This may place the individuals at undue risk. Moderate intensity exercise may improve psychological and mood state at normoxia but little is known about its effect in hypoxia. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of two exercise intensities on cognitive performance and mood state in normobaric hypoxia. METHOD: 19 young, healthy men completed the ANAM versions of the Go/No-Go task and Running Memory Continuous Performance Task (RMCPT) during baseline (21% O2) as well as during rest and cycle ergometer workloads that elicited 40 and 60% of adjusted VO2max in normobaric hypoxia (12.5% O2). RESULTS: During exercise at 40% and 60% of adjusted VO2max improved throughput score in RMCPT (p=0.023, p=0.006, respectively) and total mood disturbance (TMD) (p=0.009) compared to rest in hypoxia (p=0.015). In addition there was improved TMD during recovery compare to rest in hypoxia. There is no significant difference in throughput score of RMCPT and TMD between two exercise intensities. CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated that at moderate exercise (i.e., 40-60% adjusted VO2max) attenuated the adverse effects of hypoxia on cognitive performance and mood. This finding may be beneficial for individuals to reduce the risk of impaired cognitive function and mood. Further studies are needed to replicate this current finding, and to clarify the possible mechanisms associated with the potential benefits of exercise on mood state in normobaric hypoxia.

Among these cognitive domains, memory is one of the least studied within the acute exercise literature. Despite the lack of attention in the exercise literature, memory is an intriguing and important domain of study. Most effects of acute exercise on cognitive function abate relatively quickly following exercise cessation. However, if exercise can improve the ability to process and/or store newly acquired information, then it is conceivable that the product of these effects (i.e. - improved recall) could be observed well after exercise cessation. The purpose of this study was twofold. The primary purpose was to test whether a single bout of aerobic exercise affects performance on a long-term memory task. The secondary purpose was to determine whether that effect operates primarily through the encoding and/or consolidation processes of long-term memory formation. The secondary purpose was tested by manipulating the timing of exercise relative to exposure to the to-be-remembered material (word list). A within-subjects, repeated measures design was used. Participants completed 3 conditions in randomized order, including 2 treatment conditions and one control condition. Treatment conditions involved participants exercising either immediately prior to or immediately following word list exposure. Exercise prior to exposure could impact encoding or consolidation (E+C); whereas, exercise following exposure could only impact consolidation (C). The control condition involved no exercise (NE) at all. Exercise consisted of 20 minutes, at moderate intensity, on a cycle ergometer, as well as a 5-minute warm-up and a 5-minutecool-down (30 minutes total). Memory for the word list was assessed 60 minutes and 24 hours after participants had finished listening to it. Analyses revealed that the E+C condition produced significantly better recall of the word list following both the 60-minute (?p2 = 0.24) and 24-hour (?p2 = 0.22) delays. Pairwise comparisons revealed statistically significant differences in recall for the E+C condition versus the NE condition; however, no differences were observed involving the C condition. Book excerpt: A growing body of literature suggests that higher levels of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness, as well as an alternative treatment such as low level laser therapy (LLLT), have beneficial effects on cognition, while sedentary lifestyle-induced obesity and vascular risk negatively influence cognition. However, the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and vascular risk on cognitive function and the effect of an acute bout of very vigorous aerobic exercise (acute exercise) on cognitive performance has not yet been investigated. Additionally, the effects of combined acute exercise and LLLT treatments on cognitive performance have not yet been characterized. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to conduct a series of three research studies ranging from a cross-sectional exploratory study about the association of cardiorespiratory fitness, obesity, and vascular risk on cognitive function, to an experimentally designed study that compared the effects of acute exercise, LLLT, and the combination of these two treatments on cognitive performance in young adults. Study1 examined the relationship among cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen consumption, VO2max), obesity indices (body mass index, BMI; waist circumstance), and vascular risk (C-reactive protein; CRP). Cognitive function included crystalized intelligence (Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test; KBIT), executive functions of inhibition (Stroop test), switching (Trail making test; TMT), attention (Psychomotor Vigilance Task; PVT), and working memory (Delayed-Match-to-Sample, DMS). Study 2 determined the effect of acute exercise on cognitive performance including executive response inhibition (Stroop test) and response switching (TMT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNDF). Study 3 compared the effectiveness of LLLT and acute exercise on cognitive performance, which included attention (PVT) and working memory (DMS). Results demonstrated there was a beneficial effect