There are a few criticisms on the research design, the causal relationship between variables, measurement methods and data collection. Furthermore, previous studies rarely explore this value creation process between the two. This study introduces the intermediary mechanism of intellectual capital, to further understand how people management drive organizational performance. The research subjects in this study are Taiwan public listed companies. Questionnaires were directly mailed to the surveyed companies, and surveyed companies were asked to mail the completed questionnaires to the researcher after three weeks. In each surveyed company, participants are divided into two groups: one group includes HR professionals, while the other group includes line managers. HPWS and intellectual capital items were respectively responded by HR professionals and line managers to avoid the bias of common method variance (Peng et al., 2006). The results show that in the six dimensions of human resource management, only the 'incentive pay' on the organizational performance has a direct and significant positive impact, while the 'training development', 'employee participation', and 'performance management' of these three human resource management measures would help to enhance the intellectual capital, which in turn enhance organizational performance. The study also found that the most important organizational performance improvement from the 'human capital' and 'structural capital.' Therefore, in addition to training employees of the company's knowledge, skills, and professional, firms have to be the expert in the process of cumulative knowledge, experience, processes and other records and the complete integration of the knowledge database system for continuous improvement and repeated use, so as its unique competitive advantage can be retain in the organization.

Based on 571 listed firms in Australia for the period of 2005-2014 (5518 firm-years) this study reveals that IC efficiency is positively significant with ROA and ROE - which endorses resource based theory. Further analysis shows that human capital, structural capital and physical capital are also significant and confidently endorse resource-dependency and Organisation-Learning theories. The findings of this study are vital for stakeholders such as a firm's management, shareholders, and potential investors to understand the role of IC for FP. Moreover, the findings are particularly important for policy-setters to highlight the importance of IC and develop a systematic framework for IC disclosure. This study also opens new avenues for future research to consider the dynamic nature of the IC-FP relationship and account for endogeneity.

It has not been established that those employee involvement strategies amount to anything more than another series of management fads or ruses designed to get more out of workers without giving them anything in return. This revelatory book, written by some of the skeptics, lays some of the suspicion to rest. Based on their visits to 44 plants and surveys of more than 4,000 employees, Eileen Appelbaum, Thomas Bailey, Peter Berg, and Arne L. Kalleberg concluded that companies are indeed more successful when managers share knowledge and power with workers and when workers assume increased responsibility and discretion. The study of steel, apparel, and medical electronics and imaging plants revealed much. In self-directed teams, workers were able to eliminate bottlenecks and coordinate the work process. In task forces created to improve quality, they communicated with individuals outside their own work groups and were able to solve problems. Expensive equipment in steel mills operated with fewer interruptions, turnaround and labor costs were cut in apparel factories, and costly inventories of components and medical equipment were reduced. And what did the employees think? The worker survey showed that jobs in participatory work systems often provide more challenging tasks and more opportunities for creativity. Employees in apparel had higher hourly earnings; those in steel had both higher hourly earnings and higher job satisfaction. Workers in more participatory settings were no more likely than others to report heavy workloads or excessive demands on their time. They were, however, less likely to report involuntary overtime or conflict with co-workers, and were more likely to be satisfied with their surroundings. Manufacturing Advantage provides the best assessment available of the effectiveness of high-performance work systems. Freestanding chapters near the end of the book provide full documentation of research data without interrupting the narrative flow.

Book excerpt: A growing number of studies on high-performance work systems (HPWS) have found empirical support suggesting that leaders and employees have different views of HPWS, which may result in different effects on collective performance. Nonetheless, most studies on HPWS have solely focused on the perception of a single party (either leader or employee). This dissertation fills this void in research by examining the effect of (in)congruence of HPWS use perceived by team leaders and by their teams. Overall findings from the study indicate that the level of team human and social capital varies based on the leaders' and teams' perceptions of HPWS use. Specifically, human capital increases when both leaders' and teams' collective perceptions of HPWS use are congruent at a high level compared to being congruent at a low level. Additionally, when teams' perception of HPWS use is higher than leaders' perception of HPWS use, social capital is generated more, leading to higher levels of service performance and customer-directed citizenship behavior. Additionally, this study suggests a need to examine within-team dispersion in future studies on team HR attributions. In all, the results of this dissertation emphasize the importance of examining the perspectives of both leaders and employees regarding HPWS use and of considering both the mean value and within-team dispersion of team collective HR attributions in different organizational contexts and industries. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

The research questions posed in this thesis take on the challenge to find empirical evidence that investment in Human Capital, through Human Resources, has a positive impact on intermediate as well as accounting and share-value indicators of organisational performance. This literature review summarises, integrates and evaluates research published between 1998 and 2003 pertaining to the direct and indirect relationship between Human Resources on different indicators of intermediate and bottom-line performance. The review is comprised of 31 articles clustered into the following topics: strategic HRM, Human Resources Development, technology, diverse workforces and flexible working conditions and methodological issues in HR-organisational performance research. Evidence for the direct and indirect impact of HR on organisational performance is discussed and the findings are interpreted with reference to Ostroff and Bowen s Multi-Level Model (2000), which explains the individual, organisational and inter-level relationships between Human Resources and organisational performance. Enabling conditions that strengthen the HR-organisational performance relationship are identified. Methodological issues such as levels of analyses, short-term vs. long-term perspectives and generalisability are evaluated in detail. Employee benefits from enhanced organisational performance and barriers to the diffusion of high-performance work practices are research questions that still remain unanswered (Ichniowski et al., 2000). Future research should focus on building up a portfolio of studies at different levels of analyses and include a broader range of organisational performance variables that are also relevant employees as well as shareholders and top management. The implications of the research findings for HR directors and corporate strategy functions are presented.
