Book excerpt: The current study investigated the Portuguese-Americans’ attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help (i.e., therapy) by evaluating their acculturation and religiosity level. Twenty-two male and 49 female first-generation (being born outside of the United States) or second-generation (being born in the United States) Portuguese-Americans participated in this study. Online surveys were completed by CSU, Stanislaus students and they received experimental credit for their participation. Participants who completed the surveys in person were community members recruited from a local Portuguese bakery or a Portuguese Catholic Church and they received a $5 gift card for their participation. Both online and in-person participants completed three surveys: Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short-Survey (ATSPPH-S) measured attitudes towards help-seeking, the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH) measured the acculturation level of the Portuguese-American population, and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith (SCSORF) survey was used to measure the level of religiosity. It was hypothesized that Portuguese-Americans who reported higher levels of religiosity would have less favorable attitudes towards seeking therapy from a mental health professional as compared to those who were not as religious. It was also hypothesized that the generation level (first or second) would influence their attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help as it was associated with their level of acculturation. The researcher hypothesized that less acculturated (first-generation) Portuguese-Americans would have more negative attitudes towards seeking professional help compared to their (second-generation) who are more acculturated to the American culture. Analyses revealed that religiosity did not significantly impact attitudes towards seeking help. Results also revealed that second-generation Portuguese-Americans were more acculturated than first-generation Portuguese-Americans. Additionally, second-generation Portuguese-Americans had more favorable attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help compared to first-generation Portuguese-American.

Religiosity was also examined as a moderator between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. One hundred thirty one Muslim Arab Americans residing in the United States completed a survey consisting of basic demographics, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Formal Mental Health Services Instrument (ATSFMHS) to measure help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, the Psychological Acculturation Scale (PAS) to measure acculturation level, and the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitudes toward Islam to measure religiosity. This study tested three hypotheses using hierarchical multiple regression analysis to examine a) the main effect of acculturation level and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, b) the main effect of religiosity level and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, and c) the moderating effect of religiosity on the relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. A bivariate correlations analysis was also conducted to assess the relationship between acculturation, religiosity, help-seeking attitudes and the main demographic variables, age and gender. Data did not support the research hypotheses in this study; acculturation and religiosity did not have a significant relationship on help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. Religiosity did not moderate the impact of acculturation on help-seeking attitudes. However, unexpected findings revealed that gender and age were shown to have significance in predicting help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. Furthermore, correlation analyses found that gender was correlated with help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, while age was correlated with both help-seeking attitudes and religiosity. Additionally, acculturation was correlated with religiosity. The implications for clinical practices and service providers are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided.

Book excerpt: The present research examined the roles of various cultural and demographic characteristics (i.e., beliefs about mental illness etiology, religious orientation and acculturation) in individuals' attitudes toward seeking professional help. Data collected from a multiethnic sample of 255 English fluent adult participants [Haitians (n = 55), Cape Verdeans (n = 30), Dominicans (n = 41), Puerto Ricans (n = 39), Irish (n = 44), and Italians (n = 46)] were included in this secondary analysis. Participants voluntarily completed questionnaire packets for a previous study by the present author. Previously analyzed variables (e.g., beliefs about mental illness etiology and acculturation) and new variables (e.g., attitude towards seeking professional help and religious orientation) were included in multivariate analyses. ^ Overall, the results supported the hypotheses set forth in the present study. The findings showed significant differences in acculturation and attitude towards seeking professional help as a function of sex of participants. Male participants reported more immersion into their own ethnic groups as compared with female participants. Females in the present sample reported more positive attitude towards seeking professional help than males. No significant difference was found in religious orientation based on sex. ^ Additionally, the results revealed a significant relationship between ethnicity and individuals' attitudinal and demographic characteristics (i.e., acculturation, attitude towards seeking professional help, beliefs about mental illness etiology, religious orientation, education, occupation, and income). Specifically, attitudinal and demographic variables reliably predict individuals' ethnic group category. Book excerpt: Mental health stigma serves as a chronic barrier to help-seeking and in some cases exacerbates mental health conditions (SAMHSA, 2013). Researchers and clinicians have tried many different methods to reduce these negative attitudes. A popular and usually successful method is education on what mental illness is, its causes, prognosis, and the availability and effectiveness of treatment. Large scale educational efforts have not been adequate in addressing these issues. Therefore, studies are being tailored to find stereotypes within specific communities so as to come up with matching educational protocols (Corrigan & Penn, 2015). The current study explored attitudes among African Americans in comparison to Black immigrants concerning mental illness stigma and accessing mental health services and also examined the effect of acculturation on these attitudes. A convenience sample of African American and Black Immigrant adults completed a battery of inventories including the following: A demographic survey, The Community Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill scale (CAMI), and the Immigrant Bicultural or Multicultural Identity Scale (IBMI). All 68 participants completed the CAMI scale and the demographic survey, and the 44 immigrant participants completed the IBMI scale in addition. Findings indicated that African Americans were equally sympathetic and compassionate as Black immigrants but were more apprehensive of mental health care facilities being located in their neighborhoods. Also, Black immigrants who had lived in the U.S longer endorsed more positive attitudes than the recently immigrated.

