Book excerpt: This study examined the singular and combined effects of a progressive relaxation and biofeedback monitoring program upon Trait Anxiety, Sports Competition Anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension as measured by EMG readings. The programs were administered over a six-week sequence, with pre-measures utilizing the Spielberger Trait Anxiety measure, the Sports Competition Anxiety Test, and Rotter's Locus of Control Test to evaluate the psychological parameters. In addition, blood pressure and resting heart rate data were collected one hour prior to three competitive duo meets and prior to "warm-up". EMG monitoring by biofeedback was accomplished through use of the Autogen 1100 Myograph at a band pass setting of 100 to 200 Hz. EMG measures were made by use of the Autogen 5100 Digital Integrator using time-averaged performance of each subject. These measures were independent of the analysis feedback. All pre-measures were gathered prior to the various treatment strategies. The subjects were 36 male collegiate varsity track and field athletes divided into one of four treatment cells containing nine subjects each. Each group met for a total of twelve one-half hour sessions and participated in either a cassette-taped Quieting Response program, a Quieting Response program with augmented EMG biofeedback, or EMG biofeedback alone. The control group was administered the assessment items and blood pressure and resting heart rate measures to include EMG time-averaging monitoring. In lieu of treatment, the control group attended twelve one-half hour sessions of passive rest and listened to "music of choice" during these sessions. Statistical analysis using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that EMG measures were significantly reduced through the six weeks of training using relaxation training alone, biofeedback training, and combined relaxation/biofeedback training. There were no differences as a result of treatment effect for the variables for between group significance for any of the variables to include Trait Anxiety, Sports Competition Anxiety, Locus of Control, blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Book excerpt: This study employed a randomized control repeated measures design to determine the effectiveness of a 2-week paced breathing intervention in reducing anxiety symptoms. I randomly assigned 35 healthy college students into the paced breathing group (n = 17) and the control group (n = 18). Participants completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and baseline heart rate variability (HRV) during Session-1 and Session-2. Participants in the paced breathing group were trained using HRV biofeedback training (HRV-BT) during both sessions and then practiced at home using a free smartphone application. At baseline, both groups had similar State Anxiety (S-Anxiety) scores and HRV, evidenced by the outcome standard deviation of the NN intervals (SDNN; a measure of HRV). Within-group analyses demonstrated a significant reduction in S-Anxiety for the paced breathing group during Session-1 (Time-1 vs. Time-2) and Session-2 (Time-3 vs. Time-4), p = 0.02 and p [less-than] 0.001, respectively; however, the control group did not. Between-group analyses comparing the paced breathing and control group at baseline (Time-1) to Session-2 (Time-3) did not reveal a significant S-Anxiety reduction; similarly, between-group changes for SDNN were not significant. Lastly, a moderated mediation model explored if the changes in S-Anxiety over time were influenced by participants' Trait Anxiety (T-Anxiety) scores at Time-1 for the participants randomly assigned to the paced breathing or control group. However, the results did not support the overall moderated mediation model using the index of moderated mediation. However, I found that participants with higher levels of T-anxiety at baseline had higher S-Anxiety after the 2-week intervention. In conclusion, the HRV-BT and paced breathing at home for 2 weeks participants significantly reduced short-term anxiety, but the long-term effects were not significant. Furthermore, interventions such as HRV-BT or paced breathing may be an effective coping mechanism for college students to reduce short-term anxiety symptoms.

Book excerpt: "Introduction: Anxiety affects nearly 20% of the United States population and can have a significant impact on athletic performance. However, athletes can mitigate the effects of performance anxiety through the use of mental skills and mindfulness training. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine if a mental training and mindfulness intervention could reduce anxiety and enhance performance in distance runners. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of the study was that athletes would experience less anxiety, increased levels of mindfulness, and improved performance following a four-workshop intervention. Methods: Distance runners engaged in a mental skills and mindfulness training program where we measured pre, during and post-anxiety levels. Anxiety was measured on the Competitive State Anxiety Scale-2 (CSAI-2) with modifications to the scale to measure intensity of cognitive and somatic anxiety, and self-confidence, and mindfulness was measured with the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). In addition, running performance and effort was measured pre, during and post intervention. Analysis: Means and standard deviations were calculated to investigate variable-level differences. In addition, to investigate participant-level effects, we created individual athlete narratives. Results: Overall, scores for cognitive and somatic anxiety for all three athletes were below the midpoint of the scale indicating that the athletes in general had low levels of both types of anxiety. Mindfulness scores stayed relatively consistent during the program. Discussion: Changes in anxiety varied depending on individual athletes while changes in mindfulness were minor for all participants. These relatively small changes highlight that duration of the intervention may play a role in how effective an MST and Mindfulness program may be for athletes and future studies should aim to extend the duration of the intervention for both MST and Mindfulness past 4-weeks."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.
