The interventions applied, consisting of curricular design, classroom practices, and instructor behaviors, were as follows : (1) use of unit outlines , (2) incorporating review work , (3) collaborative groupwork, (4) perceived instructor empathy , (5) concepts explained in various ways , (6) out-of-class 1:1 aid , (7) content made relevant , (8) positive reinforcement from instructor/peers . The research was performed in an Algebra 1 classroom of a public high school, containing 64 students, over the course of 1 semester (18 weeks). A presurvey and postsurvey measured students' math anxiety levels, while all 8 interventions were applied continuously throughout the semester. Pre - and post anxiety levels, semester grades, and supplementary postsurvey questions regarding students' opinions on intervention effectiveness produced the statistically significant result that targeted interventions do reduce math anxiety. However, when grouped according to achievement level, this result only holds for those students defined by high academic achievement. Overall, the most effective intervention methods were a caring instructor, an encouraging learning environment, and mixing in review work throughout the semester. The self-regulated learning strategies examined included personal time management, how to read your mathematics textbook for understanding, organizational skills, mathematics test taking and preparation, and the use of estimation in solving mathematics problems. Preservice elementary teachers with these improved learning skills may in turn become more successful teachers of mathematics. The effect of training in self-regulated learning as a treatment for math anxiety is not well established. However, self-regulated learning has been associated with improved mathematics and science problem solving (De Corte, Verschaffel, & Op't Eynde, 2000; Taylor & Corrigan, 2005; Zan, 2000). Increased use of self-regulated learning strategies has also been associated with a reduction in test anxiety (Hofer & Yu, 2003; Pintrich, 2000; Zeidner, 1998). Therefore, training in self-regulated learning strategies has the potential to reduce math anxiety among preservice elementary teachers. Elementary education majors in a course in mathematics concepts were given training in self-regulated learning strategies. A control group of similar students received the same classroom instruction by the same college professor. The professor did not participate in the training sessions that were led by this researcher. Both treatment and control groups were given pretests and posttests: the Abbreviated Mathematics Anxiety Scale - to measure math anxiety, the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire - to measure use of self-regulated learning strategies, and a Mathematics Achievement Test - to measure changes in content knowledge. The analyses used t-tests and correlations to compare the participants' pretest and posttest scores on the three scales. The use of self-regulated learning strategies was not shown to reduce math anxiety or improve achievement among the elementary education majors in this study. This result may have been due to various limitations, such as insufficient time for applying and following up on the training and an inability to fully embed the training into the course content. Future research should investigate if, given the proper conditions, self-regulated learning strategies will reduce math anxiety and improve the learning of mathematics concepts, leading to more effective mathematics teaching in the elementary classrooms.

Book excerpt: Math anxiety in adults impacts performance in mathematics as well as motivation to enter STEM disciplines, irrespective of math competence. Less is known about the link between math anxiety and achievement in younger students, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie this relation, and the social factors that contribute to the development of math anxiety. Across three studies, I address whether children report math anxiety as early as 1st and 2nd grade, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie a relation between math anxiety and math achievement, and whether a child's teacher might contribute to his/her math anxiety and his/her math performance across the school year they share. A within-subjects pre/post design with students (Studies 1 and 2) and their respective teachers (Study 3) was used. In Study 1, I find that 1st and 2nd graders show variability in their self-reported feelings of math anxiety, and further that children's math anxiety relates to math but not reading achievement. To address why this is the case, I ask whether the math anxiety-achievement relation is moderated by individual differences in working memory capacity. I find that children with higher working memory (WM) counter-intuitively show a more distinct negative math anxiety-achievement relation compared to their lower WM counterparts. In Study 2, I replicate the results of Study 1 with a larger sample of students using both linear regression and hierarchical linear modeling to account for classroom variation in achievement. I also turn towards the literature on individual differences in problem solving strategies to put forth an account of why children with higher WM demonstrate a more pronounced math anxiety-achievement relation. Lastly, in Study 3, I examine whether teachers' math anxiety relates to their students' growth in math achievement and their students' math anxiety across the school year. I find that teacher math anxiety is a significant negative predictor of girls' (but not boys') change in math achievement from the beginning to the end of the school year. However, I do not find evidence for a relation between teacher math anxiety and student math anxiety. This work provides the first empirical evidence of children's math anxiety early in development and its relation to math performance. These results will inform interventions designed to safeguard students from the detrimental effects of math anxiety.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine whether the use of anxiety reduction and mathematics study skills techniques incorporated in a Basic Math course would lower students' math anxiety and increase achievement in African American students enrolled in a Historically Black College. This study was limited to only African American students enrolled in two sections of Basic Math at Rust College, in Holly Springs, Mississippi: one control class (33 students) and one treatment class (33 students). One professor, the researcher, taught the same lectures and used traditional methods of teaching in both classes. In the treatment class the teacher used anxiety reduction and math study skills techniques such as collaborative learning, journal writing, learning activities, relaxation instructions, and test taking skills over an eight week period. Identical math content was covered in both sections. Achievement was measured by the Rust College Placement Exam and mathematics anxiety was measured by administering the Math Anxiety Rating Scale after each class test. The obtained results indicated a significant reduction in anxiety (p = .000) and a significant increase in achievement (p = .000) for the treatment group. Additionally, a significant difference in gender was indicated for anxiety (p = .019), but not for achievement (p = .779) for the treatment group.

In this quantitative study, the two research questions were: to what extent do honors math courses contribute to students’ mathematics anxiety who qualify for honors courses during the transition from elementary to middle school? And, to what extent does recent mathematics performance relate to students’ mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school? Mathematics anxiety was examined through the motivational theory of expectancy-value, which explores the relationship between individual beliefs and achievement. Most studies agree that mathematics anxiety increases in adolescence, however the reason for the increased anxiety is not clear. In sixth grade, students participated in a Likert-scale survey called the Math Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). The research participants completed the survey two additional times after the transition to seventh grade. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, comparing the responses of students in academic math to the data of students in honors math courses in middle school and how the responses changed over time. The statistically significant increase in overall mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school was consistent with existing research. The study also indicated the increase in evaluation anxiety was significantly greater for students in the honors course when compared to students in the academic math course. Students in the academic course have consistently higher problem-solving anxiety throughout the study. These differences in anxiety can be used to further the understanding of mathematics anxiety and what can be done to remediate mathematics anxiety and its effect on mathematics achievement.

Finally, 13 educators participated in the RDCA: 11 middle school and 2 high school math educators. The researcher aimed to answer the following three research questions: (1) What are the similarities and differences of how middle and high school math educators recognize math anxiety in their students? (2) What creative teaching strategies do middle and high school math educators implement to decrease math anxiety among their students? (3) Do middle and high school mathematics educators have similar or different risk taking, tolerance of ambiguity, and originality when identifying their own creative strengths? The conceptual framework of this study involves experience teaching middle and high school mathematics, working/collaborating directly with middle and high school math educators, and implementing interventions and creative teaching strategies to reduce math anxiety in middle and high school students. The findings of this study may be used to: (1) help middle and high school math educators to understand how to identify math anxiety in their students, (2) understand creative teaching strategies and its implementation to reduce math anxiety in middle and high school students, and (3) help middle and high school math educators identify their own creativity factors.
