Book excerpt: Reaching enrollment goals has always been challenging but even more so in this current environment of increased competition and reductions in higher education funding. Enrollment managers need tools that help predict enrollment but also help understand how and if financial aid can be used to influence a student's decision to attend and to persist at the same institution. This study assesses the predictive ability of different types of financial aid on choice and retention at a public 4-year university. Logistic regression was the statistical method used in the analysis, and the findings suggest that some types of financial aid increase the odds of both attending and retaining. The study also revealed that group differences exist for both income and race. Institutional scholarships and government grants significantly and positively influenced both choice and retention for almost all racial and income groups, but some groups of students did not respond positively to institutional grants. Additionally, Black students were negatively influenced by increases in student loans, but Hispanic students were positively influenced by increases in student loans. The findings in part match other similar studies and in part differ. In this respect, this study provides proof of the importance of institutions conducting their own similar research in order to increase enrollment through financial aid leveraging.

The correlational pattern that emerged from twenty-four logit models suggests higher-income students accrue a retention benefit from financial aid, unlike low-income students, net of first-year academic experience and type and amount of aid received. Conversely, retention of low-income freshmen is more likely due to academic performance compared to those from high-income background. Book excerpt: Path analysis was conducted to examine the influence of financial aid, in the context of student background characteristics and college experiences, on freshman-to-sophomore year retention. Specifically, a theoretical model of freshman-to-sophomore year retention was developed and tested that included the following variables: external encouragement, ACT Composite score, financial need, the amount of work study received, the amount of loan money received, the amount of need-based gift aid received, the amount of merit-based gift aid received, students' satisfaction with their financial aid, academic integration, social integration, university GPA, perceived gains, institutional commitment, students' satisfaction with their collegiate experiences, and intent to persist. Overall, the variables in the hypothesized, theoretical model accounted for 30% of the variance in freshman-to-sophomore year retention. Further support for the hypothesized relationships in the theoretical model was shown by the nonsignificant chi-square goodness-of-fit statistic (X 2 = 39.79, df = 32, p =.16). Direct, indirect, and total effects were examined for each structural equation in the model. Results revealed that the effects of financial aid on freshman-to-sophomore year retention were intricately interwoven into the multifaceted aspects of the university. Merit-based gift aid was the only financial aid variable to have a statistically significant, positive, total effect on retention. Merit-based gift aid also had statistically significant, positive effects on satisfaction with financial aid, academic integration, university GPA, and intent to persist. However, students who received more merit-based gift aid were less likely to be socially integrated and were less satisfied with their collegiate experiences, two strong predictors of college student attrition. Larger amounts of need-based gift aid were associated with greater satisfaction with financial aid which, in turn, was associated with greater academic integration, perceived gains, and satisfaction with collegiate experiences. In contrast, larger amounts of loan money were associated with lower academic achievement. Thus, the results of this study underscore the interactive process of freshman-to-sophomore year retention in which financial aid variables are but one aspect of a complex social and academic system.

Two of the most prominent struggles faced by these students are the deficiency of financial aid available for those in the working-class and the lack of these students' social capital. Social capital, which is often passed down through families, may be particularly lacking for working-class students because students from these families may be first-generation and a student's family may not possess the knowledge about the higher education process to help these students apply for financial aid. Additionally, college students who lack social capital may not have family emotional support and may face jealousy or criticism from family members who have not had the same postsecondary educational opportunities. In order to explore the role that a lack of social capital plays in working-class students' ability to obtain financial aid and be retained in college, this study was designed to assess whether working-class students attending a large urban public community college in Pennsylvania who possessed strong family social capital were more likely to be retained into their second semester of studies than those with poor social capital, and whether family social capital impacted participants' financial aid awards. Using the Mann-Whitney U and Fisher's Exact Tests, participants' survey results were analyzed to determine whether working-class students experienced difficulties in their retention due to a lack of financial aid or a lack of family and community support. The researcher found a significant difference in the number of participants retained who possessed strong family emotional support versus those students who possessed poor family emotional support. The findings indicated no statistically significant difference in all other areas.

Book excerpt: The affordability of higher education is an increasing challenge for individuals and families in America. A student's chance of going to college and actually receiving their degree continues to be closely associated with their economic situation, as well as that of their family. The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between student financial aid and undergraduate degree completion to evaluate the impact of different sources of student financial aid on persistence and degree completion. Data used in this research is from the Linked Longitudinal Administrative Data Set (LLADS), which includes data from three different sources: the Enhanced Missouri Student Achievement Study (EMSAS), the ACT Student Assessment data file, and student financial aid data provided by the Missouri Student Assistance Resource Services (MOSTARS). The sample is made up of first-time, first-semester freshmen students from six Missouri institutions of higher education. A longitudinal study was conducted using the sample of three freshman cohorts. The cohorts were followed for five academic years. Persistence for the respective year of analysis was used as a dependent variable and separate logistic analysis were run for each year. To analyze student degree completion, two dependent variables were created and two different logistic regression analyses were run. Independent variables for the study have been grouped into five constructs: (1) Demographic Characteristics; (2) Major/Academic Performance; (3) Family Income; (4) Institution Type; and last (5) Financial Aid. Results suggest that federal government intervention in the financing of higher education through policy is important. Without the federal government's intervention, it is possible that only high-income groups will be able to afford a college education. The affordability gap is evident from the findings of this study with the lower family income categories analyzed demonstrating an increasingly negative relationship with persistence when compared with the highest family income category of greater than $100,000, as income categories decrease. From the results of this study, frontloading grants may be a good idea. The low-income students who are receiving need-based aid in the beginning years of enrollment are not as likely to persist as those receiving the aid in the later years of college. Perhaps increasing the funding in early years, or frontloading would increase the likelihood of these students persisting to their third and fourth years of college, because most students who drop out of college tend to do so within the first two years, often due to fear of high debt accumulation. In this study subsidized loans were found to have a significant positive effect on year-to-year persistence and unsubsidized loans were found to have a positive effect on persisting to the fifth year of school. For many qualified high school graduates, the thought of relying on loans may discourage enrollment in a postsecondary institution, especially among the students from low-income families. If students view the debt involved with funding a college education as a better investment choice their decisions to enroll and persist are likely to increase.
