Book excerpt: Abstract: This study explores the effects of local economic development policies and environmental policies on county population and employment growth in the US. Local environmental policies are policies adopted by counties to control unplanned growth. Using a monocentric city model, growth control is shown to have a negative effect on population growth. The model suggests that optimal growth control policies depend on the policies of neighboring counties, on the strength of agglomeration economies, and on the degree of congestion resulting from population concentration. Aspatial and spatial analysis are conducted to explore the relationship between population and employment growth. Environmental policies and economic development policies are found to be endogenous, and instrumental variables are used to address this problem. An extended weight matrix is constructed to overcome the problem of spatial discontinuity of the sample data due to nonresponse. Estimates from the spatial models using the contiguity weight matrix and the inverse distance weight matrix are consistent with expectations. The main findings are: (1) local environmental policies have negative effects on population growth of both metro and nonmetro counties and positive effects on employment growth of metro counties but negative effects on employment growth of nonmetro counties; (2) local economic development policies stimulate employment growth but have no effects on population growth; (3) initial population level has a positive effect on population growth, while initial employment level has nonpositive effects on employment growth; (4) manufacturing industry concentration is negatively associated with employment growth while retailing industry concentration is positively associated with employment growth; (5) population density is negatively associated with population growth but has no effect on employment growth; (6) and people follow jobs and jobs follow people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and practical examination of complex issues, Local Economic Development and the Environment: Finding Common Ground provides a broad, academic look at the intersection of two important areas for local administrators. In addition to managing development in a strained economic climate, most administrators are also expected to be stewards of the environment. However, economic conditions often leave them with limited options for pursuing economic development and, at the same time, being environmentally mindful. Many find themselves without a clear understanding of the concepts, tools, and best practices available to accomplish this herculean task. Translating complex environmental and economic concepts into easily applicable practices, the book: Gives practitioners the information they need to communicate with consultants, constituents, and officials, and to avoid ideological obstacles Compares regulatory differences between states and other geographical differences Includes examples from across the country to highlight variations in environmental regulations and laws Provides technical, legal, and political insights into the process of pursuing local economic development projects that incorporate protection and awareness Contains case studies that demonstrate the concepts in action, allowing readers to fully grasp the complexities associated with sustainable economic development Discusses how local administrators can balance the economic and environmental needs of the future Bridging the gap between policy-making intention and outcome, this book connects readers with a larger body of research that not only underpins practical applications but also helps them avoid legal, technical, and political obstacles. It provides an arsenal of best practices and everyday, easy-to-use strategies for optimizing the difficult balance between economic development and environmental protection.

Book excerpt: This book addresses nine relevant questions: Will population growth reduce the growth rate of per capita income because it reduces the per capita availability of exhaustible resources? How about for renewable resources? Will population growth aggravate degradation of the natural environment? Does more rapid growth reduce worker output and consumption? Do rapid growth and greater density lead to productivity gains through scale economies and thereby raise per capita income? Will rapid population growth reduce per capita levels of education and health? Will it increase inequality of income distribution? Is it an important source of labor problems and city population absorption? And, finally, do the economic effects of population growth justify government programs to reduce fertility that go beyond the provision of family planning services?

Book Synopsis Sustainable Development and Geographical Space by : Heikki Jussila
Download or read book Sustainable Development and Geographical Space written by Heikki Jussila and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: While world-wide political, sociological and economic processes encourage the marginalization of peripheral areas, the general degradation of the ecosystem increasingly affects marginal populations as they are more likely to use natural resources. The fact that these communities suffer greatly from environmental, economic and social problems also tends to prevent them adopting a sustainable use of these local resources. Using a series of international case studies from both developed and developing countries, this remarkable volume explores issues of sustainable development in marginalized regions of the world. It discusses population development and sustainability, as well as environment and sustainability, from the point of view of regional development. It also examines globalization and the role of education in encouraging a sustainable path of development. A common focus shared by the contributors is that of the human aspects of development, as well as the concept of sustainability and its usefulness in geographical and economic research. The volume provides an insightful overview of the issues that touch sustainability in marginal and critical regions.
