Book excerpt: The Fish philosophy is based on four principles: (1) make their day, (2) be present in the moment, (3) play (within limits), (4) choose your attitude (p. 5). The new graduate nurse is defined as someone who has graduated from a National League of Nursing accredited school, passed the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, and is employed in their first clinical job. Research by Bowles and Candela found that 30% of new graduate nurses left their job in the first year and that by the second year almost 57% left. The use of preceptors in orientation of new graduate nurses has the potential to assist them in assimilation into the work place by creating a positive environment, and the study was designed to look at how much, if any, preceptors using the Fish philosophy influence the new graduate nurse's self-esteem and job satisfaction.