Book excerpt: Acculturation, mental health literacy, and perceived barriers to care are aspects that influence help-seeking attitudes. Extensive literature reveals that increased acculturation influences positive attitudes toward formal mental health care. A growing body of literature examines mental health literacy as it relates to promoting help-seeking attitudes and actual behaviors. Additionally, addressing barriers to care is crucial in encouraging formal service use. The purposes of this study were to examine (1) the influences of acculturation, mental health literacy, and perceived barriers on help-seeking attitudes; and (2) how attitudes translate to formal and informal service use among diverse samples within the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Surveys (CPES) national dataset. Bivariate correlations revealed no significant relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes. Findings demonstrated significant paths from mental health literacy and perceived barriers to help-seeking attitudes among the sample (N = 874). Limited mental health literacy and more perceived barriers related to more negative help-seeking attitudes. Furthermore, greater negative attitudes toward formal care was negatively related to endorsing formal service use. There was no significant path from attitudes to informal care. In response to the lack of a significant relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes, a multigroup path model was conducted to examine differences among immigrant vs. US-born samples. Analyses revealed no significant differences between the two groups. Future studies may consider further exploring differences among immigrant and US-born samples in an effort to inform mental health practices aimed at improving service delivery among underserved communities.

Book excerpt: Research is needed to better understand the impact of migration on West African immigrants' mental health and their ability and willingness to seek traditional Western care. Therefore, the present quantitative study investigated the variance in attitudes toward seeking psychological help as predicted by degree of acculturation, severity of self-reported problems, and beliefs about the cause of mental health problems among West African immigrants in the U.S. The following research questions and hypothesis were addressed: What are the specific mental and physical health concerns of West African immigrants in the U.S.? Where do West African immigrants with mental health problems seek help? The hypothesis was that higher acculturation into the U.S. society, severity of self-reported problems, and interactional attribution beliefs about mental health problems would be significant predictors of attitudes toward seeking psychological help. Approximately 600 questionnaires were mailed to first generation West African immigrants. A total of 126 surveys were received representing a return rate of 21%. Of this number 15 were not usable. Analyses were based on the remaining 111 surveys. Each survey packet included a demographic questionnaire, a referral list for national mental health, counseling and crisis services, a business reply envelope, and a battery of 4 instruments including the Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPH), Behavioral Acculturation Scale (BAS), Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI), and the Mental Health Locus of Origin Scale (MHLO). Descriptive statistics were computed (percentages & frequencies) to answer the first and second research questions. In addition, one multiple regression, using forced entry method was performed to predict West African immigrants' attitudes toward seeking psychological help as measured by the total scores on the ATSPPH, using the BAS, BSI, and MHLO scores as predictors. Finally, Pearson product moment correlation analyses were performed among the variables in examining the regression results. The results identified interactional attribution beliefs about mental health problems as the only significant predictor. West African immigrants reported various concerns with their mental and physical health. In general, they reported preference for the use of informal systems of support to resolve their emotional concerns and the use of medical doctors for physical concerns.

