Book excerpt: The effect of temperature on the sorption, biodegradation, and transport of monochlorobenzene (MCB) in soil was investigated through batch sorption, microcosm and column tests conducted under aerobic and abiotic conditions. The Freundlich distribution coefficients and retardation values estimated for a sandy soil with moderate organic content decreased over 40% from 22C to 55C under equilibrium sorption conditions. However, this effect was not observed in subsequent column tests where rate-limited conditions dominated. An aerobic consortium cultivated from aerobic sludge was enriched on MCB. Degradation rates evaluated from microcosm and column studies operating at 22C and O2 rich conditions indicated a half-life for MCB around 1 to 2 hours. Degradation rates were significantly reduced from 1.04hr -1 at 22C to 0.03hr-1 at 55C as demonstrated in both microcosm and column studies. The results of this investigation indicate thermally enhanced bioremediation will inhibit MCB degradation and thus should not be applied for MCB remediation.

Book excerpt: Using inoculum from an aerobic aquifer, microcosm tests revealed that aerobic toluene biodegradation rates increased with increasing temperatures over the temperature range 22°C to 60°C. However, in column tests, biodegradation occurred faster at lower temperatures due to oxygen limitations. In subsequent column tests with a methanogenic consortium at 22°C, 35°C and 50°C, toluene biodegradation was only slightly greater at 35°C than at 22°C, while reduced activity was observed at 50°C. The results of the study indicate that for toluene and the silty soil tested, there is little benefit to be gained by raising soil temperatures through subsurface heating. The effect of temperature on biodegradation, sorption and transport of toluene was studied in batch and column tests under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. A silty soil tested for sorption isotherms exhibited little change in distribution coefficients with the temperature increased from 22°C to 60°C.

Book excerpt: Advances in Agronomy continues to be recognized as a leading reference and a first-rate source of the latest and best research in agronomy. As always, the topics covered are varied and exemplary of the panoply of subject matter dealt with by this long-running serial.Volume 69 contains five excellent reviews dealing with crop and soil sciences. Chapter 1 is a comprehensive and timely review of the measurement and interpretation of bulk mass-transfer phenomena for organic compounds in soils. Chapter 2 is an excellent overview of environmental indicators of agroecosystems. In chapter 3, an interesting treatise is presented on plant growth as effected by phosphate solubilizing soil microorganisms. Chapter 4 is a fine review on hydrological factors affecting phosphorus transfer from agricultural soils. The concluding chapter is an excellent discussion of the genetic resources of Cassava Manihot esculenta Crantz.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, officials responsible for clean-up of contaminated groundwater have increasingly turned to natural attenuation-essentially allowing naturally occurring processes to reduce the toxic potential of contaminants-versus engineered solutions. This saves both money and headaches. To the people in surrounding communities, though, it can appear that clean-up officials are simply walking away from contaminated sites. When is natural attenuation the appropriate approach to a clean-up? This book presents the consensus of a diverse committee, informed by the views of researchers, regulators, and community activists. The committee reviews the likely effectiveness of natural attenuation with different classes of contaminants-and describes how to evaluate the "footprints" of natural attenuation at a site to determine whether natural processes will provide adequate clean-up. Included are recommendations for regulatory change. The committee emphasizes the importance of the public's belief and attitudes toward remediation and provides guidance on involving community stakeholders throughout the clean-up process. The book explores how contamination occurs, explaining concepts and terms, and includes case studies from the Hanford nuclear site, military bases, as well as other sites. It provides historical background and important data on clean-up processes and goes on to offer critical reviews of 14 published protocols for evaluating natural attenuation.

Hazardous waste generally exhibits one or more of these characteristics: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity or toxicity. The universe of hazardous wastes is large and diverse. Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, contained gases, or sludges. They can be the by-products of manufacturing processes or simply discarded commercial products, like cleaning fluids or pesticides. One major type is radioactive waste. This book brings together the latest research in this diverse field.

Book excerpt: Given the presence of a wide variety of contaminants in the environment, it is important to understand what drives a contaminant from one medium to another, as well as the manner and extent to which a contaminant associates with the different media or phases within a local environmental system. Partition and Adsorption of Organic Contaminants in Environmental Systems forms a comprehensive resource on the behavioral characteristics of contaminants so that appropriate strategies can be adopted to either prevent or minimize their adverse impacts on human welfare and natural resources. Cary Chiou’s far-reaching text depicts the processes by which nonionic organic contaminants are sorbed to natural biotic and abiotic substances. This book focuses on physical principles and system parameters that affect the contaminant uptake by soil from water, air, and other media; by fish from water; and by plants from soil and water. As contaminant uptake by natural organic substances is often predominantly a partition interaction, the partition characteristics in several solvent-water model mixtures are treated in detail to elucidate the relevant physicochemical parameters. The account of contaminant sorption to soils, fish, and plants is strengthened by companion chapters on: Fundamentals of solution theory Interphase partition equations Fundamentals of adsorption theory Vapor adsorption on mineral and carbonaceous solids No other single source in the field delivers as compelling a combination of background understanding and "state-of-the-science" comprehension of current issues. Ideally suited for a graduate-level environmental course, Partition and Adsorption of Organic Contaminants in Environmental Systems also serves as a technical guide to current and future research in the field.
