However, teacher-training programs often fail to provide pre-service teachers with the knowledge base and experience necessary to implement these strategies. Training options exist for in-service teachers to acquire these skills; however, they often require a level of time on the part of the trainer and trainee that may not be available in schools. A more time efficient training solution may be video modeling plus a brief self-monitoring intervention. This study investigated the use of video modeling plus self-monitoring to train teachers to use specific praise as a classroom management strategy. A multiple-baseline design across three teacher participants was utilized to evaluate improvements in teacher behavior. Data were also collected on student outcomes (i.e., academic engagement and disruptive behavior). Results indicate that the intervention increased the use of specific praise in two of the three teacher participants; results did not indicate improvement in student outcomes (i.e., academic engagement and disruptive behavior). Limitations, directions for future research, and implications for practice and research are also presented.

However, many teachers begin their careers lacking the expertise required to run a classroom to maximize the potential for student academic success. With the addition of legislation such as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004, teachers have become increasingly accountable for the academic achievement of their students. Numerous studies have found a direct link between effective classroom management skills and higher academic achievement of students (Oliver & Reschly, 2007; Gresham, 2009; Wenglinsky, 2002; Strong, Ward & Grant, 2011). Teacher praise for appropriate student behavior has been proven to be an effective classroom management strategy (Villeda, Shuster, & Carter, 2016). The current study examined the effect of two types of consultation (i.e., consultation only and consultation with performance feedback) on increasing teachers skill levels in the use of behavior specific praise in an effort to decrease student disruptions in the classroom. A multiple baseline A/B/B+C/ Follow-up design was used to determine the effectiveness of the two consultation methods. Results indicated that both consultation methods increased the teachers praise to correction ratios and reduced the frequency of students disruptive behavior. Implications of the study and future directions are discussed.

This study, conducted in Saudi Arabia, aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the video self-modeling intervention on decreasing inappropriate behaviors and increasing appropriate behaviors of four elementary students with behavioral challenges. It also aimed to explore teachers' perspectives about the video self-modeling intervention. The teachers were interviewed about the most prevalent problem behaviors demonstrated by their students with challenging behaviors, the most frequently used methods to address those problem behaviors, and their preparation and training for teaching and working with students with challenging behaviors. The results of the study suggest that the video self-modeling intervention had a positive and substantial influence on decreasing inappropriate behaviors and increasing appropriate behaviors of the students. The improvement continued in the maintenance phase for all participants even when they were no longer receiving the video self-modeling intervention. All teachers held positive attitudes about the video self-modeling intervention. Teachers varied in reporting the most prevalent problem behaviors that were demonstrated by students with challenging behaviors. Teachers reported several methods and strategies that they used most frequently to address students' behavioral challenges, such as positive reinforcement, praise, timeout, and ignoring their inappropriate behaviors. The teachers in the current study reported several professional development programs that are provided by the Ministry of Education in training centers in the main cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher administered behavior-specific praise on promoting positive behavior in students, as demonstrated by exhibiting on-task behavior and decreasing negative behaviors, in addition to examining the feasibility of delivering it at 1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute intervals in three different general or special education classrooms. An elementary school was selected for the site of the study. Three students served as primary participants, and three teachers (i.e., two general education and one special education teacher) served as secondary participants. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to assess the overall effects of the intervention. Results indicated that teacher administered behavior-specific praise is an effective, easy to use evidence-based practice which can be used by teachers for the purpose of promoting positive academic and social behavior in students, including those who have been and are at risk for being identified as having a disability.

Researchers also examined whether increasing BSP use affected the rate of corrective statement use. Results provide preliminary evidence that a tactile prompt paired with a visual prompt is more effective than a visual prompt alone for increasing BSP use.

It also evaluated if changes in class-wide behaviors are maintained during follow-up and generalized to non-target academic periods. Data on teacher use of BSPS were also collected during follow-up and generalization probes to examine if the teachers continued to use BSPS during follow-up and generalize their use of BSPS to non-target academic periods. A multiple-baseline design across classrooms with an ABC sequence was used to evaluate the outcomes of the interventions. The results indicated that BSPS was sufficient in two classrooms to increase class-wide on-task behavior for over 90% of students just by explicitly giving attention for appropriate behaviors while the third classroom required implementation of CBGG which provided external reinforcers. Some evidence of generalization and maintenance was observed in all classrooms. All teaching staff's use of BSPS increased during implementation of the BSPS phase, but BSPS use decreased in follow-up, and support for generalization is lacking.