The primary goal of this study was to examine whether the acculturation gap changed the relation between mental illness stigma and communication about personal mental health concerns with immigrant parents, which in turn could become a significant predictor of their help-seeking attitudes, as well as a barrier to seeking professional mental health services. Findings provided support to the direct and indirect effects of mental illness stigma through communication about mental health concerns on attitudes about help-seeking. The acculturation gap hypothesized to be a possible moderator for the stigma-communication about mental health concerns relationship among young adult ABCI was found to be significant for ABCI with a low mainstream culture acculturation gap. Discussion on the findings, limitations of the study, future research directions, and counseling implications are addressed.

The purpose of this study was to explore ways that religious factors interact with help-seeking attitudes as well as preferences for different help sources. Participants were 236 church members from 4 Christian groups. They completed religious measures, a help-seeking measure, and responses to mock brochures for traditional, nontraditional, and Christian mental health facilities. Both demographic and religious variables were found to predict help-seeking attitudes, although the relationships between help-seeking and religious predictors were less clear. Denominational differences were found in many of the religious variables. Several religious variables were related to the brochure responses, and the four denominations showed different patterns of preference for the brochures. Limitations and implications for practice and research are discussed.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of different cultural factors that may influence the help seeking attitudes of members of the African American community. Specifically, religious commitment, racial identity, and cultural mistrust were examined to determine the extent to which these factors predicted African American study participants attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. The Religious Commitment Inventory 10 (RCI 10; Worthington, Wade, Hight, Ripley, McCollough, Berry, Schmitt, Berry, Bursley, & O' Connor, 2003), Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS; Vandiver, Cross, Fhagen Smith, & Worrell, 2002; Worrell, Cross, & Vandiver, 2001), Cultural Mistrust Inventory (CMI; Terrell & Terrell, 1981), and Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH 10; Fischer & Farina, 1995) were used to measure study variables. A personal data form also helped obtain demographic information about the study participants. Participants comprised of a community based sample of 138 African Americans. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that scores lower on Internalized Multiculturalist Inclusive Subscale and higher on Cultural Mistrust Inventory and Pre Encounter Miseducation Subscale significantly predicted higher scores on Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale. Scores on Internalized Multiculturalist Inclusive explained the highest percentage of professional psychological help seeking attitudes followed by Cultural Mistrust and Pre Encounter Miseducation, respectively. These findings indicated that individuals who have a less multiculturally integrated sense of self, are more mistrusting of Whites, and hold more negative stereotypes about the Black community are less likely to perceive professional psychological services as beneficial. Implications of the study findings and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Researchers have long been interested in the relationship among the separate fields of psychology and religion. This dissertation seeks to explore the differences in the way protestant Christians with various religious orientations view mental illness and how these views relate to their attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. A total of 540 individuals from church congregations representing ten different denominations completed measures of religiosity, beliefs about mental illness, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Scores on these measures were analyzed to observe group differences between religious orientations and correlations among the orientations and dependent variables of belief about mental illness and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Analyses revealed significant group differences between extrinsic religiosity and all other religious orientations as it pertained to stereotypical beliefs about mental illness. Also, results showed a small but significant negative correlation between intrinsic religiosity and belief about mental illness, a significant positive correlation between extrinsic religiosity and belief about mental illness, and weak but significant negative correlation between intrinsic religiosity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Finally, hierarchical regression analysis showed a weak but significant predictor model with religious orientation and belief about mental illness as valid predictors of attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. In the final chapter, results are discussed along with study limitations. Implications for practice and future research are presented.
