There were four experimental conditions: (a) fixed pay without feedback, (b) fixed pay with feedback, (c) individual monetary incentive pay without feedback, and (d) individual monetary incentive pay with feedback. Participants were 92 undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions. Participants attended a covariate session and five experimental sessions, which were 45 minutes each. The experimental task was a computerized medical data entry task and the primary dependent variable was the average number of correctly completed medical records per session. The results were analyzed using a two-factor ANCOVA. Feedback significantly increased performance; however, incentive pay did not increase performance in comparison to fixed pay. Feedback enhanced performance by an average of 22%. These results are consistent with earlier research that has demonstrated the effectiveness of feedback procedures that contain both objective and evaluative components. The results extend earlier research by confirming that this type of feedback increases the performance of paid, as well as unpaid, participants. Because there was no statistically significant pay effect, however, the results are ambiguous with respect to whether this type of feedback procedure enhances incentivized performance.

Researchers in different areas are either not aware of, or seem to fail to see the relevance of findings from other areas even though it would seem that the findings are directly relevant to their own. One striking example of this is to be found in research that focuses on the effects of evaluation on performance. This volume integrates thinking from five different research traditions - Achievement Goals, Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation, Goal Setting, Social Loafing, and Social Facilitation - through the unique format of a give-and-take conversation between leading academics from each.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to assess if evaluative feedback through social media could affect athletic performance in a discrete task. Participants (N = 56) who did not self-identify as a competitive dart player completed the study. All participants completed two sessions that each incorporated nine dart throws. Accuracy was measured for both sessions by calculating absolute error (distance of each throw from a criterion point). Between sessions, all the participants were randomly introduced to one of three types of evaluative feedback given via social media; positive, negative, or neutral. Participants completed the BIS/BAS scale to assess the motivational responses to the feedback. A 3 (group) x 2 (time) mixed factorial ANOVA indicated no significant main effect for time (p = .263) group (type of evaluative feedback) (p = .626) and no significant interaction between time and group (p = .641). No significant correlations between the BIS/BAS scale and performance were found. The lack of significance may be explained by a low emotional attachment to the task, dart throwing and the use of novice dart players which resulted in a number of errant throws.

Book excerpt: Feedback is often necessary to provide guidance for future decisions, and factors relating to feedback, including the way feedback information is framed, how frequently it is provided, and the relevance of that feedback in relation to one's decision, have been designated as influential for decision making tendencies. Unfortunately, research on what produces the most effective feedback is mixed, and the relationship between these factors and resulting evaluative and behavioral outcomes in less clear. Four studies explored the relationship between feedback frame and frequency by addressing whether overall task feedback framed positively and receiving more frequent trial outcome feedback led to more positive performance evaluations and improvements in subsequent task performance (Studies 1A and 1B), how these evaluative and behavioral outcomes varied across different trial feedback frequency intervals (Study 2A), and whether more relevant trial feedback influenced the pattern of these results (Study 2B). Across the four studies, it was noted that the frequency of trial feedback was more influential for task performance outcomes, while the overall task feedback frame was more influential for performance evaluation outcomes. In addition, more relevant outcome feedback was seen to influence the relationship of feedback variables more for performance evaluations than task performance. Taken together, these studies provide some clarity as to how different types and presentations of feedback produce different evaluative and behavioral outcomes and show initial direction as to when framing task feedback and providing trial feedback more frequently can lead to better, more normatively correct decision making. Theoretical and practical implications, as well as reasons why effects were not consistent across studies, are also discussed.
