Book excerpt: This study investigated the prevalence of test anxiety and locus of control orientation in three groups of middle school students: Achieving Gifted (AG), Underachieving Gifted (UAG), and Nongifted (NG) students. Two instruments were used in the study: the Test Anxiety Inventory ( TAI) and the Children's Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale (CNSIE). Participants completed the TAI by indicating their level of agreement with 20 statements that measure test anxiety symptoms before, during, and after a testing session. Responses ranged between Almost Never (1) and Almost Always (4). Participants completed the CNSIE by selecting Yes or No to indicate whether or not each of 25 statements described their feelings about a variety of situations. Although none of the groups received extreme scores on either instrument, a 3 x 2 MANOVA indicated significant differences between the groups by gender and achievement classification (AG, UAG, and NG). Underachieving gifted students were more externally oriented than achieving gifted students. There was also a significant difference in the locus of control orientation between achieving gifted and nongifted students; nongifted students were more externally controlled than achieving gifted students. In regards to underachievers, males were more externally controlled than females. Regarding test anxiety, females consistently reported higher levels of anxiety than males. Findings suggest the need for school interventions to reduce test anxiety among females and to assist students in developing the thought processes that give them a sense of control over the events in their life, in particular, their academic performance.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role that math self-efficacy plays in the relationship between math anxiety and achievement among eighth grade students. Understanding the impact of self-efficacy on school motivation during adolescence is important because a decline in academic self-efficacy often begins during middle school. According to social cognitive theory, both math self-efficacy and math anxiety are variables that are associated with student performance. A correlational design was utilized in order to examine these relationships. Two self-reports were administered to the students in order to quantify levels of math anxiety and math self-efficacy. The students' most current grades in the subject of math were also incorporated into this study as the criterion variable. Results demonstrated that all three variables were significantly correlated and in the expected directions. Regression analyses revealed that although math anxiety was a significant predictor of achievement, math self-efficacy mediated the relationship between math anxiety and achievement. These results are consistent with those hypothesized by social cognitive theory. Despite the fact that mandated standardized testing is increasing in our schools, the primary implication of this study is that students' cognitions about their abilities in math are more important than their emotions or feelings about the subject of math. It is hoped that the results will help educators identify those students who may need additional assistance in order to become self-sufficient learners and confident in their abilities. Educators can also benefit by becoming aware of these other factors that can inhibit student learning.

Book excerpt: Middle school students with mathematics anxiety often struggle with math achievement, self-confidence, and behavior problems like avoidance and defiance. Not only can these students struggle in math class, but many continue to struggle with these problems into adulthood. This study reviews the connections between math anxiety, achievement, mindset, motivation and students' perception of their parents' involvement. To collect data, student math scores from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) were gathered and a survey was conducted with sixth through eight grade students about math anxiety, mindset, motivation and parental involvement. Then, correlations were calculated to discover whether there was a relationship between math anxiety and each of the other factors. It was found that all of the factors had a statistically significant relationship with math anxiety. The negative correlation between achievement and math anxiety was found to be consistent with past studies, while other results were consistent with the hypotheses based on the research. The results of this study have important implications for middle school teachers. Teachers who learn to identify students struggling with high levels of math anxiety early will be able to help students cope with how the anxiety manifests in the classroom and how to manage their behavior in appropriate ways.

However, there are limited resources that provide support for implementing strategies in the classroom that will help decrease mathematics test anxiety while increasing student performance. In an attempt to offer more research in this area, this study determined whether mathematics test anxiety coping strategies improved student performance on tests, increased confidence in math, and allowed students to become successful in mathematics. Data was used to determine whether the level of mathematics test anxiety decreased over the course of the study while student performance increased. Student survey questions were analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of the origin of mathematics test anxiety, what triggers mathematics test anxiety, how students felt during tests, and how students cope with their mathematics test anxiety. The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale, Elementary Form (MARS-E) was used to obtain the mathematics test anxiety scores from each of the students. A linear regression test was used to determine that the higher the level of the students' mathematics test anxiety the lower their performance. T-Tests were used to determine that through the implementation of mathematics test anxiety coping strategies, mathematics test anxiety decreased. Although the T-Test provided strong evidence that mathematics test anxiety is decreased among students, it provided weak evidence that student performance will increase. The student surveys determined that students with low levels of mathematics test anxiety tend to remain very positive about their performance. Students with a moderate level of mathematics test anxiety remained mostly positive about their performance, and put the most pressure on themselves to do well. With the students who had high levels of mathematics test anxiety, their attitude and thoughts about their performance was much lower than that of their peers. When their anxiety flared up during tests, the students did not know of any strategies they could use to help calm them down. Because of this, their mathematics test anxiety greatly affected their performance in mathematics.

One such intervention in middle school is a direct-instruction math program. This causal-comparative study examined the relationship between a direct-instruction math intervention and math achievement on standardized test scores of at-risk middle school students. This study compared the differences in the mean scale scores for at-risk middle-school students who received a direct-instruction math intervention and at-risk middle school students who did not receive a direct-instruction math intervention on the math subtest of the 2012 Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test, while using the 2011 scores as a control variable to control for previous math ability using a one-way between-groups analysis of covariate (ANCOVA) statistical test. Further, this study compared the relationship, by gender, between a direct-instruction math intervention and math achievement on standardized test scores. The data from the study suggests that the direct-instruction mathematic intervention did result in the intervention group having a significantly higher mean scale score on the 2012 mathematic subtest of the Georgia CRCT than the control group for both genders.
