The combined effects of ambient and live well temperature on stress responses from exercise have not been thoroughly examined. Large numbers of fish required for stress experiments can be produced by intensive culture, but hatchery fish may differ physiologically from wild fish due to dietary carbohydrates. Therefore, the effects of diet, population, and temperature on stress response and health were examined. Stress responses were similar among fish fed formulated and live diets and liver health improved within 4-6 weeks. Although cortisol responses of hatchery and wild fish differed, secondary stress responses were similar. Fish subjected to simulated angling at temperatures of 17, 25, 33 °C with live well temperature differentials of -4, 0, +4 °C, had the lowest resilience to stress at the warmest temperatures, exhausting energy supplies, coincident with metabolic acidosis and poor ion regulation.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis was to determine the metabolic and behavioural outcomes from hypoxia exposure to largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) yearlings when acclimated to either winter (5°C) or summer (20°C) temperatures. This was achieved by exposing largemouth bass to varying levels of hypoxia and subsequently quantifying metabolites, in addition to observing behavioural patterns. The critical partial pressure of oxygen was also determined for fish at both temperatures. Hypoxia experiments revealed that metabolite concentrations increased or decreased significantly compared to control values as hypoxia levels intensified at 20°C, however there were minimal changes for fish at 5°C. More specifically, end product concentrations of lactate increased, while substrate concentrations of ATP, PCr and glycogen decreased and glucose concentrations did not change significantly at 20°C. It was also found that the magnitude of change was greater for fish at 20°C, indicating the impact of hypoxia is greater at warmer temperatures. In addition, it was noted that hypoxia experiments performed at either identical percent oxygen saturation (%) or identical dissolved oxygen (mg/L) resulted in very similar metabolite trends at both temperatures. In terms of behaviour, ventilation rates increased significantly and peaked at 2mg/L for largemouth bass at 20°C, however there was no change for fish at 5°C. There were also more instances of aquatic surface respiration with increasing hypoxia for fish at 20°C, but nearly no attempts at 5°C. Critical partial pressure of oxygen (Pcrit) values were calculated to be 1.36 " 0.02 mg/L (16% oxygen saturation) for 20°C and 0.77 " 0.04 mg/L (5% oxygen saturation) for 5°C fish respectively. The Pcrit levels corresponded to the hypoxia levels that initiated changes in metabolite concentrations at each temperature, thus indicating that largemouth bass undergo anaerobic metabolism. This study shows that the overall impact of hypoxia on largemouth bass yearlings was much greater in warmer water. These results indicate that hypoxia may become a very important physiological stress on younger life stages of fish as water temperatures increase with climate change.

Warmwater fish species, such as smailmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, may have access to additional favourable thermal habitat under increased surface-water temperatures, thereby shifting the northern limit of the distribution of the species further north in Canada and potentially negatively impacting native fish communities. A database comprised of over 50,000 lakes was assembled consisting of data on geography, lake morphology, water chemistry, climate, and fish community composition. Based on a comparison of several statistical approaches (multiple regression, regression tree, artificial neural networks, and Bayesian multiple regression) and several climate-change scenarios, water temperatures were predicted to increase by as much as 18°C by 2100, with the greatest increase in water temperature in northern Canada. By 2100, smallmouth bass thermal habitat is predicted to shift to the north with the majority of Canadian lakes expected to contain suitable thermal habitat. A comparison of logistic regression, classification tree, linear discriminant analysis, and artificial neural networks indicated that smallmouth bass distribution is predicted by winter and summer air temperatures. Climate-change modeling, in conjunction with artificial neural networks, predicted that smallmouth bass will have suitable thermal habitat throughout the majority of aquatic systems in the continental United States and Canada by 2100. The presence of smallmouth bass will negatively impact native fish communities, particularly native lake trout populations. Lake trout populations residing in smaller lakes are more vulnerable to the effects of smallmouth bass establishment due to the decreased presence of alternate prey resources. Examination of the pelagic and littoral forage fish communities identified nearly 9,700 lake trout populations threatened by 2100AD under climate-change scenarios, due to the potential invasion of smallmouth bass. The current range expansion of smallmouth bass has been facilitated by stocking by governmental agencies, unauthorized and accidental introduction by anglers, and dispersal through drainage networks. This stresses the importance of intensifying public education and regulation to limit the potential dispersal of invasive species, such as smallmouth bass.

