Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if cold water immersion increases reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) in the combined ankle and subtalar joint motions of dorsiflexion and eversion. Fifteen females (Xage=22.9 + 2.9 yrs; Xheight=161.9 + 6.7 cm; Xweight=60-8 f 9.0 kg) without ankle dysfunction and who participate in at least three hours of regular exercise per week were subjects in this study. Subjects completed two sessions in randomized order. For the treatment condition, the dominant ankle was submerged in cold water (13-150C) for 20 minutes. For the control session, the subjects rested for 20 minutes. Reaction time and MT were measured using an electrical circuit. Measurements of RT and MT were recorded prior to treatment, immediately after treatment, and then every five minutes for 30 minutes. A repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that the interaction of time by treatment was significant for MT (F 7,98=3.00, p=.007), but not for RT. Tukey's post hoc test revealed significant differences existed between baseline treatment MT means and both immediate post-treatment and five minute post-treatment MT means, as well as between control and treatment conditions. Movement time means did approach baseline at 20-30 minutes post-treatment. Cold water immersion did affect subjects' MT but not RT. We concluded that a 20 minute recovery may be necessary for an individual to resume normal activity following cold water immersion.
