Book excerpt: We present findings from an evaluation study of the Dual-Teacher program, a computer- assisted instruction program, that makes lecture videos and other teaching resources from an elite urban middle school available through the internet to schools in poor and remote areas in China. The unique design of the study allows us to not just estimate the effect of the program on student performance but distinguish the direct effect coming from students' exposure to the lecture videos in class and the indirect effect due to improved instruction quality of the local teacher who uses the lecture videos in lesson preparation. Using the difference-in-differences method, we find that the Dual-Teacher program improves student performance in math by 0.978 standard deviations over the three-year middle school education, of which 0.343 standard deviations are attributable to the indirect effect. We also find that the positive impacts of the program are cumulative and robust to student and teacher characteristics as well as a plethora of other considerations. From a policy perspective, our findings suggest that the Dual-Teacher program is an effective and low cost means to improve education outcomes in underserved areas and hence help close cross-region gaps in education.

Book excerpt: Remedial mathematics courses are often taught at post-secondary institutions in response to the substantial number of students entering college who lack the skills and motivation necessary to be successful in college level mathematics courses. Much of the research on remedial mathematics instruction shows that it has been only moderately successful in improving the students' achievement in mathematics or their attitudes towards mathematics (Adelman, 1995; Burley, 1994; Wieschenberg, 1994). The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of web-based computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and traditional lecture-based instruction in a college remedial mathematics course. The remedial mathematics course was taught to two groups of college students, which included a treatment group that received CAI, and a control group that received traditional lecture instruction without the use of computers. The ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) web-based software program, was used in conjunction with lecture-based instruction for the treatment group. Mathematics achievement and student attitudes towards mathematics were assessed by means of pre- and post-tests administered at the beginning of the semester and again at the end of the semester. Student withdrawal rates and passing rates for the course were also compared for the two groups. The statistical analysis of the data compiled in this study included the use of paired and independent group t-tests, analysis of covariance, and z-tests. The paired t-test results showed that there were statistically significant achievement gains within the treatment and control groups as a result of the instruction that each group received. However the independent t-tests and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in achievement gains between the two groups when the study ended. The paired t-test results on the attitude assessment showed no statistically significant difference within each group after the study was completed. In addition, the independent t-tests and the ANCOVA results showed no significant change in attitudes between the two groups when the experiment had been completed. The z-test analyses also showed no significant difference in the withdrawal or passing rates between the treatment and control groups.

These "digital natives" learn in new and different ways, so educators need new approaches to make learning both real and relevant for today's students. Marc Prensky, who first coined the terms "digital natives" and "digital immigrants," presents an intuitive yet highly innovative and field-tested partnership model that promotes 21st-century student learning through technology. Partnership pedagogy is a framework in which: - Digitally literate students specialize in content finding, analysis, and presentation via multiple media - Teachers specialize in guiding student learning, providing questions and context, designing instruction, and assessing quality - Administrators support, organize, and facilitate the process schoolwide - Technology becomes a tool that students use for learning essential skills and "getting things done" With numerous strategies, how-to's, partnering tips, and examples, Teaching Digital Natives is a visionary yet practical book for preparing students to live and work in today's globalized and digitalized world.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if computer assisted instructional (CAI) tutorials in high school biology differ in effectiveness in terms of student academic achievement when compared with the more traditional lecture/discussion type of instruction. Additionally, student attitudes toward CAI were measured using a student attitude questionnaire. The sample was three general biology classes. Alphabetical class ranking lists were prepared, which were then alternately separated into the treatment group and control group, producing three sets of two groups of students of comparable academic achievement in the subject matter. The control group received the traditional lecture/discussion photosynthesis lesson and the treatment group, the CAI photosynthesis unit. For the genetics lesson, the two groups reversed roles, with the former control group receiving the CAI instruction. Posttest results indicated that there was no significant difference in student achievement between the two instructional methods. Tutorial CAI's appear to be equal to traditional classroom instruction in their effectiveness in teaching new materials. On the whole, students who worked with the CAI in photosynthesis were more favorable to this method of instruction than those who worked with the genetics CAI unit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting and illustrating several important and interesting theoretical trends that have emerged in the continuing development of instructional technology, this book's organizational framework is based on the notion of two opposing camps. One evolves out of the intelligent tutoring movement, which employs artificial-intelligence technologies in the service of student modeling and precision diagnosis, and the other emerges from a constructivist/developmental perspective that promotes exploration and social interaction, but tends to reject the methods and goals of the student modelers. While the notion of opposing camps tends to create an artificial rift between groups of researchers, it represents a conceptual distinction that is inherently more interesting and informative than the relatively meaningless divide often drawn between "intelligent" and "unintelligent" instructional systems. An evident trend is that researchers in both "camps" view their computer learning environments as "cognitive tools" that can enhance learning, performance, and understanding. Cognitive tools are objects provided by the instructional environment that allow students to incorporate new auxiliary methods or symbols into their social problem solving which otherwise would be unavailable. A final section of the book represents researchers who are assimilating and accommodating the wisdom and creativity of their neighbors from both camps, perhaps forming the look of technology for the future. When the idea of model tracing in a computer-based environment is combined with appreciation for creative mind-extension cognitive tools and for how a community of learners can facilitate learning, a camp is created where AI technologists and social constructivist learning theorists can feel equally at home.
