Book excerpt: The current mathematics curriculum intertwined with the Common Core State Standards has created a struggle for teachers and struggling students in the classroom to find time and successful ways for interventions. Research has shown for decades that tutoring has been a useful strategy employed with students and over time has been altered through trial and error to create different types of tutoring based upon student needs. Extensive previous research using Reciprocal Peer Tutoring (RPT) has occurred at the elementary and high school level. The purpose of this study is to select the specific research based tutoring program RPT and to use the historical research to create a study to explore its impact on struggling 6th grade mathematic students views of their math skills and show academic gains or losses. In the study described, students took a survey of their views of their individual math skills before and after the implementation as well as a pre and post-test for Quarter 1. Twelve students were selected to participate in the study that occurred 5 days per week for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks data was collected and analyzed to show the effects of RPT on academics and math viewpoint. At the completion of the study students were shown to have made growth in their math skills from quarter one. [from author's abstract]

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study documents the observed and reported experiences of a regular education teacher and her class of eighteen third grade students when using the strategies of reciprocal teaching and peer tutoring in reading and other content areas in a public school located on the edge of an urban area. All participants in the study received reading instruction from the author in the regular classroom setting. The study examines the students' use of the reciprocal teaching strategy and its effects on student engagement and interaction. The study explores the quality of student discussion and involvement with text to assist students with reading comprehension. The author defines the reciprocal teaching strategy (Palincsar & Brown, 1984) and documents the process of instructing the method, including adaptations made to the strategy to better accommodate students. Reciprocal teaching and peer tutoring are similar in their social nature and the author studies the interrelationship between the two, and the ways the strategies complement each other. The study suggests that students have increased opportunity to read, contribute answers, practice verbal and written skills, and that the social interaction provides modeling from peers. The study documents the students' ongoing use and varied levels of proficiency with reciprocal teaching and peer tutoring. Finally, the author questions how to implement reciprocal teaching and peer tutoring into other content areas.

The class consisted of 25 students with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, and their prior performance on California Standards Tests ranged from advanced to below basic. More than half of the class struggled to understand new material, many did not ask questions in class, and several were failing because they did not turn in any work or seek help. The study took place over the timeframe of 17 class periods, ranging from 36 to 50 minutes in length. The purpose was to explore whether having students work in strategic groups would help them understand steps to solve problems. I created groups consisting of three students; a high performing student, a low performing student and an English Language Learner (ELL). I took the ELL out of the class list and ranked the rest of the students based on their achievement level. I cut the class list in half, placing the highest-achieving student with the top of the lower-achieving students and the highest-performing ELL student. I continued with this process and was left with one group of four students for the last group. I taught a lesson and the next day, the class got into groups, and worked on an activity. They were able to ask their group members for help or they could reference their notes or textbook. The class took a group quiz after the activity, followed by a survey. A pre and post survey and test was taken as well as observational notes. Looking at the results, few made any improvements; the students did not change their procedural steps. Based on findings, groups were categorized into one of five types: 1) a group that checked their work and asked each other questions; 2) 3 groups that asked questions and helped one another if ask, but basically did their own work; 3) 2 groups did the work on their own and didn't help; 4) one person did all of the work and the others copied, and 5) no one in the group worked at all.
