Book excerpt: This comprehensive book takes the reader through the necessary steps to develop user buy-in and assistance in creating a learner-driven library program. The result? A unique, exemplary school library program that is eligible for national awards. Creating an award-winning school library program involves more than simply following the guidelines and standards available that describe what an exemplary program should accomplish. Effecting the changes necessary is often a process that presents multiple challenges along the way—especially when there is insufficient buy-in to the changes. This updated second edition of Seven Steps to An Award Winning School Library Program begins with a description of an existing model school library program and then describes steps that emphasize how to develop user buy-in and assistance in achieving the results of a learner-driven library program. In addition to providing descriptions of detailed actions to perform, advice on working with staff, and background information on change theory, this book also includes practical documents, diagrams, processes, workshop ideas, lesson plans, and tips when filling out applications for awards.

Book excerpt: This book illuminates school librarian and teacher librarian education and training in light of the 2015 IFLA School Library Guidelines, second edition. The Guidelines provide a framework for effective service delivery to ensure that students and teachers have access to quality library services delivered by qualified librarians and information professionals. The book focuses on moving professional practice forward, translating the Guidelines into actions ensuring effective education and training and improved practice. The book highlights issues and concerns related to school librarian and teacher librarian education and training. What attitudes, skills and knowledge are required to inspire students and support teaching and learning effectively? What curriculum content is required? How are field and practical experiences integrated appropriately into face-to-face and online educational and training programmes? How are leadership skills developed effectively? Case studies and innovative educational and training programmes from around the world illustrate the diverse ways of preparing librarians for the roles identified in the Guidelines. Topics covered include: delivering school librarian credentialled programmes; improving school librarian services; providing professional development; preparing and delivering educational and/or cultural programmes and services; managing human resources; collection development of digital and print resources; innovative aspects of technology use; promotion and advocacy; and evaluation and assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research ascertained perceptions of pupils regarding the factors contributing to effective secondary school libraries and considered how far their opinions can be allied to the recommendations of published national guidelines when framing a library policy. A literature search revealed little relevant research on school library evaluation. Most projects concentrated on managers' point of view rather than highlighting pupils' contribution to policy development. Guidelines published by the Library Association, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum were studied for information on research bases and on suggestions for pupil input but it was found that neither aspect was given significant emphasis. There was little guidance on appropriate methodology in the documents dealing with school libraries. Higher education projects yielded more helpful information and it was decided to use the Multiple Constituencies/Stakeholder method which was already tested in New Zealand and the UK. A qualitative approach, this incorporates some quantitative methods which are used to indicate customers' preferences. Themes relevant to pupils' interests were identified by studying the published Standards and Guidelines and by individual interviews and discussion groups in six East Renfrewshire schools. 241 pupils completed a questionnaire consisting of 37 statements, each being rated on a scale of one to seven. The resulting data yielded information on preferences, from which factors important to pupils were extrapolated, including a comparison of views of younger and older pupils and of boys and girls. Many of the Guidelines' recommendations were acceptable to pupils but issues relating to the teaching of information skills, reading promotion and pupil involvement in library administration were less appropriate. The value of the project for school and library management, school inspection, future evaluation of the Standards and Guidelines was assessed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of enlightening and stimulating articles, written by some of the most important figures in school librarianship, demonstrates how teacher-librarians, classroom teachers, and administrators can work together to create a 21st century school library media program. With topics that emphasize student success, leadership, partnerships, curriculum design, collaborative planning and teaching, literacy, 21st century skills, emerging technologies, and so much more, this compendium brings together the best of the best discussions. The practicing teacher-librarian, as well as the student seeking to expand his or her knowledge of the field, will find this compilation especially beneficial in providing an overview of the most critical issues related to the role the teacher-librarian plays in their school. The articles, previously published in the peer-reviewed Teacher Librarian: The Journal for School Library Professionals with several included from the magazine VOYA: Voice of Youth Advocates, reveal how school libraries and teacher-librarians are moving forward to meet the challenges of this new century.
