Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field

Book excerpt: Mapping of low cycle fatigue mechanisms at elevated temperatures is attempted for a better understanding of the elevated temperature, low cycle fatigue behavior of an austenitic stainless steel. Results of strain-controlled, uniaxial low cycle fatigue tests on a solution-treated Type 310 stainless steel were used in the analysis. The experiments were performed at 15 temperatures that ranged from room temperature to 800°C and under four strain rate conditions that ranged from 6.7 x 10-3 s-1 to 6.7 x 10-6 s-1. Modes of variation, both in stress amplitude and in fatigue life, are classified and plotted against temperature-strain rate coordinates. By superposing the two maps, one can easily find the principal factors that govern the fatigue life for any given conditions of temperature and strain rate. The proposed idea of mapping is believed to have wide applicability (e.g., for selecting materials and predicting fatigue behavior under service conditions).

Book excerpt: The influence of relatively high-frequency, low-amplitude vibrations on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior and its fractographic feature for a GH36 Fe-Ni alloy at 600°C is studied. It is found that the influence is rather complicated and significant. The nature and extent of the influence depended upon the ratio of the amplitude of high-cycle to low-cycle stress range, Q. As Q approaches Qc (the critical value of Q), there is no appreciable influence on the total LCF life; as Q Qc, it will prolong the lifetime slightly; and as Q Qc, the fatigue life will decrease progressively. The variation of fatigue life was ascribed to the occurrence of some considerable interactions between creep, high-cycle fatigue (HCF), LCF, and environmental effect under different values of Q at elevated temperature, and the change of damage mechanism of the material. The total LCF life, especially crack propagation life, will be markedly reduced by the high-cycle vibrations when Q is much greater than Qc. Meanwhile, the mixed failure of creep, HCF, LCF, and environmental attack will gradually change into combined cycle fatigue failure with increasing Q. The fractographic analysis is in agreement with these results.

Book excerpt: In 1979 the first InternationalSymposium on Low CycleFatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held in Stuttgart, FRG. Since then research in low cycle fatigue has proceeded rapidly. The vital interest of engineers and researchers in communicating the rapid advances in the ongoing research in low cycle fatigue has encouraged me to initiate again the Second International Conference which was held in Munich, FRG, 7-11 September 1987. Failure in low cycle fatigue represents a serious problem in the design and opera tion of highly stressed structures. Under complex loading and environmental cir cumstances, especially for high temperature services, reliable life prediction can not be expected without detailed consideration of the failure mechanism and with out extensive use of mechanistic approaches. The purpose of this conference was to provide a forum to discuss the advances in recent research in the field of low cycle fatigue. The conference was intended to help to further bridge the gap between those who are involved in basic research, and the engineers who have to perform the design of highly stressed structural components.
