Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether cold-water immersion or foam rolling is more effective treatment of delayed onset muscle soreness. No other study has directly compared these two variables for DOMS. Eight women's soccer players participated as subjects. They each completed a DOMS-inducing protocol which involved eight sets of ten reps of a trap bar deadlift. Each subject performed all the different recovery methods of cold-water immersion, foam rolling, and a control/no recovery. They performed the recovery method immediately after exercise, as well as 24 and 48 hours after. There was a minimum of three days in between each exercise day to allow for appropriate recovery. Delayed onset muscle soreness was measured by a perceived soreness on a visual analog scale, as well as a pressure pain threshold value. It was hypothesized that measurements on the visual analog scale would be lowest for CWI, moderate for foam rolling, and highest for control. It was also hypothesized that pressure pain threshold values would be highest for CWI, moderate for foam rolling, and lowest for the control. It was found that CWI had the lowest visual analog scale means as well as the highest pressure pain threshold means, which indicates that it was the best recovery method for alleviating DOMS. Data concluded that (1) cold-water immersion and foam rolling are both effective forms of recovery. When compared to a control group, they are significantly better at reducing delayed onset muscle soreness. (2) Cold-water immersion is a slightly better form of recovery, in terms of reducing DOMS, than foam rolling. (3) More research needs to be done directly comparing the two, as well as more research in general on their ability to decrease DOMS in general.

Book excerpt: Achieving adequate and appropriate recovery from exercise is essential in ensuring optimal performance during repeated bouts of exercise. The use of various recovery interventions has become popular in an attempt to enhance subsequent performance and accelerate post-exercise recovery. The application of various post-exercise hydrotherapy interventions has become increasingly popular, however, the majority of current recovery practices appear to be based largely on anecdotal evidence as opposed to rigorous scientific research or evidence based findings. Physiologically, various hydrotherapy protocols have been shown to affect the body via fluid shifts (interstitial to intravascular space), changes in blood flow and cardiovascular function, and reductions in oedema. The possible psychological effects of water immersion must also be considered, with athletes commonly reporting reduced sensations of fatigue and soreness following immersion. Current literature suggests both hydrostatic pressure and water temperature to be important factors influencing the success of hydrotherapy. The overall aim of the present thesis was to enhance current knowledge and understanding with regards to the physiological and performance effects of various forms of hydrotherapy, used as a post-exercise recovery intervention. Initially, four cold water immersion interventions were compared to active recovery, performed between two bouts of high intensity cycling in hot environmental conditions. Effectiveness of recovery was determined via performance in a subsequent exercise bout; in addition, core body temperature, lactate, and heart rate were recorded. The remaining studies were designed to investigate the effects of cold water immersion, hot water immersion, contrast water therapy, and passive recovery 4 (control) following exercise-induced fatigue and exercise-induced muscle damage. Rate of recovery was assessed through changes in performance, core body temperature, thigh girths, blood markers, and perceived exertion/soreness. The results of the combined studies indicate cold water immersion to be more effective than active recovery when performed immediately post-exercise between two bouts of high intensity cycling in hot environmental conditions. Additionally, both cold water immersion and contrast water therapy were effective in aiding recovery from exercise-induced fatigue and exercise-induced muscle damage. Performance variables indicated an improved maintenance or return of performance following these recovery protocols. The present studies have provided additional information to the limited knowledge base regarding the effect of post-exercise hydrotherapy interventions, specifically, the effect of such interventions on subsequent athletic performance. In conclusion, cold water immersion and contrast water therapy appear to be superior to hot water immersion, active recovery, and passive recovery following fatiguing and muscle damaging exercise. Functional and physiological recovery was enhanced following the use of these two recovery protocols.

Book excerpt: The desire to improve muscle function and prevent overuse injuries from exercise and throughout training has led to the development of various methods to aid recovery and track readiness to perform. Ergogenic aids such as cold-water immersion, massage, and dynamic recovery procedures may have positive effects but the results of the related research remain equivocal. Furthermore, novel interventions in this scenario, like compression garments, ice vests, and photobiomodulation therapy are promising but need more evidence-based data to support their effectiveness. Similarly, to properly monitor individual physical conditioning, there is a growing interest toward unobtrusive measures to accurately represent physiological status during and/or after exercise. There are several techniques being used, such as subjective ratings of well-being, heart rate monitoring, hormonal and hematological profile assessments. However, more sensitive indexes like heart rate variability and muscle activation (voluntary and/or involuntary) are arising as attractive alternatives that may delineate physical conditioning status and readiness to perform more precisely than the aforementioned measures. The purpose of this Research Topic is to critically evaluate and summarize recent data from observational and intervention studies related to non-invasive methods designed to promote recovery and objectively monitor training status. Their association to physical performance and physiological recovery in athletes during training and competition is a major focus of this Topic.

Book excerpt: "The high-intensity, physically demanding nature of team-sport exercise invokes physiological perturbations often resulting in short- and long-term reductions in muscle function and increased symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). When such exercise bouts are performed in hot environmental conditions and/or include exposure to intense physical collisions between opposing players, the physiological load of exercise can be exacerbated. Consequently, post-exercise recovery strategies including cold water immersion (CWI) are commonly implemented in order to minimise the deleterious symptoms associated with team-sport exercise, and optimise the quality of subsequent performance. Despite the increased popularity of CWI, minimal research has focused on the benefits following team-sport exercise and more specifically, there remains a paucity of research evaluating the subsequent effects of cold therapy on the recovery of neuromuscular function following the demands associated with team-sport exercise. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to examine the effects of post-exercise cold therapy on the recovery of neuromuscular function following a variety of exercise conditions related to team-sport activity"--Abstract, p. v.

Book excerpt: The Purpose of this study was to determine the most effective method of recovery from an exhausting workout by comparing passive, active, and cold-water immersion (CWI). Exercise induced muscle damage (EIDM) is the micro trauma that occurs during strenuous exercise. Recovery is the physiologic response period following intense exercise where the body repairs EIMD, adapts to exercise, and refuels tissue for performance. There are many physiological and psychological factors involved in recovery. For example, active recovery may be advantageous because it promotes greater blood circulation to the damaged tissue. CWI may be advantageous because it serves to limit inflammation. By manipulating these factors it was hypothesized that CWI would be the most effective method of recovery. The Hanover College Institutional Review Board approved this study.
