Since 1972, Title IX on college campuses has legally mandated access for both sexes to all academic offerings and expanded athletics offerings for women; most recently, Title IX protection has expanded to include sexual misconduct. While the scope of Title IX is broad, the purpose of this research was to study NCAA Division III student athletes’ perceptions of Title IX generating useful understandings to guide key stakeholder’s future decisions. Previously conducted Title IX research focused primarily on NCAA Division I institutions and I could find no study from the lens of student athletes. The lack of empirical evidence quantifying student athletes’ perceptions of Title IX as well as no study primary focusing on Title IX at NCAA Division III campuses are problematic when evaluating Title IX effectiveness. This research surveyed NCAA Division III student athletes in Wisconsin focusing on possible differences in Title IX perceptions between the sexes, student athletes participating on higher- verses lower-expense sports, and among all years of participation. Pierre Bourdieu’s social reproduction theory served as the theoretical lens for examination of the quantitative results to the primary research questions.

Almost no attention, however, has been given to the way that the National Collegiate Athletic Association has embraced professionalism through its athletic scholarship policy. Because of this gap in the historical record, the NCAA is often cast as an embattled defender of amateurism, rather than as the architect of a nationwide money-laundering scheme. Sack and Staurowsky show that the NCAA formally abandoned amateurism in the 1950s and passed rules in subsequent years that literally transformed scholarship athletes into university employees. In addition, by purposefully fashioning an amateur mythology to mask the reality of this employer-employee relationship, the NCAA has done a disservice to student-athletes and to higher education. A major subtheme is that women, such as those who created the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), opposed this hypocrisy, but lacked the power to sustain an alternative model. After tracing the evolution of college athletes into professional entertainers, and the harmful effects it has caused, the authors propose an alternative approach that places college sport on a firm educational foundation and defend the rights of both male and female college athletes. This is a provocative analysis for anyone interested in college sports in America and its subversion of traditional educational and amateur principles.

In higher education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the misapplication of Title IX in college athletics is believed to have caused the termination of college wrestling programs that were otherwise successful programs. A review of the literature suggests an absence of research on Title IX and men's varsity wrestling. This novel study included the perceptions of wrestling coaches and athletic administrators on Title IX in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which is nationally known for its participation in the sport of wrestling. A quantitative approach was selected because it afforded the opportunity to include a greater number of subjects than a qualitative study, and the opportunity to generalize the results to other states. The descriptive survey approach allowed subjects to respond to questions administered through an online survey, using the SurveyMonkey® platform and a new instrument called the Title IX Inventory (TIXI). The subjects for this study included college wrestling coaches, institution presidents, and athletic administrators. The data from 49 electronic SurveyMonkey® surveys completed by participants were analyzed. Findings from Pearson correlations revealed that coaches with more years of experience with wrestling are more negative in their perceptions of the impact of Title IX. A one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests showed that athletic administrators have a consistently more supportive attitude about the impact of Title IX. Suggestions for future research include studies on institutional presidents' perceptions; college athletes' perceptions; and various forms of Title IX compliance pursued by U.S. colleges and universities, specifically as it is applied to varsity athletics.

Book excerpt: Eighteen years after the passing of Title IX, gender equity continues to emerge as a serious issue for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Colleges and universities comply with Title IX by using the three-prong test, including 1) proportionality, 2) continuing history and expansion, and 3) interests and abilities. Using the University of Akron as a case study, the purpose of this research was to examine university compliance in relation to the three-prong test, to explore compliance in terms of the interests and abilities of students, and to measure the impact of Title IX for women of color. We argue that, in an attempt to comply with Title IX, colleges and universities traditionally add sport programs that are historically dominated by white women and systematically limit access and opportunities for women of color interested in sports. An exploratory study was conducted at the University of Akron during the fall 2006 semester. The research population consisted of Akron students, ages 18 thru 25. Using the Assessment of Students Interests and Abilities developed by the National Center for Education Statistics to assess Title IX compliance, this study relied on a web-based survey to assess interests and abilities of the 3,219 students who responded. In addition to demographics, variables of interest included high school sports experience, current intercollegiate participation, interest in future participation, and sport ability. Using chi-square to identify the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, the results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between race and lack of participation among women. The data suggests that when compared to white female students, women of color do not participate in sports at the college level because they lack the time, have to work, and they view sports as being too competitive. Using logistic regression, we examined whether participation in college sports was dependent on high school sport participation at the varsity level, controlling for gender and race. We found that students who participate in high school sports are 10 times more likely to participate in sports at the college level. These results suggested that to ensure that women of color have an equal opportunity to participate in sports, grooming for a wide array of sports must occur early in the educational process. Colleges and universities can improve access and opportunities for students of color and women, specifically, if they create partnerships with elementary and secondary institutions to develop sport abilities for students. In addition we show that there is a significant relationship between high school sport participation and men of color and there is a significant relationship between interest in high school sport participation, current participation, future participation, interests and abilities, and race and gender. A significant relationship was found in five sports when comparing women of color to white women. It was found that women of color were more likely to want to participate in outdoor track and field and basketball. White women were more likely to want to participate in softball, soccer, and swimming and diving.
