Book excerpt: Objectives: This study evaluated a school based health and physical education program conducted in nine elementary and four middle schools in seven Metro-Atlanta school districts in Georgia. HealthMPowers served 5,644 students last year and approximately 15,000 students over the 3 year intervention. Methods. Quantitative programmatic data were collected by HealthMPowers before the intervention started (pre, 2004) and again three years later (post, 2007). HealthMPowers worked with these schools for the entire three year period and collected post Program Design and post-intervention fitness data in spring 2007. Results: The nine participating elementary schools each demonstrated an increase in student fitness levels for the fourth and fifth grades. The four middle schools demonstrated an increase in student fitness levels in at least one grade, which varied by school. Conclusion: Our findings suggested school programs can be effective in increasing physical activity and fitness scores and supports broader implementation of known successful programs.

Reports indicate that many children and adolescents already have risk factors for chronic diseases and the prevalence of obesity among children is at an all time high. There are concerns that children may not be active enough for current or future health benefits. It is imperative that elementary physical education teachers provide effective instruction during health-related fitness instruction since physical activity patterns are believed to be established during childhood. A central dimension of teachers' instruction involves active monitoring of students' performance and conduct. This study sought to determine a functional relationship between distant interactions (a component of active monitoring) by physical education teachers and elementary students' moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels during fitness instruction. Distant interactions were defined as teachers' verbal prompts, encouragement, and feedback provided to students located on opposite ends of the gym from where the teacher is located. Five classes (grades 3-5) and two elementary physical education teachers were observed for this study. A reversal design using two treatments, close interaction (C-IA) and distant interaction (D-IA) over multiple phases was implemented. A modified System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time (SOFIT) and "live" momentary time sampling was used to measure students' MVPA during fitness instruction. Teachers' interactions were coded using SOFIT's teacher behavior categories. Fidelity of treatment was assessed. Students' mean MVPA levels and teacher interaction behavior data were graphed and analyzed visually. Interobserver agreement checks were completed for all groups across all conditions. The results indicated the use of distant interaction increased the MVPA levels for the students farthest from the teacher while the close students maintained their levels. Findings build further the empirical base of teachers' active monitoring behavior and point to the importance of teachers distributing their attention to all areas of the gymnasium during fitness instruction. That is, teachers need to be aware of the benefits of using distant interactions as part of their active supervision efforts to increase/sustain students' MVPA during fitness instruction as part of the process aimed at shaping physical activity behavior in youth.

Book excerpt: "This study examined the relationship between fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance) and academic achievement (North Carolina End-of-Grade Math and Reading Assessments) in 4th and 5th grade boys and girls from high and low-poverty schools (N=2194). The primary aim of this study was to clarify specific relationships among cardiorespiratory endurance, academic achievement, gender, and poverty in order to help guide school policy. The secondary aim was to use detailed findings from this study to make specific recommendations to stakeholders in the school district to change school programs and policies toward increasing physical activity for specific student populations. Descriptive, correlational, and regression analysis were performed to analyze the relationship among fitness, academic achievement, gender, and poverty. Results demonstrated that students from low-poverty schools generally outperformed students from high-poverty schools in all measurements of fitness and academic achievement. Main effects of gender and poverty were seen on academic achievement and cardiorespiratory endurance, though the effect of poverty was much stronger than that of gender. Positive correlations were demonstrated between fitness and academic scores among the full participant group. Fitness was a significant predictor of math and reading across both poverty levels, though generally stronger in low-poverty schools. The strongest relationship between fitness scores and academic achievement was found with math scores for girls from high-poverty schools. Book excerpt: The present study was carried out with the intention to evaluate two different after school joint-use running programs located in the Southern part of the United States. The Champion Running Program (CRP), a nonprofit organization that was present in middle and high schools in 2015-2016, and Speed Zone Running Program (SZRP), a nonprofit organization that took over the CRP and changed the name and the curriculum, were implemented into six middle schools in the consecutive academic school year. A multiphase mixed methods research design was conducted to evaluate CRP and SZRP. Phase 1 is a descriptive study, designed to inform the next phase of study by examining the structures, purpose, mission, and goals of the two running programs. Through inductive coding of websites, curricula, student log notebooks, and a coach’s interview transcript, all data were interpreted by the data sources collectively. Phase 2, guided by the findings of Phase 1, used valid, reliable surveys to measure the program effects of psychosocial factors of enjoyment (i.e. Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale; PACES; Kendzierski & DeCarlo, 1991), school connectedness (i.e. School Connectedness Survey; McNeely, Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002), grit as a measure of pererverance (i.e. Short Grit Scale; Duckworth & Quinn, 2009), and self-efficacy (i.e. Self-efficacy Survey; Motl et al., 2002) towards physical activity. In total, 119 middle school students (101 CRP and 18 SZRP) and one running club coach,volunteered to participate in this study. Phase 1 revealed the structures of CRP and SZRP varied considerably. Three overarching themes emerged from all the data sources: Accessibility, supporting goals for participants and coaches, and format of the program. Phase 2, a quantitative analysis using ANOVAs, found that members of SZRP reported significantly higher scores on physical activity enjoyment t(84)= -2.45, p= .016 and school connectedness t(99)=-8.42, p=.00. Both nonprofit after school running programs supported the mission of getting students to be physically active, but each enacted varying approaches to achieve this goal. Members of SZRP had higher levels of physical activity enjoyment and school connectedness compared to participants of CRP. Future research should compare other types of after school programs and use larger sample sizes

Book excerpt: School environments provide an ideal setting for children to develop and adopt active living behaviors as a way of life. The primary purpose of this investigation was to describe state, district and school level policy regarding in-school physical activity, the school built environment and in-school physical activity of children ages 6 through 11 years in the Mississippi Delta. A mixed-methods approach was used to garner a rich understanding of how current policy and the built environment influence in-school physical activity and weight status. Eleven public schools in three districts representing two counties in the Mississippi Delta participated in this investigation. The mean physical education class time was 39.2 minutes ±8.13 (range 38.33; 95% CI = 37.66-40.75). The mean percent of physical education class time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was 36.43% ± 1.5% (95% CI = 33.57-39.28), a mean of 13.99 minutes ± 5.78 (range 27.0; 95% CI = 12.89-15.08). A significant relationship was found between children's in-school physical activity and their BMI (r = 0.629; p = 0.05). There were significant inverse relationships between the presence and quality of amenities to the school built environment and the students BMI (r = -0.619; p = 0.04), waist-to-height ratio (r = -0.819; p = 0.002) and total body weight (r = -0.615; p = 0.044). There was also a significant inverse relationship between the presence and quality of built environment features and waist-to-height ratio (r = -0.713; p = 0.014). There was no significant relationship between children's in-school physical activity and aspects of the school built environment. If students are given the opportunity for unstructured daily physical activity it is likely they will meet current physical activity guidelines. Two of the schools in this investigation provided little opportunity for physical activity through recess and physical education classes and had the highest BMI scores. Not surprising, when students in these schools were given the opportunity to be physically activity they were among the most physically active students in this study. Despite Mississippi State law, school districts and schools are failing to adhere to policies that provide students the opportunity to engage in 150-minutes of weekly physical activity and are in violation of current state law.
