The model test results show the effect of surface finish, characterized by friction coefficient or surface roughness, on resistance, within the range of parameters covered.

As the name of IUTAM implies, the organization brings forward achievements within the field of theore tical mechanics for application in science and engineer ing. According to the rules of IUTAM that only invited persons can attend, all lecturers and participants have been ap pOinted by the members of the scientific committee. To facilitate contact among the attending persons, it has been decided to restrict the total number to 85 persons including the lecturers. Only one session is planned, making it possible for everybody to attend all lectures. Most scientists and engineers have realized that the knowledge attained by extensive basic research is essen tial in order to solve technological problems. In the process of acquiring this knowledge we often fail to un derstand that scientific progress is only achieved by two main principles: (1) By studying the scientific litera ture and applying or improving the theories in order to predict behaviour and forces correctly, or (2) by re jecting existing theories and developing new ways to cope with the problem, resulting in a more differenti ated and, hopefully, more exact theory. Ice seems to be a simple material, but it is in fact so complex and strange that it is only in the latest dec ades that we have come to know some of the natural laws governing its behaviour.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the relative influence of various parameters on the kinetic friction coefficient mu sub k between ice and different surfaces. Friction tests were performed with urea-doped, columnar ice, studying the parameters of normal pressure, velocity, type of material, material roughness, ice orientation, ice hardness and test configuration. Tests were conducted by pulling a sample of ice over a sheet of material and by pulling a sample of material over an ice sheet. An ambient temperature of -1.5 + or - 1 deg C was maintained throughout, and the ice surface hardness was measured using a specially designed apparatus. The results of the friction tests revealed that the behavior of mu sub k with varying velocity was significantly influenced by the test configuration and material roughness. The magnitude of the kinetic friction coefficient was also affected by varying normal pressure, surface roughness and ice hardness. Additional guidelines for standardized ice friction tests and future investigations were recommended.

Great Lakes icebreaker are presented and compared to available full-scale data. In spite of the difficulties in exactly modeling full-scale conditions, the predictions based on the model test results of the ship performance compared reasonably well to those measured during full-scale trials. Several possible sources of errors are identified. In particular, duplication at the model scale of the ship hull's ice friction coefficient is considered to be critical in determining the ice resistance and the corresponding propulsion characteristics, namely propeller speed, thrust and torque. Frictional resistance can be obtained by the integration of the measured shear stress distribution over the hull, and pressure resistance can be obtained from the integration of the measured pressure distribution on the hull. Pressure resistance is further divided into a wave component and a viscous component (form drag). Wave resistance can be measured by a method which takes a longitudinal or a transverse cut of the wave pattern. The expressions for computing the frictional and the pressure resistance from the measured shear stress and normal pressure distributions are derived. Experimental techniques for measuring the magnitude as well as the direction of shear stress were explored in detail by hot-film shear probes. These probes are recommended for measuring the shear stress distribution on small models for measuring the shear stress distribution on small models tested in towing tanks; hot-film shear probes with ambient temperature compensation and directional Preston probes are recommended for use in tests of full-scale ships and large-scale models.
