Book Synopsis Containing the Atom by : J. Samuel Walker
Download or read book Containing the Atom written by J. Samuel Walker and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late 1960s saw an extraordinary growth in the American nuclear industry: dozens of plants of unprecedented size were ordered throughout the country. Yet at the same time, public concern about the natural environment and suspicion of both government and industry increased dramatically. Containing the Atom is the first scholarly history of nuclear power regulation during those tumultuous years. J. Samuel Walker focuses on the activities of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the agency entrusted with the primary responsibility for the safety of nuclear power, and shows that from the beginning the AEC faced a paradox: it was charged with both promoting and controlling the nuclear power industry. Out of this paradox grew severe tensions, which Walker discusses in detail. His balanced evaluation of the issues and the positions taken by the AEC and others makes this study an invaluable resource for all those interested in the continuing controversies that surround nuclear energy. Book Synopsis Heated Discharge Control and Management Alternatives by : James MacLaren Company
Download or read book Heated Discharge Control and Management Alternatives written by James MacLaren Company and published by ottawa : Department of supply and services. This book was released on 1977 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic concepts of waste heat management on shallow and deep small water bodies and rivers are reviewed and examples are given. This study defines a small water body as a body in which the far field hydrothermal effects of a heated discharge can be detected in a major portion or practically all of the water body. Environmental effects due to warming of a small natural water body are consequently not limited to the immediate area of the outfall. The report divides small water bodies into three categories: rivers, nonstratified water bodies, and stratified water bodies. Management and control alternatives for each category are discussed, as well as the biological effects of various cooling systems, and methods for prediction and thermal modelling. Emphasis is placed on the significance of site-specific variations and the necessity for consideration of all alternatives before selection of a cooling system for a particular site.
