Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of small learning communities with a ninth grade academy (SLCNGA) and student achievement of at-risk students over time on the science and mathematics Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test in large suburban school districts. Research included data for school years 2003-2004 through 2009-2010 retrieved from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). This study used a Hierarchical Linear Model along with a cross-validation analysis to investigate, analyze, and examine the TAKS data in science and mathematics. Data from this study revealed an insignificant difference in science TAKS scores for students who attended an SLCNGA compared to those who did not attend a SLCNGA. However, it did find a statically significant difference in the covariates (Sex, at-risk, and ethnicity) used in the study. Data from this study also revealed a significant difference in mathematics TAKS scores for students who attended an SLCNGA compared to those who did not attend a SLCNGA. Furthermore, it did find a statically significant difference in the covariates (Sex, at-risk, and ethnicity) used in the study. Further investigation is needed to gain a better understanding of the relationship of SLCNGAs on additional covariates. Also, a mixed methods approach incorporating the implementation methods of SLCNGAs needs to be explored.

Book excerpt: The Talent Development High School model is an education reform initiative that aims to improve the academic achievement of students in large, nonselective, comprehensive high schools. In operation at 33 high schools in 12 states across the country, the approach encompasses five main features: (1) small learning communities, organized around interdisciplinary teacher teams that share the same students and have common daily planning time; (2) curricula leading to advanced English and mathematics coursework; (3) academic extra-help sessions; (4) staff professional development strategies; and (5) parent- and community-involvement in activities that foster students? career and college development. This report describes the context in which Talent Development operates, details the model?s components, and documents its implementation in five high schools in a large, urban school district. It presents findings on Talent Development?s effects on student achievement during the first three years of program operation, focusing on impacts for ninth-graders. The analysis is based on an innovative quasi-experimental research methodology. The high schools in the study are characterized by low student engagement, poor prior preparation among entering ninth-graders, low ninth-grade promotion rates, and continued problems in the upper grades. Each Talent Development high school focused its initial implementation on the ninth grade by creating small learning communities, enacting curricular reforms, and providing professional development for teachers. The implementation process was supported by a team of Talent Development organizational facilitators and coaches. For first-time ninth-grade students, Talent Development produced substantial gains in academic course credits and promotion rates and modest improvements in attendance. The percentage of ninth-graders completing a core academic curriculum increased from 43 percent on average before the implementation of Talent Developere times the level of increase in similar schools in the district. Promotion rates in the Talent Development schools increased by just over 6 percentage points, while they fell by 4 percentage points in the comparison schools. Improvements in ninth-grade course credits earned, promotion, and attendance were strongest in the first three schools to begin using Talent Development, and these schools sustained improvements into the second and third years of implementation. Book excerpt: Many students in the United States are graduating from high school without the math skills they need to be considered college ready. For many of these graduates, who find themselves starting their higher education at a community college, remedial math can become an insurmountable barrier that ends their aspirations for a degree or certificate. Some students must take as many as four remedial courses before they are considered college ready. Studies report that between 60% and 70% of students placed into remedial math classes either do not successfully complete the sequence of required courses or avoid taking math altogether and therefore never graduate (Bailey, Jeong, & Cho, 2010). This study compared three low-level freshman math classes in one Arizona high school. The purpose of this study was to implement an innovative learning intervention to find out if there was a causal relationship between the addition of technology with instruction in a blended learning environment and performance in math. The intervention measured growth (pre- and posttest) and grade-level achievement (district-provided benchmark test) in three Foundations of Algebra classes. The three classes ranged on a continuum with the use of technology and personalized instruction. Additionally, focus groups were conducted to better understand the challenges this population of students face when learning math. The changes in classroom practices showed no statistical significance on the student outcomes achieved. Students in a blended online environment learned the Foundations of Algebra concepts similarly to their counterparts in a traditional, face-to-face learning environment.

Book excerpt: The fed. gov¿t. has invested billions of dollars to improve student academic performance, and many teachers and researchers are trying to determine the most effective instructional practices with which to accomplish this. This is a study of strategies used to prepare students to meet state academic achievement standards. This report answered: (1) What types of instructional practices are schools and teachers most frequently using to help students achieve state academic standards, and do those instructional practices differ by school characteristics? (2) What is known about how standards-based accountability systems have affected instructional practices? (3) What is known about instructional practices that are effective in improving student achievement?

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to explore the effect of Ninth Grade Academies as Small Learning Communities as an approach to further student success in comparison to Traditional Comprehensive High School structures in the state of Georgia. This study sought to determine if students who attended a Ninth Grade Academy as a Small Learning Community during their freshman year had a higher rate of attendance, increased student achievement as measured by the Georgia End of Course Test scores in Ninth Grade Literature and Ninth Grade Algebra I, and a higher Graduation Rate in comparison to students who did not attend a Ninth Grade Academy, but rather a Traditional Comprehensive High School configuration during the school year of 2007-2008. For all dependent variables that were used to measure achievement for the research questions: Graduation Rate, attendance, and End of Course Tests in Ninth Grade Literature and Ninth Grade Algebra I, there was a significant statistical difference between the two groups. For all research questions, the results indicated the Traditional Comprehensive High Schools measured higher percentages in Graduation Rate, End of Course Tests, and attendance than the Ninth Grade Academies.
