It presents findings from a longitudinal study of a cohort of students who were tested with state assessments at grade 4 in 2000, again at grade 8 in 2004 and, finally at grade 10 in 2006. Graduation rates for five large-class sized schools and five small-class sized school populations were established in 2008. All scores (n=1137) were matched across time enabling students from similar socioeconomic backgrounds from schools that were considered small (average class size, n=11) to schools that were large (average, n= 20). The paper's focus is on the extent that students from schools that maintained large and small classes differed in selected opportunities to learn and educational outcomes. The approach to the study utilized both large scale state databases for student backgrounds and outcomes and interviews with school personnel in order to identify school policy and practices that might be linked to performance differences.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this two-phase, sequential mixed methods (QUAN-qual) approach was to analyze the relationship between class size and academic achievement in rural, economically disadvantaged third grade classrooms and how teachers perceive class size as affecting their instructional and classroom management methods. Data collection and analysis for the study involved 3,812 third grade students in 204 classrooms collected from nine rural, economically disadvantaged school districts in the southeastern region of Georgia. Additionally, a researcher-developed questionnaire was used to collect data from third grade teachers teaching in the same nine rural, economically disadvantaged school districts. Initial correlation analyses indicated a positive relationship between class size and academic achievement. Regression results indicated that the percentage of gifted students, the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and the class size were significant predictors of reading achievement levels. For mathematics achievement levels, regression results showed that the percentage of gifted students, the percentage of Black students, and the class size were significant predictors. Further analyses involved filtering the data to only include class sizes of at least 15 students per teacher. For both reading and mathematics achievement, class size was not associated with achievement. Regression results indicated that the percentage of gifted students and the percentage of economically disadvantaged students were significant predictors of reading achievement. For mathematics achievement, regression results showed that the percentage of gifted students and the percentage of Black students were significant predictors of achievement. Questionnaire data revealed teachers felt smaller classes would affect their instructional practices by facilitating the increased use of small group instructional arrangements, hands-on activities, one-on-one instruction, and differentiation of instruction. Respondents either stated that class size did not affect their classroom management plans, or smaller classes would allow their classroom management plans to be less strict, have more student freedom, and have more positive reinforcement. All 51 respondents believed that smaller class sizes had a positive impact on student achievement due to the teachers being able to provide more individualized instruction and having less classroom management issues. Class sizes of 20 or less students per teacher were identified as being ideal due to such class sizes being easier to provide individualized instruction, easier to use group activities, and easier to manage behavior.

It will discuss the causes and challenges of a large class size, as well as give recommendations for improvement. Therefore a study was created, where data collection was accomplished through the use of a questionnaire and the study employed a descriptive research design. A simple random sampling technique was used. The study has a sample size of 284 and the SPSS software was used to analyze the gathered data. The study revealed that 86.6% of the participants agreed that their academic performance is negatively impacted by the large class, whereas 9.9% disagreed with this viewpoint and 3.5% were uncertain. Again, out of the total responses, 200 individuals (70.4%) agreed that managing a large class poses a significant challenge for teachers due to uncontrollable noise caused by pupils play activities, while 24.7% disagreed and 4.9% were uncertain. Furthermore, 84.2% agreed with the idea of admitting students based on classroom capacity as the strategy in controlling large class size, while only 10.6% disagreed and 5.3% were uncertain. In conclusion, class size is a crucial determinant of educational outcomes. Students require a liberating and supportive atmosphere to facilitate and enhance their learning. In order for successful teaching to occur, teachers require a conducive environment and an acceptable student-to-teacher ratio. The study recommends that government should allocate significant resources towards enhancing the educational infrastructure and creating a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning. Finally, school administrators should admit students based on the available learning resources.

I isolate the credibly random component of population variation in each grade and school district and use this component to generate instrumental variables for class size and composition. I also exploit the discontinuous changes in class size that occur when natural population variation triggers a change in the number of classes in a grade in a school. Discontinuity-based results are both consistent and precise only when applied to within-district changes in class size and population. I find that reductions in class size from a base of 15 to 30 students have no effect on student achievement. The estimates are precise enough to identify improvements in math, reading, or writing achievement of just 3/100ths of a standard deviation. I find that the presence of black students in a class, in an of itself, has no effect on achievement. I demonstrate that estimates of the effect of racial composition that rely on between-district comparisons suffer from substantial bias. Finally, I show that more female classes perform significantly better in writing in the 4th through 8th grades and in math in the 4th grade. Comparison of the effects to average male-female differences in test scores suggest that gender composition alters classroom conduct
