Book excerpt: As academic expectations of students become more rigorous, school readiness has become crucial in the achievement of young students entering formal education. The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 changed the date for admission to kindergarten in California, and a new grade level was created. Transitional kindergarten (TK) would be Year 1 of a 2-year Kindergarten experience for children whose birthdays fell on or between September 2 and December 2. Transitional kindergarten would focus on competency in social and emotional skills and emphasize the importance of a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Also, pre-literacy skills and mathematics would be introduced in TK. As TK approaches its sixth year of implementation, a limited amount of research is available on the effectiveness of an additional year of schooling for young students who meet birth date qualifications for TK. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of TK on the reading fluency of first graders. Reading fluency scores from 2nd trimester assessments were collected to determine if there is a difference in reading rate between first graders who attended TK and first graders who did not attend TK. An independent t-test was used to determine if a significant difference exists in reading fluency between first graders that attended TK and those that did not participate in TK. Through statistical analysis, the author found that there was a significant difference in reading fluency between first grade students who attended TK and first grade students who did not attend TK. Students who attended TK outperformed students who did not attend TK.

Book excerpt: Parents and teachers are faced with the difficult question of when to enroll their children in kindergarten to be the most academically successful in a rural area. Some parents have started enrolling children in kindergarten at the age of four, despite not being cognitively ready based on the information-processing theory. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between entrance age and the academic achievement of literacy skills for kindergarten students in a rural area. A correlational design was utilized to test the strength and direction of the relationship between two quantitative variables: age and reading achievement in a rural school district. A correlational design was appropriate for this study since in order to measure the degree and direction of the relationship between two or more variables and to explore the magnitude among variables. A scatter plot was used to determine the differences between the predictor variable, age, and criterion variable achievement in reading in a rural school district. The researcher failed to reject the null hypothesis. A total of 221 students participated in the research from three separate public schools in rural Virginia. The results of the study did not indicate a relationship between entrance age measured in months and academic achievement in literacy skills scores. Future research to include how age impacts kindergarten students in other demographic regions, with a larger sample size, would aid in further development of this research.

Book excerpt: This study investigates whether gender and kindergarten entrance age affect students' achievement on the Ohio Third Grade Reading Achievement Assessment. More specifically, this study investigates whether kindergarten children with late birthdays (after July 1) and who reside in northwest Ohio score lower on the literacy component of the Ohio Third Grade Reading Achievement Assessment than their older peers with birthdays prior to July 1. The sample for this study is composed of 2,296 third-grade students who attended schools within 10 different school districts in rural northwest Ohio over a three-year period (2007, 2008, and 2009). The sample data consisted of total reading scores, birth dates and gender of the students in the sample. Analysis of the data was conducted using two statistical models: simple linear regression analysis, a series of two-sample t-tests, and a General Linear Model. Overall, the results of the regression analyses indicated a slight negative correlation (not statistically significant) between the age at kindergarten entrance and reading achievement scores, suggesting that the reading iv achievement scores for both boys and girls decreases as their age at kindergarten increases. Based on the t-test results, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in the scores between boys with birthdays after July 1 and girls with birthdays after July 1 on the Ohio Third Grade Reading Achievement Assessment. The General Linear Model analysis indicated there were significant differences between the participating districts.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate if there was any significant difference in the reading portion of the Criteria Reference Criterion Test (CRCT) of first grade students who attend pre-kindergarten and those who didn’t in rural southwest Georgia. The study investigated the effect of pre-kindergarten achievement intervention of first grade students. Two educators gave first grade students reading instruction on the five components in a 135 minute reading block on a daily basis. The Georgia Pre-kindergarten Program was established in 1993 to provide the state’s 4-year-olds with high-quality preschool experiences. The Head Start program was developed in 1965 as a comprehensive early childhood development program designed to provide education, health, and social services to low-income children, ages 3 and 5, and their families. School Readiness is an educational issue of growing concern.
