Book excerpt: The effects of honest and fake-good response sets on the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey 1991) by a general psychiatric population were examined. Forty-three participants from an inpatient unit at a state hospital were recruited after institutional approval as well as individual consent from the participants. A within group design was utilized in which participants were asked to take the PAI twice: (a) once with instructions to deny psychological distress and (b) once with standard instructions. It was predicted that participants instructed to deny psychological distress would score a significantly higher PIM when compared to their honest portrayal of themselves. Mean t scores for each group were assessed and compared using a parametric repeated measures ANOVA statistical test. Results found participants were able to fake-good on the PAI. However, fake-good responses were more difficult to detect when compared to normal populations under similar conditions. Implications for these findings are discussed