This study investigated the response of eosinophilic cells and macrophage aggregates to parasites in the livers, spleens, and gonads of Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides. Largemouth Bass were sampled from three bodies of water in the Chattahoochee Valley of varying levels of urbanization. Histopathology of the aforementioned organs was conducted to observe both the parasite density and immune response. Eosinophilic cells were shown to be the most robust indicator of immune response based on parasite density. Bass from more urbanized areas were shown to have significantly lower immune response and significantly higher parasite density. The ovaries had the strongest immune response of all organs observed, and the livers showed the weakest response.

Book excerpt: "Climate change has emerged as an increasingly critical threat to freshwater systems that may affect freshwater fishes through direct effects on their thermal physiology, but also indirectly by altering the magnitude of biotic interactions and/or the relative abundance of co-habiting species. Understanding the direct and indirect effects of temperature represents a significant knowledge gap that may be vital to effective conservation strategies for freshwater fishes. This is especially true for already imperiled species because these taxa tend to be more sensitive to changes in their environment and are already contending with other, and potentially interactive, stressors. In this thesis, I used a combination of ecophysiology and field-based techniques to examine effects of elevated water temperature on Pugnose Shiner, Notropis anogenus, an endangered fish species in Canada. In Chapter 1, I investigated effects of temperature on critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and standard metabolic rate (SMR) in juvenile Pugnose Shiner reared for 4 months across five different temperatures. CTmax was measured under normoxia and acute exposure to hypoxia to test for oxygen sensitivity of upper thermal limits in this species. CTmax increased with elevated water temperature. Agitation temperature (temperature at which fish show behavioural signs of thermal stress) also increased with rearing temperature and occurred on average 4.32°C above acclimation temperatures. CTmax was lower when fish were acutely exposed to hypoxia during CTmax trials and showed no increase between 19 and 25°C. Surprisingly, CTmax under acute hypoxia increased sharply at the highest temperature. SMR increased between 16 and 25°C, and then declined significantly at 28°C, indicating that the ability of Pugnose Shiner to reverse thermodynamic effects on SMR is limited and there was no evidence of long-term thermal compensation. Interestingly, gill size (e.g. total gill filament length, hemibranch area) increased with long-term exposure to high temperature, which may increase oxygen uptake capacity and help to fuel increased metabolic demands. In Chapter 2, I explored the role of temperature, other abiotic factors, and co-occurring species in shaping the fine-scale distribution of Pugnose Shiner within Thompson’s Bay in the upper St. Lawrence River, Ontario. Multivariate analyses and occupancy modelling were used to assess how environmental variables and species co-occurrence accounted for variation in the distribution of Pugnose Shiner. Environmental variables, including temperature, were significant predictors of community composition. Pugnose Shiner was associated with clear, cool sites far from the inner bay with high vegetation density, including Chara vulgaris. Pugnose Shiner was negatively associated with Brook Silverside (Labidesthes sicculus), Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides), Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), and juvenile Lepomis spp. This has important conservation implications because some native centrarchids are increasing in abundance with climate warming, which may threaten persistence of rare and imperiled cyprinids, including Pugnose Shiner. Although Pugnose Shiner showed little evidence of thermal compensation (SMR increased with acclimation temperature), it did show acclimation capacity in terms of thermal tolerance and increased gill size. Captive rearing may provide opportunities for thermal hardening in reintroduction efforts, and targeted hunting of expanding species may buffer Pugnose Shiner from the negative effects of elevated water temperature. Overall, my research highlights the importance of examining multiple traits at multiple scales of biological organization to quantify effects of elevated water temperature on freshwater fishes and guide conservation recommendations for imperiled species"--
