Book excerpt: Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers reinforced polyethylene (PE) matrix composites are attractive materials for applications such as ballistic protection, satellite radiation shielding, and implants. However, the UHMWPE fibers do not bond well with the PE matrix and a very good interfacial bonding is essential to yield composites with good mechanical properties required for the identified applications. Hence, this study is focused on identifying the best surface treatment to maximize the bonding between a commercially available Dyneema UHMWPE fiber and a high density polyethylene matrix (HDPE). The effect of three fiber surface treatments, plasma treatment, chromic acid treatment, and sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid coatings on interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was studied using a fiber pull out test. The treated fiber surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to support the analysis using IFSS. The fiber surface became rough after treatment, which increased with treatment time. The FT-IR and XPS spectra revealed an increase in the atomic ratio of O/C (except for chromic acid treatment) and Si/C after different treatments, when compared to untreated fibers. Oxygen containing groups were found prominently on the surfaces of the plasma and chromic acid treated fiber surfaces suggesting an increase in the surface roughness due to surface etching. The IFSS increased with decrease in embedment length. Among the three treatments, chromic acid treatment for 1 minute resulted in the maximum enhancement of the IFSS over untreated fibers. Treatment in oxygen plasma for 6 minutes and in sol-gel solution for 1 minute resulted in an enhancement slightly lower than that due to chromic acid treatment.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three micro-structural parameters that influence the mechanical properties of discontinuous fiber thermoplastic composites are Fiber Orientation Distribution (FOD), Fiber Length Distribution (FLD) and fiber volume fraction (Vf). During manufacturing FOD in a composite would change due to fiber rotation caused by shear flow, extensional flow or a combination of both. Previous studies on flow-induced orientation is limited only to injection molding, capillary and parallel plate rheometers. Knowledge on the combined effect of die design and process variables on fiber orientation during extrusion of composites using a twin screw extruder is currently not available Developing this knowledge is the goal of this thesis. HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)fibers and HDPE composite fibers consisting of the each of the following reinforcements (micron-sized glass fibers (aspect ratio of 27), glass spheres (aspect ratio of 1), and carbon nano tubes (CNT) were extruded by varying die design (9 dies),screw speed, and reinforcement volume fraction in the feed. The FOD) and Vf in the composite melt, determined using X-ray tomography of the frozen samples, was found to vary along the extrusion line as well as with the variables identified above. Hence, the viscosity of the melt, determined using Cogswell approach and verified independently using rheometer measurements and modeled using modified Ausias' model, also varied. The change in FOD in the melt within the die due to imposed extensional and shear strains was successfully modeled using Dihn-Armstrong model. The change in the viscosity of the melt within the die due to changes in FOD together with pressure gradient across the die, which develops concurrently, determined the mass flow rate (i.e volumetric flow rate) of composite melt out of the die. This demand on mass flow rate imposed by the die was met by the extruder by varying the amount of melt coming out of the reservoir (at the end of the screws).Simulation suggests that shear strain results in better orientation than extensional strain.. The die with least cone angle (30o) resulted in maximum fiber orientation and output mass flow rate at least die pressure, when compared to other dies for the same feed rate and screw speed.

Book excerpt: Cellulose is a versatile and renewable natural resource which has attracted increasing attention in the last decade, expecially after the energy crisis of 1973. Apart from its extensive use as asolid product, wood is the most important source of cellulose fibres for papermaking and is also widely used as a source of energy. The form and availability ot· the forest provides a great opportunity for technological improvement and innovation in the future to satisfy the foreseeable increasing demand for wood based products. For example, North American sawmills and plywood mills presently recover only about 45 to 55% of logged wood while the remainder is disposed as waste, if it is not used in pulp manufacturing. In addition, top and branch wood, and logs from non-commercial species which are presently not recovered from the logging sites could provide an abundant and relatively inexpensive resource for the manufacture of composite products. Other valuable potential sour ces of cellulosic materials are waste paper and agricultural waste. A composite is the consolidation of two polymerie materials such that one of the components acts as the adhesive binder while the other forms the substrate matrix. In some cases, the matrix and the adhesive may be the same materials. To maximize the adhesion potential of the composite, the properties of the substrate which can enhance, hinder or complicate the development of optimum adhesion should be thoroughly explored and identified.