It is not only important for staff to use praise but to also specify the behavior for which the praise is being given. Increasing behavior specific praise in different educational settings was the aim of this current study. Two settings were observed in which a MotivAider tactile prompting device was worn. This device prompted the teacher and one instructional assistant to provide behavior specific praise once every minute during a 10 minute session. The researcher recorded the frequency of behavior specific praise, non-behavior specific praise and corrective statements delivered to students by each participant. It was discovered that using the MotivAider increased the amount of behavior specific praise delivered by all staff members whilst they were receiving the prompt themselves. It was also demonstrated that some participants reacted to the other participant's increased frequency of praise, in that setting, when they themselves were not receiving the tactile prompt. A third finding was that an increase in the frequency of praise statements did not result in a decrease in the frequency of corrective statements.

Very few studies have addressed the impact of video modeling on behaviors that are displayed by groups of students and no studies have tackled the issue of group behaviors with video self-modeling as an intervention. This study focused on analyzing the effects of video self-modeling on students in an elementary classroom in order to increase the speed at which the students lined up and transitioned. Further, the study addressed the question of whether the intervention had a differential impact on students who exhibited varying speeds of transitioning, by grouping them into fast, medium or slow groups determined during baseline. The study employed a single-subject research design but employed groups, rather than individuals as the subjects. The results revealed that the entire class showed immediate and significant gains in the speed at which they lined up and transitioned. The results also showed that both the medium and slow groups gained enough speed by using this intervention that the groups transitioned and lined up with similar speeds as the fast group. Implications of this study showed that group video self-modeling may be an intervention that can be used to positively influence global behavior change in the regular education classroom. This intervention may be a valuable asset for educators to improve classroom management by efficiently improving student behavior, and may assist them to increase the fidelity of student responses when teaching positive classroom behaviors to students.

Research indicates that compliance, or following directions, is a keystone behavior, which, if learned, may significantly decrease the occurrence of behavior difficulties in students. Many studies of individuals with disabilities have shown a dramatic increase across a wide range of academic and social skills using video self-modeling (VSM), a technique in which students watch edited videos of themselves performing skills correctly or at high rates. Despite the importance of compliance for individuals with disabilities and the success of video self-modeling, little research has been done regarding the effect of VSM on compliance. In addition, VSM has been used mainly with elementary school-age students. This multiple baseline study examined the effect of video self-modeling on the rates of compliance in three high school-age students with developmental disabilities. Participants[alpha] compliancy rates increased after implementing video self-modeling. Mean latency to compliance also decreased for all participants. Study results indicate that video self-modeling may be an effective method for increasing compliance and decreasing compliance latency in high school students with developmental disabilities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of video self-modeling (VSM) with early elementary-aged children who have not been evaluated as having a disability entitling them to special education services, but who have been identified by their teachers as exhibiting aggressive behavior within the school setting and were “at-risk” for experiencing educational difficulties due to behavior. Eight students from two elementary schools received the VSM intervention and their data were analyzed as part of this study. Teachers and parents completed the BRIEF and SSIS, and students were observed at baseline and after the intervention. Half of all observations were conducted with two raters in order to assess inter-rater reliability. Primary analyses of observational data included visual analysis of level, variability, and trend, as well as statistical analysis using two nonparametric techniques (i.e., NAP and Tau-U) and one parametric technique (i.e., Allison-MT regression). Analysis of clinical and nominally significant changes on the BRIEF and the SSIS were conducted by obtaining the reliable change index (RCI). The findings of this study indicated that VSM is a viable intervention for addressing aggressive behavior among at-risk elementary-aged students. Improvements in behavior were observed for seven out of eight participants, particularly among participants who displayed more aggression at baseline. Teachers also reported clinically significant changes in behavior for some participants on the BRIEF and the Problem Behaviors scale on the SSIS; however, the VSM intervention did not affect parent ratings on those same scales nor did it affect the Social Skills scale on the SSIS, which may reflect the items comprising those scales. These findings demonstrate that school psychologists can use VSM as a secondary prevention tool in working with students who display aggressive behaviors; however, it is recommended that school psychologists are cognizant of the methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of VSM among at-risk students, who may not display significant behavioral deficits.
