Book excerpt: Obesity levels---related to an increase of physical inactivity---are rapidly rising in the United States (CDC 2010; Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion 2008). Reportedly, African-American women have the highest obesity rates when compared to any other demographic in the United States---especially those residing in crime-plagued urban environments (CDC 2010). Yet active living strategies by designers have been least effective amongst this demographic (Day 2006). Researchers report crime-safety perceptions are one of the biggest environmental factors influencing physical activity levels amongst low-income African-American women (Foster and Giles-Corti 2008; Codinhoto 2009). Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) has been the most common practice towards an intervention of criminal activity in the built environment; however, little practice has addressed both CPTED and physical activity. While first and second generation crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) are inclusive of addressing both physical and social aspects of the built environment (Cleveland and Seville 2008; Griffin et al. 2008; Dekeseredy et al. 2009), they have yet to effectively address crime-safety needs and its potential relationship with physical activity behaviors of low-income African-American women and their neighborhoods. Therefore, what built environment changes tailored for this target population---African-American women---are necessary? This study examines 1) what crime safety perceptions of the built environment are affecting low-income African American women's physical activity levels in Kansas City, Missouri and 2) what design solutions these women suggest could help increase their physical activity levels, through improving their perceptions of neighborhood safety. As a place-specific study on a low income neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, selected through GIS suitability analyses with literature-based criteria, this study used survey and focus group interview methods to identify the target group's design suggestions. The findings resulted with a connection from research to design solutions---neighborhood and street-level design strategies with CPTED guidelines linking the researched participant's perceptions of crime in their built environment to the effect of crime on their own physical activity.

We use the exogenous variation in residential locations generated by MTO to estimate neighborhood effects on youth crime and delinquency. The offer to relocate to lower-poverty areas reduces arrests among female youth for violent and property crimes, relative to a control group. For males the offer to relocate reduces arrests for violent crime, at least in the short run, but increases problem behaviors and property crime arrests. Book excerpt: Physical activity is a modifiable health behavior that can impact health outcomes. Chapter 2 examined children's baseline weight and physical activity and follow-up health care utilization and school absences. Meeting physical activity recommendations was negatively associated with overweight/obese status, and more overweight/obese children than healthy weight children had at least one health condition. Baseline physical activity and weight did not predict health care use or school absences at 2-year follow-up. Chapter 3 determined where children ages 6-11 were physically active using time-stamped accelerometer data and parent-reported place logs. Children spent most time and did most physical activity at home and school. Although neighborhood time was limited, this time was more proportionally active than time in other locations (e.g., 42.1% of time in neighborhood vs. 18.1% of time at home). Children with any neighborhood-based physical activity had higher average total physical activity. Chapter 4 evaluated how five crime measures were interrelated and which crime measures were related to children's total and neighborhood physical activity. We found positive correlations between parents' general crime & disorder perceptions and: neighborhood incivilities and stranger danger perceptions; parent-reported prior crime victimization and: neighborhood incivilities, general crime & disorder and stranger danger perceptions. Higher census block group-level police-reported crime was associated with less child total and neighborhood physical activity. Using 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cross-sectional data, Chapter 5 examined associations between physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness and body adiposity. We also examined whether these relationships differed depending on how physical activity was measured: including 8-10 minute bouts or every minute. Positive associations between physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness were found for boys 12-19 years and adults 20-49 years. Negative associations were found between physical activity and body adiposity for girls 12-19 years and adults 20-49 years. We found no significant differences between how physical activity was measured and its relationship with the two health outcomes. We demonstrated that meeting physical activity recommendations is significantly related to children's, adolescents', and adults' positive health outcomes. Furthermore, a child's neighborhood is a valid location for physical activity policy and interventions, and crime may be a worthwhile target.

Book excerpt: Background: Ecological models posit that interactions among factors at multiple levels (e.g., individual, psychosocial, and environmental) influence physical activity (PA). However, interactions involving environmental factors are the least understood. Intervention studies also suggest PA behavior change may depend on the environments in which participants are encouraged to be active but such evidence from interventions targeting Latinos is limited. Methods: Chapter 2 tested interactions between neighborhood environmental and socio-demographic factors on total moderate-to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among an international adult sample (N=10,258). Chapter 3 examined interactions between neighborhood environmental and psychosocial factors on context-specific PA among an adolescent sample from the Baltimore/Seattle regions (N=910). Chapter 4 assessed the moderating effects of neighborhood environmental factors on the impacts of a physical activity intervention targeting Latinas in San Diego, CA at 12-months post-intervention (N=319). Results: Chapter 2 found moderating effects by education and gender on the association between safety from crime and meeting high PA levels, with inverse associations found only among the high-education group and men. Education and gender moderated associations of safety from crime and the presence of transit stops with meeting minimum PA guidelines, with positive associations found for safety from crime only among women and the presence of transit stops only among men and the high-education group. Chapter 3 found moderating effects by decisional balance on the association between recreation facility density and neighborhood leisure-time PA among female adolescents, with a negative association found only among those with high decisional balance. Decisional balance also moderated the associations of neighborhood walkability with non-school MVPA among females and non-neighborhood leisure-time PA among males, with positive associations only among adolescents with high decisional balance. Chapter 4 showed higher total MVPA and leisure-time MVPA at 12-months post-intervention among participants with favorable perceived neighborhood aesthetics than those with less favorable evaluations. Conclusions: This dissertation supports the ecological models' hypothesized interactions between environmental and individual/psychosocial factors on PA and the moderating role of the neighborhood environment on the impacts of a multilevel PA intervention targeting Latinas. Findings support global efforts targeting multiple levels of influence to promote population PA, health, and environmental sustainability.
