Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a theory based physical education intervention on the leisure-time physical activity of adolescents with visual impairments. Six adolescents with visual impairments attending a Midwestern residential school for the blind served as participants. The study implemented a multiple baseline across participants single subject design and physical activity behavior was measured by steps taken through the use of Fitbit Zips. In addition to physical activity, questionnaires were used to collect data (i.e., change scores) on selected social cognitive theory constructs. Data were analyzed through visual analysis and descriptive statistics. Results of the multiple baseline design did not demonstrate a functional relation between the number of steps taken and the intervention. These results may have been directly influenced from several limitations of the study, such as seasonality (i.e., the program took place in the winter time where limited leisure-time physical activity opportunities were available) and the truncation of the program for Participants 4, 5, and 6. Because of these limitations, the results may not represent the full effectiveness of the intervention for individuals with visual impairments. With the lack of physical activity intervention research related to adolescent-aged individuals with visual impairments (Haegele & Porretta, 2015), and the influence physical activity has on health-related outcomes (e.g., obesity), further research is needed.

The study implemented a range bound changing criterion design and physical activity behavior was measured through the use of ActiGraph GT1M accelerometers. In addition to physical activity, questionnaires were used to collect data (i.e., change score) on selected social cognitive theory constructs. Data were analyzed through visual analysis and descriptive statistics. Results showed that the intervention exerted functional control over the target behavior (i.e., time spent in a bout of leisure time physical activity). In addition, changes in time spent in total leisure time physical activity suggest that the intervention had positive effects on participants' physical activity behavior. Similarly, changes in scores for selected social cognitive constructs, in particular for outcome expectancy value, may suggest a positive relationship between those constructs and physical activity behavior. With the paucity of physical activity research among youth with visual impairments and the continuous national efforts to promote physical activity among children and adolescents with disabilities, additional physical activity intervention research is warranted.

Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. Childhood obesity has more than doubled since 1990, and the health consequences are reflected in the rising cost of health care. There has also been a significant drop in physical activity across the country and physical education is no longer required in middle schools. The lack of physical activity and issues of weight can compromise the ability of the individual who is blind or visually impaired to maneuver through the environment safely and efficiently. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of itinerant teachers of students with visual impairments about the importance of physical activity for their students with visual impairments and its effect on academic success and social relationship. Data was gathered from 175 teachers of students with visual impairments concerning their perceptions regarding the importance of physical activity and obesity and their relationship with academic success and social relationships. The teachers indicated that physical activity for their students is very important. They described a multitude of barriers that account for a lack of involvement in the general physical education classes in which they were enrolled. Teachers reported on their own personal physical activity levels in relationship to the importance they placed on their students' need to be active. The teachers did not indicate that being overweight was a particular issue with their visually impaired students, but they acknowledged that being overweight and a lack of physical activity create additional barriers for academic success and appropriate social relationships. The teachers also reported that the same barriers in physical education classes and access to recreation activities in the community that have been listed in past research studies were still in existence, and these barriers were also part of their dilemma in creating positive physical activity experiences for their students who are visually impaired. This study validated the necessity of further research to find the effective intervention strategies and programs to increase physical activity of students with visual impairments.

Book excerpt: Background: Childhood obesity accompanied by low health-related physical fitness (HRPF) is a major threat to public health, both internationally and locally. Children with intellectual disability (ID), especially adolescents, have a high risk of being overweight or obese and of having poor HRPF. More interventions, therefore, are needed to help this population attain their optimal health levels. However, few studies have examined this population, in contrast to the numerous studies designed for their typically developing (TD) peers. The purpose of this study was to design a physical activity (PA) intervention for this under-researched population and to evaluate its effectiveness on obesity-related outcomes (primary), HRPF outcomes (primary), and blood pressure (secondary) as well as its sustained effects. Methods: First, a systematic review and a meta-analysis of lifestyle intervention studies on obesity and HRPF were conducted to identify effective intervention strategies for the target population and to provide evidence for designing the PA programme. Three databases were systematically searched for studies published until May 2020. The random effects model was used to pool the weighted results with inverse variance methods, and the I2 statistic was applied to assess heterogeneity among the included studies. Second, a school-based randomised controlled trial (RCT) was implemented for 12 weeks. Participants (N = 30) aged 12–18 years were recruited and randomly allocated to either the intervention group (IG) or the waitlist control group (CG). The participants in the IG received a fun game–based moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) training program (2 sessions/week, 60 minutes/session, for a total of 24 sessions). The intensity of the activities increased in a progressive manner. Participants in the CG received no treatment during the 12-week intervention period. All participants were followed up for 12 weeks afterwards to evaluate the sustaining effects of the intervention. Study outcomes included primary outcomes (obesity- and fitness-related outcomes) and a secondary outcome (blood pressure). All measurements were repeatedly taken at baseline, after intervention, and after follow-up. Analysis of variance for repeated measures was applied to detect within-group differences in the measured outcomes across three time points, whereas analysis of covariance was performed to evaluate the between-group differences. Results: The systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that PA was the predominant intervention component, as it was adopted in 27 of the 29 examined studies. The three papers are independent studies, yet build upon each other by first measuring physical performance in certain skills, then exploring their levels of self-perception, body mass index, and level of physical activity in their local communities, and finally describing the population of participants at various points over a 25-year period. Papers one and two examined differences in pre and post camp measures for first time and repeat participants, with the first paper focusing on physical performance, and the second paper looking at self-perception, level of physical activity in participant's local communities, and body mass index. Papers one and two also compared the state with the largest number of participants to the total number of participants from all other states. Paper three provides an examination of selected characteristics of those who attended various Sports Education Camps for the first time compared to those who repeated attendance, and also made comparisons of the 12 states where data were available. Results from the first study indicate that first time attendees demonstrated significant improvement between pre and post camp measures of physical performance in three of the four skills being measured (over and under arm throw, and standing long jump). The second study revealed similar results for first time attendees, who demonstrated significant growth in their positive attitudes of themselves between pre and post camp measures in three out of four areas of self-perception. Results from the third paper indicate that participants of Sports Education Camps are representative of national datasets for gender and level of vision in that the majority were males with low vision. The level of Caucasian participants attending Sports Education Camps in this study, however, was overrepresented in our sample. Implications of the effectiveness of the Sports Education Camp model for teaching basic body mechanics and sports skills in increasing physical performance and self-perception of students with vision impairments are discussed.
