Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

All students involved in the study were fluent at grade level, or on track to be fluent at grade level, by the conclusion of the school year. Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

Book excerpt: After pre assessing students in a third grade classroom, the researcher noted four students, scoring below the 20th Percentile on the reading portion of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) exam, fall, 2008, in a pilot study. As the researcher further assessed these students, it was noted that these students lacked fluency and vocabulary skills. Focusing on fluency combined with individual, vocabulary instruction, the researcher individualized each of the students' reading program within the regular education classroom. Each of the four students was working at their current level of reading, entering the third grade and progressing throughout the school year. The researcher used a combination of the Power Reading program and coupled it with individual, vocabulary strategies to assist readers with fluency and comprehension. As their reading progressed, students were challenged to next levels. Data was analyzed using the NWEA assessment, Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessment and Kansas State Reading Assessments during the course of the school year to mark progress. All four students in year one exited the bottom quartile of the NWEA, gained two reading levels according the Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessments and scored in the top twelve percent of the Kansas State Reading Assessments. The pilot study was replicated in the school year, 2009-2010, Year Two, with ten students with similar needs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two different fluency-based reading interventions as determined by fluency progress monitoring rates of participants and teacher-perceived usefulness toward the progression towards the participants' grade-level goals as measured on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) standardized test. This study was precipitated by the recent adoption of a Response to Intervention (RtI) approach in the school setting. This approach is designed to increase student achievement of students who are "below," "at," or "beyond" grade level expectations. This study specifically looked at students who are categorized as "below" grade level in reading achievement. The Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) intervention was utilized with 6th and 7th grade students during the first research period (Study 1) and "The Six-Minute Solution" was used with a group of 5th and 6th grade students during the second research period (Study 2). Results indicated the interventions did have an overall positive effect on the fluency rates and the standardized tests scores achieved by the students in this study.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.

As students progress from the early to middle elementary years, curricula expect that they will transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Too often, however, students are left behind because they struggle to develop reading proficiency before this transition. With the understanding that they require early and intense intervention to ensure later academic success, finding the most effective and efficient methods to foster reading proficiency among struggling readers is critical. This study examined the differential effects of three variations of repeated readings (with traditional whole word drill, with word retell, and with both traditional whole word drill and word retell) on core literacy components among delayed third grade readers. After random assignment to these three conditions, student performance was analyzed on the constructs of oral reading fluency, oral reading accuracy, reading comprehension as measured by word retell and comprehension questions, and intervention efficiency. Findings indicated that there were few significant differences among the three conditions. Results did indicate that students in the traditional whole word drill and word retell condition improved significantly more in oral reading accuracy from initial to repeated reading than did students in the word retell condition. Results and limitations of the study are discussed, and directions for future research are recommended.

For elementary school teachers, helping students become proficient readers is one of the greatest impacts they can make in a studentâ€TMs academic career. It is essential that students receive reading strategies in the classroom that have strong research support. Instructional strategies that have been shown to improve reading fluency include: repeated reading, listening passage preview, and phrase drill. Through the use of such evidence-based, procedurally standardized intervention strategies, teachers may be able to make meaningful contributions to improve studentsâ€TM reading fluency. This study was conducted in an effort to bridge research to practice by offering an example of effectiveness (versus efficacy) research on a multi-component, evidence-based reading fluency intervention referred the Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) Program. The primary purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the HELPS Program with low-performing second grade students when implemented by four classroom teachers and teacher assistants in a minimally controlled setting. Results from the study suggested that 29 students who received HELPS significantly improved (from pre-test to post-test) on the measure of basic reading competence when compared to a control group of 30 students, with low-performing students who received HELPS making significantly larger reading gains than students who did not receive the program. In addition, the study demonstrated that such outcomes are achievable when teachers and teacher assistants implement the program. Given these findings, HELPS appears to be a useful and practical tool for educatorsâ€TM use in elementary school settings.

Students who fail to achieve reading fluency experience multiple negative consequences that affect their academic and social growth, options, and success. Although considerable amounts of research on reading fluency interventions have been conducted with younger developing and struggling readers, little is known about the effects of such interventions on the reading skills of high school students. A single subject across participants design was employed to measure the effectiveness of two, easy-to-implement, reading fluency interventions on the reading fluency and comprehension of 18 high school students with learning disabilities (LD) who read between the first- and sixth-grade levels. A two-way ANOVA was also used to determine the impact of two interventions and initial reading level on the reading fluency and comprehension as measured by the Gray Oral Reading Test -4, the Test of Word Reading Efficiency, and the Test of Silent Word Reading Fluency. Results suggested that participants whose initial reading skills fell between the first- and third-grade levels made fewer gains in reading fluency and comprehension of connected text during intervention than participants who entered intervention reading between the fourth- through sixth-grade levels. Limitations and implications for future research are discussed.
