Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of relaxation techniques on the anxiety, self-esteem, and performance levels of 20 Ss from the Women's Cross-Country Team at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse over a 6 wk period. During the first three weeks, the entire 40 member team remained as one large group to establish standardization thus serving as their own control group. The team was then divided into a relaxation group and a mental imagery group. The STAI and SEI tests were administered before and after the 3 wk control period and then again after the 3 wk experimental period. A two way ANOVA with repeated measures was utilized to make comparisons between the two experimental groups and with the relaxation group itself. The significance of the change over time within the relaxation group was analyzed using the Scheffe post-hoc test. The null hypothesis not rejected in regard to the self-esteem or physical performance levels of the Ss in the relaxation group. The relaxation techniques caused a significant decrease P .05 in the state and trait anxiety levels of the Ss. There was no significant difference P .05 between the two experimental groups in reducing the state and trait anxiety levels or increasing the self-esteem levels of the Ss.

Book excerpt: "Introduction: Anxiety affects nearly 20% of the United States population and can have a significant impact on athletic performance. However, athletes can mitigate the effects of performance anxiety through the use of mental skills and mindfulness training. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine if a mental training and mindfulness intervention could reduce anxiety and enhance performance in distance runners. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of the study was that athletes would experience less anxiety, increased levels of mindfulness, and improved performance following a four-workshop intervention. Methods: Distance runners engaged in a mental skills and mindfulness training program where we measured pre, during and post-anxiety levels. Anxiety was measured on the Competitive State Anxiety Scale-2 (CSAI-2) with modifications to the scale to measure intensity of cognitive and somatic anxiety, and self-confidence, and mindfulness was measured with the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). In addition, running performance and effort was measured pre, during and post intervention. Analysis: Means and standard deviations were calculated to investigate variable-level differences. In addition, to investigate participant-level effects, we created individual athlete narratives. Results: Overall, scores for cognitive and somatic anxiety for all three athletes were below the midpoint of the scale indicating that the athletes in general had low levels of both types of anxiety. Mindfulness scores stayed relatively consistent during the program. Discussion: Changes in anxiety varied depending on individual athletes while changes in mindfulness were minor for all participants. These relatively small changes highlight that duration of the intervention may play a role in how effective an MST and Mindfulness program may be for athletes and future studies should aim to extend the duration of the intervention for both MST and Mindfulness past 4-weeks."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport Psychology, 2nd Edition provides a synthesis of the major topics in sport psychology with an applied focus and an emphasis on achieving optimal performance. After exploring the history of sport psychology, human motivation, and the role of exercise, there are three main sections to the text: Performance Enhancement, Performance Inhibition, and Individuals and Teams. The first of these sections covers topics such as anxiety, routines, mental imagery, self-talk, enhancing concentration, relaxation, goals, and self-confidence. The section on Performance Inhibition includes chapters on choking under pressure, self-handicapping, procrastination, perfectionism, helplessness, substance abuse, and disruptive personality factors. While much of the information presented is universally applicable, individual differences based on gender, ethnicity, age, and motivation are emphasized in the concluding section on Individuals and Teams. Throughout, there are case studies of well-known athletes from a variety of sports to illustrate topics that are being explored.

Book excerpt: Athletes are naturally exposed to significant psychological challenges in sports, but do not wait helplessly for the assistance of sports psychologists or trainers. Instead, they practise one form or another of self-regulation. Self-talk in Sport explores one such self-regulatory strategy: self-talk, the inner voice that accompanies every human being throughout their lives. Over time, research has revealed many secrets of self-talk in sport, though many others remain unveiled. This book offers you the opportunity to discover the multiple identities of our self-talk, how the “inner coach” serves as a rational counterpart to the irrational self, and what we need to do to develop our inner voice to reach its maximum self-regulatory potential. There is a general need for concrete interventions in sport, exercise, and performance psychology. In addition, the autonomous functioning of people is a central aim of psychological interventions that align with positive psychology and focus on people’s strengths rather than weaknesses. In this volume, researchers and applied practitioners are shown how they can use self-talk interventions to strengthen people’s rational self-regulation in order to deal with a variety of situations that apply to both sport and other exercise and performance contexts. Since self-talk is a tangible result of cognitive processes and inner experiences that researchers and applied practitioners can barely access, Self-talk in Sport is a tool for sports psychologists to understand and interact with hidden parts within athletes that have a major impact on sport and exercise experiences and performance. A book demonstrating the diverse – both rational and irrational identities – of self-talk, as well as specific interventions to change the inner dialogue of athletes, is a fundamental piece in the education of sport scientists.

Book excerpt: Adolescent girls have been shown to be at increased risk for experiencing depression (Atwater, 1996), emotional distress (Covey & Feltz, 1991), low self-esteem (Bush & Simmons, 1987), and dissatisfied body image (Covey & Feltz, 1991). Female athletes are more likely to attribute successful outcomes to factors independent of themselves (e.g., luck rather than skill) (Hendy & Boyer, 1993). Such cognitive distortions provide an unrealistic framework from which girls evaluate themselves and situations in which they are involved. "Thinking for Success" is an intervention designed to provide adolescent girls with active strategies to overcome self-defeating cognitions. The intervention was conducted with a sample of 32 female-adolescent athletes on a high-school cross-country team. Results suggested that the intervention improved participants' levels of self-efficacy for improving their body image, coping with daily life stress, managing cross-country and physical-fitness abilities, and implementing workshop skills. There was a suggestive, but non-significant, trend for lowered trait anxiety. Number of thought logs completed and level of efficacy for practicing workshop skills significantly predicted this decline in trait anxiety. Contrary to expectations, athletic performance was not affected by intervention participation. Power analyses indicated that the current sample size was sufficient to detect medium and large effects, though a larger sample size would have been needed to detect small effects.
