Book excerpt: This book presents a holistic view of the complex and dynamic responses of plants to nanoparticles, the signal transduction mechanisms involved, and the regulation of gene expression. Further, it addresses the phytosynthesis of nanoparticles, the role of nanoparticles in the antioxidant systems of plants and agriculture, the beneficial and harmful effects of nanoparticles on plants, and the application of nanoparticles and nanotubes to mass spectrometry, aiming ultimately at an analysis of the metabolomics of plants. The growing numbers of inventions in the field of nanotechnology are producing novel applications in the fields of biotechnology and agriculture. Nanoparticles have received much attention because of the unique physico-chemical properties of these compounds. In the life sciences, nanoparticles are used as “smart” delivery systems, prompting the Nobel Prize winner P. Ehrlich to refer to these compounds as “magic bullets.” Nanoparticles also play an important role in agriculture as compound fertilizers and nano-pesticides, acting as chemical delivery agents that target molecules to specific cellular organelles in plants. The influence of nanoparticles on plant growth and development, however, remains to be investigated. Lastly, this book reveals the research gaps that must be bridged in the years to come in order to achieve larger goals concerning the applications of nanotechnology in the plants sciences. In the 21st century, nanotechnology has become a rapidly emerging branch of science. In the world of physical sciences, nanotechnological tools have been exploited for a broad range of applications. In recent years, nanoparticles have also proven useful in several branches of the life sciences. In particular, nanotechnology has been employed in drug delivery and related applications in medicine.

Book excerpt: The effect of pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on plant growth and gas exchange was investigated in Arabidopsis thaliana. To date there has been no research on the effects of SWCNTs on whole plant physiology. A. thaliana seeds were directly grown in growth medium containing SWCNTs concentrations of 24.93ug/ml and 53.55 ug/ml. control plants were grown in media containing distilled water. I determined growth by measuring dry mass of plants. I determined gas exchange by measuring photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates, and water use efficiency. I also examined the following physiological mechanisms that would limit plant growth: ATP and NADPH supply to light reactions through photosynthetic light response curves, and rubisco activity through photosynthetic CO2 response curves. The presence of SWCNTs in the growth medium had no impact on the whole plant dry weight accumulation in any of the six experimental trials I carried out. Plants grown in growth media containing SWCNTs of a concentration of 24.93 ug/ml (4 experimental trials, n=12) and 53.55 ug/ml (1 trial, n=3) did not significantly influence any gas exchange variable after 21 days of growth. I also examined gas exchange variables after 7, 14, and 21 days of growth (1 trial, n=3). In this trial, there was a statistically significant treatment and time effect on photosaturated photosynthetic rate, photosynthetic efficiency and water use efficiency. My study illustrates that pure SWCNTs at realistic environmental conditions have no serious negative effects on plant growth and gas exchange; however, they may affect plant developmental rates. These findings have implications for plant and animal health, public awareness, and environmental remediation.

Book excerpt: The invention relates to a chemical vapor deposition process for the continuous growth of a carbon single-wall nanotube where a carbon-containing gas composition is contacted with a porous membrane and decomposed in the presence of a catalyst to grow single-wall carbon nanotube material. A pressure differential exists across the porous membrane such that the pressure on one side of the membrane is less than that on the other side of the membrane. The single-wall carbon nanotube growth may occur predominately on the low-pressure side of the membrane or, in a different embodiment of the invention, may occur predominately in between the catalyst and the membrane. The invention also relates to an apparatus used with the carbon vapor deposition process.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received much attention from both the scientific and industrial communities due to their structural properties and unique morphology. There has also been growing interest in vertically aligned single walled carbon nanotubes (VA-SWNTs) because of their suitability for building devices such as hydrogen storage and super capacitors. Various methods including chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have been developed for growing VA-SWNTs. Among them is alcohol catalytic CVD which is well known for its economic viability, comprehensive substrates selectivity and good yield of VA-SWNTs. In order to fully understand the growth mechanism of those CNTs, an examination of the role of inputs like hydrocarbon flow rate, reaction time, chamber temperature, and pressure is essential. This work studies the controllability of VA-SWNTs growth by a hybrid process model of an experimental design and an artificial neural network (ANN).

Book excerpt: The effects of oxygen on Fe-catalyzed carbon nanotube (CNT) growth on Ta substrates was studied. CNTs were grown on Fe thin-film catalysts deposited on silicon substrates via exposure to C2H4 in a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) furnace. Heating for CVD growth causes the Fe film to dewet to form catalyst particles. During CVD, the sample was exposed to gas mixtures of Ar, Ar/O2, H2, and C2H4. Experiments were performed with varying amounts of oxygen from mixing of the Ar and Ar/O2 carrier gas, as well as pre-annealing samples in oxygen or hydrogen-rich environments. Samples were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that when an optimum amount of oxygen was introduced, taller CNT carpets were observed. Pre-annealing samples in an oxygenrich environment shows additional benefits in carpet growth. In contrast, pre-annealing in a hydrogen-rich environment counteracts the benefits of introducing oxygen during the growth phase. Coarsening of the catalyst particles was suspected as a reason for the difference in growth patterns, and pre-annealed sample morphologies were characterized without C2H4 flow. AFM scans show apparent coarsening in samples exposed to hydrogen-rich environments, and reduced coarsening in the samples exposed to oxygen-rich environments.