of physical exercise-induced improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness on vascular risk and cognitive functions particularly in working memory and inhibitory control (Study1). Acute exercise improved performance in inhibitory control and increased the BNDF level compared to the control condition, suggesting the acute exercise-induced the increase in BDNF level may be at least in part of mediating the cognitive performance improvement (Study 2). All three conditions (acute exercise, LLLT, or the combination) improved performance in attention and working memory, as measured by reaction time and response accuracy, when compared to a control group. Specially, the combined group showed a trend of greater improvement in attention and worming memory performance (Study 3). Taken together, the results of this research series suggest that acute exercise and LLLT can improve cognitive performance, which is also mediated by health indices including cardiorespiratory fitness, obesity, and vascular risk. It is anticipated that these findings will make substantive contributions to the empirical literature concerning the beneficial effect of exercise and LLLT on cognitive health in young adults, given the current paucity of research.

Book excerpt: In the past, ‘traditional’ moderate-intensity continuous training (60-75% peak heart rate) was the type of physical activity most frequently recommended for both athletes and clinical populations (cf. American College of Sports Medicine guidelines). However, growing evidence indicates that high-intensity interval training (80-100% peak heart rate) could actually be associated with larger cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic function benefits and, thereby, physical performance gains for athletes. Similarly, recent data in obese and hypertensive individuals indicate that various mechanisms – further improvement in endothelial function, reductions in sympathetic neural activity, or in arterial stiffness – might be involved in the larger cardiovascular protective effects associated with training at high exercise intensities. Concerning hypoxic training, similar trends have been observed from ‘traditional’ prolonged altitude sojourns (‘Live High Train High’ or ‘Live High Train Low’), which result in increased hemoglobin mass and blood carrying capacity. Recent innovative ‘Live Low Train High’ methods (‘Resistance Training in Hypoxia’ or ‘Repeated Sprint Training in Hypoxia’) have resulted in peripheral adaptations, such as hypertrophy or delay in muscle fatigue. Other interventions inducing peripheral hypoxia, such as vascular occlusion during endurance/resistance training or remote ischemic preconditioning (i.e. succession of ischemia/reperfusion episodes), have been proposed as methods for improving subsequent exercise performance or altitude tolerance (e.g. reduced severity of acute-mountain sickness symptoms). Postulated mechanisms behind these metabolic, neuro-humoral, hemodynamics, and systemic adaptations include stimulation of nitric oxide synthase, increase in anti-oxidant enzymes, and down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, although the amount of evidence is not yet significant enough. Improved O2 delivery/utilization conferred by hypoxic training interventions might also be effective in preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases, as well as contributing to improve exercise tolerance and health status of patients. For example, in obese subjects, combining exercise with hypoxic exposure enhances the negative energy balance, which further reduces weight and improves cardio-metabolic health. In hypertensive patients, the larger lowering of blood pressure through the endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway and the associated compensatory vasodilation is taken to reflect the superiority of exercising in hypoxia compared to normoxia. A hypoxic stimulus, in addition to exercise at high vs. moderate intensity, has the potential to further ameliorate various aspects of the vascular function, as observed in healthy populations. This may have clinical implications for the reduction of cardiovascular risks. Key open questions are therefore of interest for patients suffering from chronic vascular or cellular hypoxia (e.g. work-rest or ischemia/reperfusion intermittent pattern; exercise intensity; hypoxic severity and exposure duration; type of hypoxia (normobaric vs. hypobaric); health risks; magnitude and maintenance of the benefits). Outside any potential beneficial effects of exercising in O2-deprived environments, there may also be long-term adverse consequences of chronic intermittent severe hypoxia. Sleep apnea syndrome, for instance, leads to oxidative stress and the production of reactive oxygen species, and ultimately systemic inflammation. Postulated pathophysiological changes associated with intermittent hypoxic exposure include alteration in baroreflex activity, increase in pulmonary arterial pressure and hematocrit, changes in heart structure and function, and an alteration in endothelial-dependent vasodilation in cerebral and muscular arteries. There is a need to explore the combination of exercising in hypoxia and association of hypertension, developmental defects, neuro-pathological and neuro-cognitive deficits, enhanced susceptibility to oxidative injury, and possibly increased myocardial and cerebral infarction in individuals sensitive to hypoxic stress. The aim of this Research Topic is to shed more light on the transcriptional, vascular, hemodynamics, neuro-humoral, and systemic consequences of training at high intensities under various hypoxic conditions.

