Book excerpt: Most of our knowledge about the acute effects of physical activity on anxiety and mood relies on two, pre- and posttreatment, measurements. This study raises a simple question: Do yoga and aerobic exercise practitioners at a workplace setting report less anxiety and better mood on the days that they practice yoga/aerobic exercise as opposed to the days they do not? The study also explored if there was a difference between the effect of yoga and the effect of aerobic exercise on self reported anxiety and mood. Thirty five yoga practitioners and thirty two aerobic exercise practitioners, all of whom practiced during the workday, completed a set of questionnaires on three consecutive days in which they "worked-out" and at the same time on three other random days in which they did not "work-out." Composite scores for mood and anxiety were calculated for "work-out" days and for "non work-out" days. The dependent variables consisted of state anxiety as measured by the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and revitalization, tranquility, physical exhaustion, and positive engagement as measured by the Exercise Induced Feeling Inventory (EFI). Five separate 2 x 2 univariate mixed design ANOVAS were conducted to test for a significant effect on each of the dependent variables, with "work-out/no work-out" as one half of the matrix, and yoga/aerobic exercise as the other half. However, studies have shown that despite this positive disposition among employers, both employee participation and the impact of such programs remain minimal. According to the Ottawa declaration for health promotion and the Luxembourg declaration for Workplace Health Promotion (WHP), WHP should be strategic. It is recommended that WHP be conducted in a systematic and continuous process of needs analysis, priority setting, planning, implementation and evaluation. Unfortunately, available studies show that many companies have policies currently in place but lack knowledge regarding proper implementation and evaluation. The foregoing phenomenon raises questions regarding the level of knowledge of and attitudes towards WHP among people in management positions. This Research Topic aims to address factors affecting workplace health promotion. - What does WHP mean for employers? - What forms of WHP packages exist? - Is there evaluation and follow up of such interventions? - What are the barriers and facilitators relating to the uptake of WHP interventions among employees? - Do people in relevant managerial positions possess adequate knowledge regarding WHP? Book excerpt: The present study examined the relative effectiveness of aerobic exercise and yoga in reducing depressive symptoms among a female clinical sample. Research has consistently shown that aerobic exercise can reduce symptoms of depression, however, there is little research comparing the anti-depressant effects of different forms of physical activity. A clinical sample of 26 females who had sought treatment for depression were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: an aerobic exercise, yoga, or control condition. Both the aerobic exercise and yoga conditions met for hourly classes twice a week for five weeks. The participants completed the questionnaire package consisting of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), State Trait Anxiety Inventory-State Version (STAI-S), and Depression Coping Self-Efficacy Scale (DCSES) at week one, three, and five. As predicted, results indicated that women in both the aerobic and yoga conditions reported significant reductions in their symptoms of depression and anxiety as compared to women in the control condition. Although women in the aerobic and yoga conditions reported increases in their self-efficacy coping, no significant differences between the exercise and control conditions were evident. Lastly, results of the present study suggest that aerobic activity and yoga are equally effective in their anti-depressant effects.

Abstract: Motivation Impairments of attention and memory are detectable in early psychosis, and often result in severe, longstanding functional impairments. Pharmacological interventions for cognitive impairments have been largely unsuccessful. The current study aims to explore the effects of aerobic exercise and mind-body exercise (yoga) on cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms in female patients with early psychosis. The potential neuromechanism underlying the clinical consequences was also investigated. Methods Female patients (n=120) diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, brief psychosis, psychosis NOS, or delusional disorder (according to SCID) were recruited from three hospital/clinic sites. They were randomized into integrated yoga therapy group, aerobic exercise programme group, and waiting list as the control group. Both interventions were held three times weekly. At baseline and at 12 weeks, clinical symptoms, cognitive functions, quality of life and fitness levels were assessed in all participants, and completed structural MRI data were collected in 58 patients. Repeated measures ANOVA and ANCOVA analyses of the clinical, cognitive, quality of life and fitness data were compared between baseline and at 12 weeks among the three groups. Post-hoc Bonferroni test was used for comparing between two groups. Structural MRI data was analyzed by FreeSurfer V5.1 and Qdec V1.4 to calculate the brain volume and cortical thickness. Results Completed clinical and cognitive data were collected in 85 patients, and completed MRI imaging data of good quality were collected in 39 patients. No significant differences in age, education years, and duration of the illness at baseline were observed among the three groups. Both yoga and aerobic exercise groups demonstrated significant improvements in verbal encoding (pSignificant increases were observed in the thickness of the left superior frontal gyrus and the right inferior frontal gyrus (pars triangularis) in the aerobic exercise group. Significant increases were observed in the volume of the postcentral gyrus and the posterior corpus callosum in the yoga group. There was a statistically significant correlation between improvements in working memory and changes in the postcentral gyrus (r=0.54, pDiscussion Both types of exercise improved memory in early psychosis patients, with yoga having a superior effect on attention than aerobic exercise. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. Abstract: Background: A study of the impact of yoga and aerobic exercise and psychosis was conducted in 2012 by Lin et al., from The University of Hong Kong. The study indicated significant improvement in the aspects of physical fitness, cognitive functions, psychosocial and emotional functioning in patients with psychosis after a 12-week yoga or aerobic intervention program. Long-term effect of exercise intervention, however, had yet been determined. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term effects of yoga and aerobic exercise on cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms in early psychosis. Patients who originally participated in Lin et al.'s 2012 study were recruited and re-assessed in this current 18-month follow-up study. Methods: Two intervention groups (yoga and aerobic exercise group) and one control group (wait-list control group) of a total 57 subjects from the initial study were recruited in this follow-up study. Cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms were assessed at three time points (T1: Baseline, T2:12-week, T3:18-month). Results: No significant changes or significant deterioration were found in cognitive functioning, clinical symptoms and depression between T2 (12-week) and T3 (18-month) in both intervention groups (yoga and aerobic group). Significant improvement of clinical symptoms was observed in wait-list control group at T3. Conclusions: Although there is no significant finding in this current study, it is still recommended that further study on the relationship between physical exercise intervention and psychosis should carried out in order to explore other adjunct, and especially low cost, treatment to antipsychotics in treating people with psychosis.
