Book excerpt: The physiological or psychological stresses that employees bring to their workplace affect not only their own performance but that of their co-workers and others. These stresses are often compounded by those of the job itself. Medical personnel, firefighters, police, and military personnel in combat settingsâ€"among othersâ€"experience highly unpredictable timing and types of stressors. This book reviews and comments on the performance-enhancing potential of specific food components. It reflects the views of military and non-military scientists from such fields as neuroscience, nutrition, physiology, various medical specialties, and performance psychology on the most up-to-date research available on physical and mental performance enhancement in stressful conditions. Although placed within the context of military tasks, the volume will have wide-reaching implications for individuals in any job setting.

This book was released on 1999-09-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a commonly held belief that athletes, particularly body builders, have greater requirements for dietary protein than sedentary individuals. However, the evidence in support of this contention is controversial. This book is the latest in a series of publications designed to inform both civilian and military scientists and personnel about issues related to nutrition and military service. Among the many other stressors they experience, soldiers face unique nutritional demands during combat. Of particular concern is the role that dietary protein might play in controlling muscle mass and strength, response to injury and infection, and cognitive performance. The first part of the book contains the committee's summary of the workshop, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The remainder of the book contains papers contributed by speakers at the workshop on such topics as, the effects of aging and hormones on regulation of muscle mass and function, alterations in protein metabolism due to the stress of injury or infection, the role of individual amino acids, the components of proteins, as neurotransmitters, hormones, and modulators of various physiological processes, and the efficacy and safety considerations associated with dietary supplements aimed at enhancing performance.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of extensive promotion of individual amino acids as therapeutic measures, and extensive data which indicated toxicity of single amino acids in experimental animals, 7 amino acids (arginine, ornithine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine) and carnitine, all associated with potential therapeutic acids, were given new-drug status. Submissions were invited to provide information on the non-toxic effects of these substances, but none were received. This Committee was formed to review the metabolic effects of the consumption of supplements of amino acids, singly or in combination; the safety concerns associated with the use of amino acids, singly or in combination; and the level up to which the various single amino acids listed may be consumed without causing pharmacological effects or toxicological concerns, particularly if consumed over a prolonged period. This report covers the replies to information letter no. 710; summaries of committee reports on amino acids; uses and combinations of dipeptides and combinations of amino acids; and a summary of the recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition is one of the key factors that modulate exercise performance. In this book, a group of expert scientists discuss the ergogenic properties of various nutritional interventions and present research to show that dietary strategies can be applied to extend the limits of human endurance, lower the risk of illness or injury, and speed recovery rates. More specifically, they discuss recent findings on topics such as caffeine and its effect on the brain, carnitine and fat oxidation, ergogenic properties of beta-alanine, dietary protein and muscle reconditioning, nutrition and immune status, and the importance of proper hydration. This publication will provide the reader with many novel insights into the complex interaction between nutrition and exercise, allowing them to define more effective dietary strategies to improve health and performance. Moreover, while focusing on elite athletes, it is interesting to note that some of the discoveries can be applied beyond this niche, for example to improve performance outcomes in the elderly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing the basic nutrition requirements and combining them with proper training are the two most important factors for athletes to achieve peak performance levels. Nutritional Guidelines for Athletic Performance: The Training Table addresses these needs on a comprehensive basis from a training table perspective. Offering practical guidelines for practitioners and athletes, the book focuses on the key macronutrients that fuel daily metabolism and exercise training and explores differing needs for various athletes and their individual goals. Topics discussed include: General principles and physiology of caloric intake for all major macronutrients and how this pertains to both active and sedentary individuals Energy demands and nutritional requirements for strength-power athletes and elite competitors in endurance sports Protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamin, and mineral needs of athletes The importance of optimal fluid and hydration during exercise How to determine body weight for a desired body fat percentage, recommended calorie consumption, dietary suggestions, and useful meal planning tools for a wide variety of caloric needs The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure and how athletes can eat to build muscle, lose fat, and optimize performance Scientific strategies on how to time exercise and food intake to more effectively replenish glycogen, increase protein synthesis, and blunt protein degradation How the physiological changes that accompany aging change nutrient needs and guidelines for older athletes on maximizing performance and maintaining health Structuring a diet containing appropriate amounts of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) can be a daunting task. This text adequately addresses how athletes can do so in an effective and practical fashion, optimizing performance and maintaining health.

Book excerpt: Background: Current recommendations for athletes consider dietary protein requirements that maintain nitrogen (i.e. protein) balance rather than an optimal dosage to enhance metabolism and exercise performance. Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to determine how differing protein intakes alter protein metabolism and exercise performance. Methods: Using a double blind randomized crossover design, 10 male runners completed 3 trials involving 4 days of controlled training and ingestion of either 0.94 (LOW), 1.20 (MOD) or 1.83 g protein/kg body weight/d (HIGH). Whole body protein metabolism and exercise performance were assessed. Results: Whole body net protein balance displayed a relative dose-response (HIGH > MOD > LOW, P.
