Book excerpt: Summarizing data derived from a four-year combined longitudinal/ cross-sectional comparative study of the implementation of one standards-based middle school curriculum program, Mathematics in Context, this book demonstrates the challenges of conducting comparative longitudinal research in the reality of school life. The study was designed to answer three questions: What is the impact on student performance of the Mathematics in Context instructional approach, which differs from most conventional mathematics texts in both content and expected pedagogy? How is this impact different from that of traditional instruction on student performance? What variables associated with classroom instruction account for variation in student performance? The researchers examined a range of variables that affected data collection. These variations highlight the need to study the effects of the culture in which student learning is situated when analyzing the impact of standards-based curricula on student achievement. This book is directed to educational researchers interested in curriculum implementation, mathematics educators interested in the effects of using reform curriculum materials in classrooms, evaluators and research methodologists interested in structural modeling and scaling of instructional variables, and educational policy makers concerned about reform efforts.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether computer-based instruction impacted student academic achievement and attitudes towards using technology in the classroom. This action research study used a quantitative research methods approach by analyzing pre- and post-tests and student surveys. Twenty-eight third grade students participated in the study by completing a pre- and post-test, an Attitude Survey, and lessons on fractions over a three-week period. The participants were randomly grouped into two instructional groups of fourteen; computer-based and teacher led. The researcher analyzed both pre- and post-tests to determine how much growth students made after receiving instruction in their group. The researcher also analyzed surveys taken from the computer-based instruction group at the start and conclusion of the study to determine changes in attitudes for students learning through computer-based instruction. Findings from the study indicate that the use of computer-based instruction positively impacts student academic achievement. The results also found that the extended use of computer-based learning in the classroom improves student attitudes towards learning and technology. However, data also showed computer-based instruction is not as effective on academic achievement as teacher-led instruction. Recommendations from the study include increasing the access and opportunities to use computer-based learning in the classroom. Additionally, using computer-based instruction as a supplementary form to teacher-led instruction can potentially provide students will a stronger understanding of any topic.

And schools probably exert more influence on children’s development and life chances than any environment beyond the home and neighbourhood. The purpose of this book is to document some important ways schools influence children’s development and to describe various models and methods for studying schooling effects. Key features include: Comprehensive Coverage – this is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of what is known about schools as a context for human development. Topical coverage ranges from theoretical foundations to investigative methodologies and from classroom-level influences such as teacher-student relations to broader influences such as school organization and educational policies. Cross-Disciplinary – this volume brings together the divergent perspectives, methods and findings of scholars from a variety of disciplines, among them educational psychology, developmental psychology, school psychology, social psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and educational policy. Chapter Structure – to ensure continuity, chapter authors describe 1) how schooling influences are conceptualized 2) identify their theoretical and methodological approaches 3) discuss the strengths and weaknesses of existing research and 4) highlight implications for future research, practice, and policy. Methodologies – chapters included in the text feature various methodologies including longitudinal studies, hierarchical linear models, experimental and quasi-experimental designs, and mixed methods.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of implementing a math intervention curriculum supported by a computer based program for 81h grade students with learning disabilities. All students were significantly below grade level in math and received instruction in a Special Day Class. Students spent 12 weeks utilizing both the piloted math intervention curriculum supported by the computer based programs prior to state testing. A student survey was shared on how students felt using both programs and if they felt it had improved their math skills. Results of the program were compared to the pretest and post test results collected by the computer based program. Using a state adopted structured math intervention resulted in better retention of skills as well as more engagement in activities. Key Words: Math intervention, special education, middle school, learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction compared to the traditional instruction of a classroom teacher in mathematics. The results of the study are based a series of tests administered to two classes of Algebra I students. The test scores are used to analyze the achievement each class demonstrated through the tests. The study also examines the perceptions of students' experiences using computer-assisted instruction and its ability to meet their educational needs. The study uses two randomized classes in a high school setting. The two classes are Algebra I classes dealing with factoring polynomial expressions. The control group received traditional classroom instruction on factoring. The experimental group received instruction from an on-line learning system, called NovaNET. Both classes had equal number of students (n = 25) and were given their respective instruction during the same time period. The experimental group participated in a group discussion at the end of the study to relate their experience with computer-assisted instruction. A two-sample t-test was used to determine that there was no significant difference between the two forms of instruction. The students also did not show any significant difference in retaining the information taught. These analyses were determined from a posttest and retention test administered during the research period. Another analysis was performed on individual concepts learned during factoring. The item analysis of the posttest showed inconclusive data. During the discussion, the students' comments leaned toward favoring a more traditional classroom environment. Some students did recognize the power of the computer and suggested that both forms of instruction be integrated. Overall, the results suggest that there is no significant difference between the two methods of teaching. Both methods have positive features that bring the best out of instruction. It is recommended that co.