A series of three studies were conducted to address this knowledge gap. The first study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed 90 effects from 16 randomized controlled trials to examine the effect of acute exercise on cognitive function in healthy older adults aged 60 years or above. The results revealed that acute exercise elicited a small but significant improvement in cognitive function compared to the non-exercise control condition (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.17, p = 0.003), and greater improvements were found in time- than accuracy-related cognitive outcomes (SMD = 0.24 versus 0.11, p 0.05). The second study investigated the effects of a single bout of moderate-intensity walking on cognitive and vascular function in physically inactive older adults aged 60 years or above. Compared to the control (sitting) condition, acute exercise (30-min walking at 100 steps/min) significantly improved performance in executive function, whereas reduced carotid to femoral pulse wave velocity (p-values 0.05). Book excerpt: Anxiety is a prevalent issue on college campuses, and is associated with impaired cognition. Finding an affordable behavioral therapy that could enhance cognitive performance in the academic setting would be valuable. Acute exercise has been associated with both reduced anxiety and improved cognition. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on state anxiety (SA), cognition, and academic performance in college-aged individuals. Participants: Thirty college students, with high- (n=9) or low-trait (n=21) anxiety, were solicited for this experiment. Fourteen were females and sixteen were males. Methods: Participation required three lab visits, lasting 1-2 hours each. Demographic questionnaires and baseline assessments of cognitive function, academic achievement, trait anxiety, and fitness were performed during visit one. The latter two visits were counterbalanced between experimental and control conditions. The control condition involved sitting quietly for 34 minutes on a treadmill, while the experimental condition involved 34 minutes of aerobic treadmill exercise, 20% below Ventilatory Threshold. Measures of state anxiety, academic achievement, and inhibition were assessed at multiple time points afterward. Results: Reductions in SA were seen in high-trait anxious individuals for both conditions. High-trait anxious individuals had decreased SA immediately post-condition, increased SA during the cognitive tests, and decreased SA at the end of the session. As hypothesized, SA of the high-trait anxious group decreased significantly more from baseline to immediately post-exercise than it did for the low-trait anxious group (as the low-trait group had a very slight increase). Low-trait anxious individuals had less profound fluctuations in SA over time than high-trait anxious individuals. Overall, accuracy was fairly high for all tasks except for the N2-back task. RT was slower for tasks that were more difficult (i.e., incongruent and nontarget trials). Findings revealed generally greater accuracy, faster RT, and greater response variability for high-trait anxious individuals than low-trait anxious individuals on all tasks. However, these responses varied greatly depending on the condition and time of assessment. Exercise did seem to show a trend towards facilitating cognitive performance, but failed to reach significance on many accounts. However, this trend was not seen for N1-back and N2-back RT, because these were slower post-exercise for both groups. Thus, results are very inconclusive. Math SAT scores were higher after exercise than rest, for both groups. A similar trend was seen for Reading SAT scores.
