session. The researcher recorded the frequency of behavior specific praise, non-behavior specific praise and corrective statements delivered to students by each participant. It was discovered that using the MotivAider increased the amount of behavior specific praise delivered by all staff members whilst they were receiving the prompt themselves. It was also demonstrated that some participants reacted to the other participant's increased frequency of praise, in that setting, when they themselves were not receiving the tactile prompt. A third finding was that an increase in the frequency of praise statements did not result in a decrease in the frequency of corrective statements.

Book excerpt: Disparities in academic and social outcomes for ethnically diverse students in educational settings has been identified in the literature as the achievement gap. This study examined the impact of teacher training interventions on establishing equity in teacher implementation of a common positive behavior classroom support strategy, behavior-specific praise in four elementary classrooms. Teacher self-monitoring and written performance feedback were used to facilitate teachers to improve classroom practices by establishing proportionate praise and discipline practices across racially diverse students. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the impact of self-monitoring and written performance feedback with and without equity-focused procedures on teacher delivery of behavior-specific praise and reprimands and their perception of student classroom behavior. Results indicated that the typical self-monitoring and written performance feedback were effective in increasing the participating teachers overall rates of delivering behavior-specific praise and reducing reprimands; however, substantial disparities in praise delivery were observed between demographic groups across all four teachers. Additional feedback regarding equity was necessary for reducing disparities in teacher behavior between demographic groups. The results also indicated that teacher perception of student classroom behavior improved, demonstrating decreased levels of disruptive student behavior and increased levels of respect and student engagement across all participants.

Focusing on the evidence-based teaching skill of offering behavior-specific praise (BSP), the researcher worked with 3 elementary-level general educators in a tiered model of instruction, commonly known as response to intervention (RtI). Although RtI commonly provides targeted instructional support to students, this study, a systematic replication of Myers, Simonsen and Sugai (2011), used the RtI framework to provide professional development to teachers. The researcher also tracked the behavior of 3 students, identified by the teachers as having behavioral difficulties, who became the focus of each teacher's BSP. Results showed rapid and somewhat sustained increases in rates of BSP following the Tier 2 and 3 interventions (video self-monitoring and peer coaching), but not following the Tier 1 intervention (schoolwide in-service training). Averages for all 3 students' on-task behavior increased with increased teacher BSP. Implications for educators, administrators, and researchers are discussed.

Nevertheless, teachers' adherence to strategies learned during trainings often decline when external supports are removed (Codding et al., 2015; Oliver et al., 2015) which may lead to challenges in the consistent and accurate implementation of EBP in classroom settings (Shernoff et al., 2020). Performance feedback and self-monitoring have been used to address these challenges and promote teachers' use and fidelity of EBP in the classroom (Scheeler et al., 2004; Oliver et al., 2015). The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of performance feedback and self-monitoring on teachers' delivery of behavior specific praise (BSP) in their classrooms using a multiple baseline design across participants. Results suggest performance feedback was successful in increasing the rate of BSP while self-monitoring maintained BSP at a predetermined goal, in the absence of observation or feedback for two teachers. These results align with prior literature, suggesting that performance feedback is effective in changing teacher performance and self-monitoring is potentially a viable strategy to promote maintenance in EBP in the absence of external supports and feedback.
