Book excerpt: Abstract: The current investigation evaluated the effects of a self-management package, which included self-evaluation and self-reinforcement procedures, on the completion and accuracy of independent academic seatwork. Three participants diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities were taught self-management skills using a least-to- most prompting procedure following baseline using a multiple-probe baseline across subjects design. Following acquisition of the self-management package, prompts were removed and generalization probes were conducted in untrained settings and with untrained tasks. Results suggested that the self-management skills of self-evaluation and self-reinforcement can be taught to students with developmental disabilities and that those skills can maintain and generalize to other independent seatwork tasks and untrained educational settings. Results are discussed in terms of collateral effects of the self-management package on completion and accuracy of academic and the generalizability of self-management skills.

Book excerpt: This study employed a multiple baseline across participants design to investigate the effect of a self-monitoring treatment intervention package (independent variable) consisting of a wristwatch that delivers timed vibrating and digital text prompts, a self-recording form, and a performance graphing worksheet, on the ability of three high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to self-monitor the academic productivity component behaviors (dependent variable) of homework assignment completion and submission rates, classroom-based work completion and submission rates, and accuracy and rate of documentation of academic tasks in their student planners. Students earned academic productivity composite scores reflecting the percentage of academic productivity behavior they demonstrated in their target classroom each day. All participants achieved marked improvements in their academic productivity composite scores from baseline to intervention to the maintenance phase. A detailed analysis of the study results, implications for clinical practice, limitations of the current investigation and recommendations for future research completes this investigation.

The pedagogy is based on decades of research on strategy instruction as well as on a theory of learning that claims these four conditions promote self-determined learning in all learners: (1) opportunities to choose expectations for gaining something from a learning challenge, (2) strategies that regulate responses to meet those expectations, (3) comparisons between results and expectations that provoke additional adjustment in expectations and responses, and (4) persistent engagement and adjustment until results match expectations. The pedagogy of self-instruction described in this book anchors these conditions in everyday instruction so students can learn by adjusting to their own expectations. Chapter 1 compares this approach to the teacher-directed methods of direct instruction that require teachers to set expectations for students, control how students respond to them, evaluate the outcomes they produce, and then prescribe adjustments students must make to improve. Chapter 2 provides evidence that too much of special education instruction reflects this teacher-directed approach and as a consequence discourages students from learning how to learn on their own. Chapters 3-6 identify four ways to shift learning control from teachers to students and Chapters 7 and 8 identify the obstacles to achieving this instructional shift in special education. The appendices of the book provide a bibliography of research on self-instruction and direct instruction pedagogies and a validated self-assessment that can evaluate the directedness of your teaching.
