It then goes on to delineate research-informed treatment approaches for NSSI, with an emphasis on functional assessment, emotion regulation, and problem solving, including motivational interviewing, interpersonal skills, CBT, DBT, behavioral management strategies, delay behaviors, exercise, family therapy, risk management, and medication, as well as how to successfully combine methods.

Download or read book Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image written by Hillary L. McBride and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When women are told that what is important about us is how we look, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to feel comfortable with our appearance and how we feel about our bodies. We are told, over and over—if we just lost weight, fit into those old jeans, or into a new smaller pair—we will be happier and feel better about ourselves. The truth is, so many women despise their appearance, weight, and shape, that experts who study women’s body image now consider this feeling to be normal. But it does not have to be that way. It is possible for us as women to love ourselves, our bodies, as we are. We need a new story about what it means to be a woman in this world. Based on her original research, Hillary L McBride shares the true stories of young women, and their mothers, and provides unique insights into how our relationships with our bodies are shaped by what we see around us and the specific things we can do to have healthier relationships with our appearance, and all the other parts of ourselves that make us women. In Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image McBride tells her own story of recovery from an eating disorder, and how her struggles led her to dream of a new vision for womanhood—from one without body shame, negative comparisons, or insecurities, to one of freedom, connection, and acceptance.

This has led to some distressing statistics, with up to 10 percent of college-aged women in the United States suffering from an eating disorder. While individual women can focus on cultivating a healthy body image, it is important for young women to analyze how the media and others encourage unhealthy perceptions of what women's bodies are supposed to look like. A glossary, a For More Information section, and additional avenues of research are provided to guide readers to better understand the importance of a healthy female body image.

Book Synopsis Media's Portrayal of the "ideal Image" with Emphasis on the "thin Ideal" and Its Effects on Women's Body Image by : Cristina Avila
Download or read book Media's Portrayal of the "ideal Image" with Emphasis on the "thin Ideal" and Its Effects on Women's Body Image written by Cristina Avila and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are bombarded with reminders of what they should look like to be considered attractive. The "ideal body image" represented by the media which emphasizes thinness, youth, and height is difficult for the average woman to attain. Past research has shown that exposure to media images representing the "ideal body" has negative effects on women's body image, self-esteem, mood, and can promote the development of eating disorders. The present study examined how the ideal female body image portrayed by the media impacts the way women feel about themselves in terms of body dissatisfaction, mood, self-esteem, and social comparison. Additionally, because past research has shown that the inclusion of warning label helps ameliorate the known negative effects of exposure to such images, this study explored the effects of warning labels on women's body dissatisfaction, mood, self-esteem, and social comparison. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: digitally altered without a warning label media image condition, digitally altered with a warning label media image condition, unaltered media image condition, or neutral condition. Overall, it was found that there were no significant effects of media image condition on measures of body dissatisfaction, negative affect, self-esteem, and social comparison. However, women who viewed digitally altered images with a warning label had significantly lower positive affect scores than those who viewed neutral images. Additionally, findings revealed that the use of warning labels does not reduce the negative effects associated with exposure to thin idealized media images. Although the present study did not demonstrate the profound negative effects of viewing the "ideal body image" found in most previous studies, further research is warranted given the importance of this topic.

Book Synopsis Effect of a Pant Size Manipulation on Women's Body Image, Self-esteem, and Mood by : Kerri J. Schafer
Download or read book Effect of a Pant Size Manipulation on Women's Body Image, Self-esteem, and Mood written by Kerri J. Schafer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research indicates that women often use external cues to gauge how they feel about their bodies. In addition, women with high levels of concern about shape and weight tend to interpret ambiguous external cues in a negative way. Women's pant sizes can be considered ambiguous cues because measurements of same size pants vary significantly between manufacturers. The current study examined the impact pant size has on body image, self-esteem, and/or mood among women with differing levels of body concerns. Participants included 151 female undergraduate students at Missouri State University. Participants were randomly assigned to try on pants the same size as their self-reported size (Control), two sizes smaller than their self-report (Size Smaller), or two sizes larger than their self-report (Size Larger). The actual size of the pants was concealed with a tag showing the participant's self-reported size. While wearing the pants, participants completed measures of body image, self-esteem, and mood. Data analyses indicated women in the Size Smaller group endorsed significantly more negative body image and appearance-based self-esteem than did women in the Control and/or Size Larger Group. In addition, women with high levels of body dissatisfaction endorsed more negative body image, self-esteem, and mood than did women with average body dissatisfaction. No interaction between condition and level of body dissatisfaction was found, indicating that trying on pants that are expected to fit but that fit too tightly is a salient experience for women with even average levels of body dissatisfaction.
