Book excerpt: Sediment transport in coastal and fluvial environments resulting from short time-scale processes of disturbance such as urbanization, mining, agriculture and military operations have significant impact on channel network and shoreline morphology, downstream water quality and ecosystems, and the integrity of land use applications. The scale and spatial distribution of these effects are largely attributable to the size distribution of the sediment grains that become eligible for transport due to disturbance. An improved understanding of advective and diffusive grain size dependent sediment transport phenomena will lead to the development of more accurate predictive models and preventative measures. To this end, three studies were performed that investigate grain-size dependent sediment transport on three different scales. Discrete particle computer simulations of sheet flow bedload transport on the scale of 0.1-100 millimeters were performed on a heterogeneous population of grains of various grain sizes. The relative transport rates and diffusivities of grains under both oscillatory and uniform, steady flow conditions were quantified. These findings suggest that, due to preferential vertical sorting of the largest grains to the top of the bed, a representative grain size that is functionally dependent on the applied flow parameters should be employed when parameterizing bed roughness. On the scale of 1-10m, experiments were performed to quantify the hydrodynamics and sediment capture efficiency of various baffles installed in a sediment retention pond, a commonly used sedimentation control measure in watershed applications. Analysis indicates that optimum sediment capture effectiveness may be achieved based on baffle permeability, pond geometry, and/or flow rate. Finally, on the scale of 10-1,000m, simulations were performed using a path sampling bivariate watershed erosion / deposition model in which grain size dependent terrain modification and pattern formation wer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years there has been a major growth in efforts to quantify the geometry and dimensions of sediment bodies from analogues to provide quantitative input to geological models. The aim of this volume is to examine the current state of the art, from both an industry and an academic perspective. Contributions discuss the challenges of extracting relevant data from different types of sedimentary analogue (outcrop, process models, seismic) and the application and significance of such information for improving predictions from subsurface static and dynamic models. Special attention is given to modelling reservoir properties and gridding issues for predicting subsurface fluid flow. As such, the volume is expected to be of interest to both the geoscience community concerned with the fundamentals of sedimentary architecture as well as geological modellers and engineers interested in how these characteristics are modelled and influence subsurface predictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive guide for accurate state-of-the-art modelling of free surface flows Understanding the dynamics of free surface flows is the starting point of many environmental studies, impact studies, and waterworks design. Typical applications, once the flows are known, are water quality, dam impact and safety, pollutant control, and sediment transport. These studies used to be done in the past with scale models, but these are now being replaced by numerical simulation performed by software suites called “hydro-informatic systems”. The Telemac system is the leading software package worldwide, and has been developed by Electricité de France and Jean-Michel Hervouet, who is the head and main developer of the Telemac project. Written by a leading authority on Computational Fluid Dynamics, the book aims to provide environmentalists, hydrologists, and engineers using hydro-informatic systems such as Telemac and the finite element method, with the knowledge of the basic principles, capabilities, different hypotheses, and limitations. In particular this book: presents the theory for understanding hydrodynamics through an extensive array of case studies such as tides, tsunamis, storm surges, floods, bores, dam break flood waves, density driven currents, hydraulic jumps, making this a principal reference on the topic gives a detailed examination and analysis of the notorious Malpasset dam failure includes a coherent description of finite elements in shallow water delivers a significant treatment of the state-of-the-art flow modelling techniques using Telemac, developed by Electricité de France provides the fundamental physics and theory of free surface flows to be utilised by courses on environmental flows Hydrodynamics of Free Surface Flows is essential reading for those involved in computational fluid dynamics and environmental impact assessments, as well as hydrologists, and bridge, coastal and dam engineers. Guiding readers from fundamental theory to the more advanced topics in the application of the finite element method and the Telemac System, this book is a key reference for a broad audience of students, lecturers, researchers and consultants, right through to the community of users of hydro-informatics systems.

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain papers by some of the world's leading experts in the analytical and numerical modelling of sediment transport, its measurement on site and in the laboratory, river and coastal morphology, and similar issues. These topics are of fundamental importance in many areas (such as the silting or erosion of coasts and rivers, and the design of fluvial or coastal structures) and should consequently be of interest to a wide audience in engineering, geology and related disciplines.

Book excerpt: Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems, and they may also affect groundwater quality and agricultural products when disposed on land. Four aspects are covered reflecting the development of knowledge in particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: - the identification, surveillance, monitoring and control of sources and distribution of pollutants, - the evaluation of solid/solution relations of contaminants in surface waters, - the study of in-situ processes and mechanisms of pollutant transfer in various compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, - the assessment of the environmental impact of particle-bound contaminants, i.e. the development of sediment quality criteria. A final chapter focusses on practical aspects concerning contaminated sediments.
