Book excerpt: The primary objective of this investigation was to offer a marriage enrichment workshop enabling the participants to increase their communication and problem solving skills, and the prevention of future marital distress through an educational experience. Marital communication and marital adjustment scores were obtained from an experimental group consisting of 16 married Indian couples living in the United States who attended a marriage enrichment workshop. These scores were compared with those scores derived from 16 married Indian couples living in the United States who participated in a marriage enrichment workshop at a later date. Nineteen hypotheses were generated which assumed that couples participating in a marriage enrichment workshop would experience a significant increase in their level of marital communication and marital adjustment. The five-session workshop was conducted on five consecutive Saturdays, the duration of each session being three hours. The format for the workshop included the exercises designed by Hendrix (1988) to improve communication skills and practice new relationship skills. The importance of creating a more loving and supportive relationship was emphasized in the workshop. The instruments used to study the dependent variables were the Marital Communication Inventory and the Marital Adjustment Test. The statistical treatment applied was Analysis Of Variance with repeated measures. Subjects were tested on the first day of the workshop, the last day of the workshop, and finally five weeks after the marriage enrichment workshop. The results indicated that the marriage enrichment workshop had moderately significant positive effect on marital communication and marital adjustment. The level of communication and adjustment showed consistent statistically significant increase over time (five week delay) after the workshop. In addition, the results established positive correlation between marital communication and marital adjustment. Finally, the content of the workshop designed by Hendrix (1988) was much appreciated by all participants and they identified remarkable similarity between the the Western thought and the Eastern culture.

Frousakis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marital enrichment programs have been gaining considerable recognition in the past several decades. Thousands of individuals participate in these programs yearly. However, the particular effects of enrichment programs are still under investigation, and many remain empirically unanalyzed and their effectiveness undetermined. Also, many dyadic interventions focus on helping couples improve their communication skills and become more socially supportive of their partner. This study explored changes in levels of perceived social support, constructive communication, and marital satisfaction in couples participating in a marital enrichment program, Marriage Alive. Couples who completed all 3 phases of the study (i.e., pre-seminar, post-seminar, 2 month follow-up) were included in these analyses. Results indicated that levels of support, communication, and satisfaction increased by the end of the enrichment seminar for husbands and wives. However, only gains in communication were fully maintained at follow-up. The finding of sustained improvements in communication skills has far-reaching implications, which will be discussed here. This study also explored whether changes in social support from pre-seminar to follow-up mediate the relationship between changes in constructive communication and changes in marital satisfaction; however, this model was not supported. Implications and future directions for the specific seminar under investigation are also discussed.

Download or read book The Effect of Communication on Couples' Relationship and Happiness written by Tamila Mostamandy and published by . This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined relationships between married couples and couples' communication patterns and theories on interpersonal communication. One hundred seventy-eight students from Washington, DC, metropolitan campuses of Strayer University participated in the study. Couples Pre-Counseling Inventory, a validated instrument, was used to examine the participants' communication patterns; results were analyzed using SPSS. Variables studied were demographic data, communication patterns, happiness, satisfaction in the couple relationship, and several indices of personal life. Significant differences were found linking communication patterns to general and specific happiness; to satisfaction with the marital relationship; and to management of personal life. In addition, the study revealed significant differences between men and women in the sample, with women less satisfied than men on several variables. The findings thus indicate that the variables studied are related, in a complex manner, to the nature and quality of communication as a factor in many aspects of marriage and family life. The study open the door for future research considering other variables, such as ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic status.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationship enrichment programs serve to promote the development of healthy intimate relationships (Halford, Markman, Kling, & Stanley, 2003). There are hundreds of relationship enrichment programs available in the United States, alone (smartmarriages.com, 2013). Weekend to Remember is a faith-based relationship enrichment program which has not yet been the subject of empirical evaluation. This is not unusual. A select few of these types of interventions have received research attention, and little of this research has been published in peer reviewed journals. This study aims to contribute to this small body of existing literature by examining the effectiveness of the Weekend to Remember program on couples' relationship satisfaction, communication, conflict resolution, and forgiveness. Maintenance of these changes, and the influences of gender, length of marriage, and level of religiosity on the study variables were also examined. The relationship between forgiveness and conflict resolution was also of interest. This was measured through pre, post, and follow-up assessment of couples, using comparisons between a wait list control group and treatment group. Participants included 49 straight couples. The present study used a longitudinal and correlational design to observe changes in participants after engaging in the Weekend to Remember relationship enrichment program. Analyses involved repeated measurement of the same subjects compared to a wait list control group at two (two surveys administered one month apart before attending Weekend to Remember) and three (pre, post, and follow-up assessment) time points. Analyses also examined the relationship between demographic and study variables. Both the couple and individuals were the units of analysis. Results indicated that participation in Weekend to Remember increased healthy conflict resolution and this gain was maintained at eight week follow-up. Results did not support an increase or maintenance of relationship satisfaction or forgiveness. Over time, communication did significantly improve, and this gain was maintained. Relationship satisfaction upon entering the intervention, gender, length of relationship, and religiosity were not found to predict significant differences in the study variables. Conflict resolution and forgiveness significantly correlated with one another at pre and follow-up, but not at post assessment.

Book Synopsis The Effects of a Home-Based, Audio Cassettee Marriage Enrichment Course on Marital Communication and Marital Adjustment by : Larry D. Anderson

This book was released on 1984 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of a home-based, audio cassette marriage enrichment course on marital communication and marital adjustment. The marriage enrichment course evaluated in this study consisted of two audio cassette tapes, each containing two sessions of approximately 45 minutes in length, and one work booklet. The course contained exercises emphasizing the development of communication skills, encouragement of self-disclosure, learning of empathy skills, and the setting of personal and mutual goals. The unique aspects of the course were the home-based setting in which the couples completed the program, and the self-enclosed audio cassette nature of the course. The subjects consisted of 24 Protestant, married couples residing in a medium sized western United States city. A pretest, posttest control group experimental design with a one month follow-up was formulated consisting of one experimental group and a no-treatment control group. Twelve hypotheses were generated predicting that the subjects who participated in the audio cassette course would experience a significant increase in their level of marital communication and marital adjustment at the posttest and at a one month follow-up test. The dependent variables were the scores on the Marital Communication Inventory (Bienvenu, 1969), and the Locke-Wallace Short Form Marital Adjustment Test (Locke & Wallace, 1959). Analysis of Covariance was used to evaluate the data with the pretest serving as the covariate in each analysis. The results of the study indicated that the experimental group, relative to the control group, made no significant changes in the directions hypothesized as a result of participation in the audio cassette marriage enrichment course. The medium used to present the marriage enrichment course, the quantity of material presented in the course, and the home-based nature of the program were discussed as possible reasons for the failure of the course to effect any significant changes.
