However, the typical methods of producing hydrogen such as gasoline and natural gas reforming are not environmentally clean. Bio Ethanol steam reforming (BESR) which is a carbon-emission free process shows potential for production of hydrogen. Cobalt based catalysts have shown promising BESR activity and are economically viable alternatives to the traditional noble metal based (Ni, Rh, Pt). Cerium oxide based supports are shown to have higher oxygen mobility which enhances catalyst activity. A more detailed research of the different morphologies of CeO2 nanocrystals such as polyhedra, rods and cubes can improve our understanding of the effect of support morphology on BESR. Therefore, in this paper the catalytic performance of cobalt catalysts supported on CeO2 in different morphologies was investigated for production of hydrogen via BESR. The cobalt-based catalysts were synthesized by precipitation and hydrothermal method and prepared by incipient wetness impregnation (IWI). Those catalysts were characterized through various techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements as well as steady-state activity testing on catalyst performance with a gas chromatograph (GC). With the current data provided by the GC, Co/CeO2 nanocubes showed the best catalytic performance at high temperature (450, 500 °C), indicating the highest hydrogen yield of 96 % and 100% ethanol conversion at 500 °C. Also, Co/CeO2 nanopolyhedra were the most active catalysts at low temperature (350, 400 °C), having the highest hydrogen yield of 87.5% and 93.5% ethanol conversion at 400 °C. Therefore, it is concluded that the effects of different actives sites and crystal planes of support morphologies play a role in improving the catalytic performance of Co/CeO2 for BESR.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethanol steam reforming (ESR) reaction has been tested over RhPd supported on polycrystalline ceria in comparison to structured supports composed of nanoshaped CeO2 cubes and CeO2 rods tailored towards the production of hydrogen. At 650-700 K the hydrogen yield follows the trend RhPd/CeO2-cubes> RhPd/CeO2 -rods> RhPd/CeO2- polycrystalline, whereas at temperatures higher than 800 K the catalytic performance of all samples is similar and close to the thermodynamic equilibrium. The improved performance of RhPd/CeO2-cubes and RhPd/CeO2 -rods for ESR at low temperature is mainly ascribed to higher water-gas shift activity and a strong interaction between the bimetallic - oxide support interaction. STEM analysis shows the existence of RhPd alloyed nanoparticles in all samples, with no apparent relationship between ESR performance and RhPd particle size. X-ray diffraction under operating conditions shows metal reorganization on and ceria crystallographic planes during catalyst activation and ESR, but not on ceria crystallographic planes. The RhPd reconstructing and tuned activation over ceria nanocubes and nanorods is considered the main reason for better catalytic activity with respect to conventional catalysts based on polycrystalline ceria.

Book excerpt: Ambient-Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (AP-IRRAS) have been used to elucidate the active sites and mechanistic steps associated with the ethanol steam reforming reaction (ESR) over Ni-CeO2(111) model catalysts. Our results reveal that surface layers of the ceria substrate are both highly reduced and hydroxylated under reaction conditions while the small supported Ni nanoparticles are present as Ni0/NixC. A multifunctional, synergistic role is highlighted in which Ni, CeOx and the interface provide an ensemble effect in the active chemistry that leads to H2. Ni0 is the active phase leading to both C-C and C-H bond cleavage in ethanol and it is also responsible for carbon accumulation. On the other hand, CeOx is important for the deprotonation of ethanol/water to ethoxy and OH intermediates. The active state of CeOx is a Ce3+(OH)x compound that results from extensive reduction by ethanol and the efficient dissociation of water. Additionally, we gain an important insight into the stability and selectivity of the catalyst by its effective water dissociation, where the accumulation of surface carbon can be mitigated by the increased presence of surface OH groups. As a result, the co-existence and cooperative interplay of Ni0 and Ce3+(OH)x through a metal-support interaction facilitate oxygen transfer, activation of ethanol/water as well as the removal of coke.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating and controlling the catalyst-support interfacial interaction/structure and their effects on catalytic performance are crucial for optimizing the activity, selectivity, and durability of catalytic materials, as the heterogeneous catalytic reactions typically take place on the catalyst surface and/or at the interface between the catalyst and support. Ceria (CeO2), due to its remarkable redox activity, has been widely adopted as an active support material or promoter in a multitude of redox catalytic reactions and is the focus of this research. With the goal of bridging the predictable catalyst design-fundamental understanding of performance-practical application, we expect to develop uniform and well-defined CeO2 nanostructures as model supports to investigate the underlying mechanism of the catalyst-support interactions, and furthermore establish the correlation between interfacial structure and catalytically active sites. In Chapter 2, reducible CeO2 nanorods and nanocubes, as well as irreducible SiO2 nanospheres supported cobalt oxides (CoOx) catalysts were synthesized and comparatively studied to understand the effects of support morphology, surface defect, support reducibility, in addition to the CoOx-support interactions on their redox and catalytic properties. Chapter 3 focuses on exploring the role of “bimetallic catalysts-support interaction” over highly active CeO2 nanorods supported pure cobalt oxides and cobalt-based bimetallic oxides nanoparticles (Fe-Co, Ni-Co and Cu-Co). The interactions between cobalt with the second transition metals (Fe, Ni and Cu) are discussed as well. Nanoparticle agglomeration issue always exists when using wet-chemical methods to synthesize CeO2 nanomaterials, which is harmful for catalytic applications due to decreased surface area. Therefore, Chapter 4 presents a scalable and facile electrospinning process for designing novel fibrous structured CeO2 and one-pot synthesis of high-surface-area, thermally stable and low-temperature active Ru-CeO2 nanofiber catalysts. Besides, attracted by the great interest of three-dimensional (3D) nanoarray structures fabrication towards novel and high-performance catalyst design, as well as nanodevice applications, electrochemical deposition technique was adopted for fabricating CeO2 nanoarrays in Chapter 5. Processing factors on growing controllable CeO2 nanoarrays, including the current density, reaction temperature, stirring rate, anode and substrate types were comprehensively investigated. A scale-up synthetic strategy for CeO2 nanoarrays fabrication is developed. Besides, possible mechanisms for morphological evolution and growth of CeO2 nanoarrays are discussed.
