Book excerpt: "The quality of rivers and streams are affected by the land-use-land-cover (LULC) compositions that are present within their watersheds and riparian buffers. Hence, understanding how these LULC compositions, present within watersheds, influences water quality of these water bodies is very important for river management and restoration. This dissertation research was undertaken with the goal of examining the effects changing LULC on stream system. The research was conducted in the Reedy Fork Buffalo Creek watershed in Guilford County, North Carolina to provide a study area of streams within a nested watershed assemblage with a variety of sub-watersheds and varying LULC proportions for comparison. Toward this end, LULC spatial fragmentation of the Reedy Fork Buffalo Creek watershed was quantified for the 2002 through 2013 study period based on remote sensing data. This watershed is located at the headwaters of the Cape Fear River basin, the largest river basin in North Carolina. Analysis of how river flow and several water quality variables were related to landscape attributes at three scales: 100 m, 150 m, and watershed was then performed. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to examine the contribution of LULC to water yield and nitrate loadings in the year 2030 relative to future LULC change scenarios. Results show that the water quality of the Reedy Fork Buffalo Creek changed significantly during the recent decades. These changes in space and time indicate a trend of accelerating deterioration in water quality. Also, LULC pattern had major impacts on the flow and water quality of the Reedy Fork Creek at multiple spatial scales. In particular, impervious LULC, although small in percent cover, exerted a disproportionately large influence both locally and over distance. Results also show that most water quality variables (Conductivity, hardness, nitrate, TKN, and Turbidity) were correlated with landscape pattern on all three spatial scales although the correlation was stronger at the watershed scale than at the buffer scales. Additionally, results from the scenario analysis shows that, compared to the current situation (2010), a 13.5% increase in surface runoff, 9.26% increase in water yield, and 31.85% in increase in nitrate yield was recorded for 2030. These increases were due to the conversion of forest and grass into impervious surfaces. The research highlighted the probable role of the interactions between LULC spatial distribution and water quality. This scale multiplicity suggests that, while water-monitoring and river restoration need to adopt a multi-scale perspective, particular attention should be paid to the watershed scale. In the context of population growth and increasing urban development continuing into the 21st century, preservation and restoration of vegetative LULC and the elimination of impervious surfaces within the watershed should be a primary concern for the general public, the scientific community, and public policy decision makers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Using water-quality and streamflow data collected since the 1940's, a study is underway to define certain variations in water quality, to quantify the effects of man 's activities on water quality, and to determine long-term trends at key locations on the State 's major river. Data collected from 47 unpolluted stream sites were used to estimate average concentrations for naturally occurring constituents during periods of high and low flow. Methods are described for estimating constituent loads derived from both natural sources and sources of pollution. (Woodard-USGS)

Book excerpt: Headwater stream reaches, vital areas of exchange between upland and aquatic systems, are commonly affected by stream burial because they constitute a large fraction of total stream length and are more economically feasible to bury than higher order streams. In the U.S., much of the work concerning stream burial has occurred in large cities (e.g. Baltimore, Detroit), but this has been widely overlooked in smaller municipalities, particularly those located within the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The objectives of this study were to determine how urbanization affects drainage density (via stream network alterations such as burial and channelization) and influences the adjacent riparian vegetation and instream organic carbon retention in low-order Coastal Plain streams. For the purpose of this study percent total impervious area (%TIA) was used as a proxy for urbanization. It was hypothesized that urbanized watersheds (>20% TIA) would have a higher piped ([less than or equal to] 15 in. or [greater-than or equal to] 38 cm diameter) drainage density than suburban and rural watersheds (20% TIA). It was also hypothesized that watersheds with20% TIA would depict stream-adjacent riparian buffer degradation and reductions in instream organic matter concentrations. Seven watersheds (1.0 km2 to 3.3 km2) were chosen to portray a range of urbanization influences on receiving streams across an urban land-use gradient of 6.9% to 65.6% TIA. For each watershed, nested sampling (stream sediment and water quality) was performed at upstream, midstream, and downstream sites. In-situ evaluations of buffer integrity and stream assessment were performed at the same sites. Results indicated that piped drainage density and %TIA were strongly correlated (R=0.99) across each full watershed and all sub-watersheds (R=0.86). Results also indicated that streamside riparian areas with 20% TIA were relatively unaltered while20% TIA ranged from somewhat altered to severely altered. Results of the instream organic matter analysis depicted significant relationships with non-purgeable organic carbon (p0.05) and the non-purgeable organic carbon to total dissolved nitrogen ratio (p

Book excerpt: Eutrophication has become one of the major environmental issues of global concern due to the adverse effects on water quality, public health, and ecosystem sustainability. Fundamental research on the restoration of eutrophic freshwaters, i.e., lakes and rivers, is crucial to supporting further evidence-based practical implementations. The 12 published research papers can be classified into to three major aspects of this topic, into which they provide valuable contributions. Firstly, a background investigation into the migration of nutrients and the characteristics of submerged biota will guide and assist understanding of the mechanisms of future restoration. Secondly, various restoration strategies are studied and evaluated, including control of both external and internal nutrient loading. Thirdly, an evaluation of field sites after restoration treatment is reported in order to support the selection of appropriate restoration approaches. We foresee that the papers will significantly contribute to eutrophication control, natural water sustainability, and ecological restoration.

Book excerpt: Degradation of water quality in the streams and estuaries of North Carolina in recent years has resulted in regulations to reduce the introduction of numerous types of contaminants to this system. In the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins, excessive amounts of nitrogen have been identified as causing increased algal growth, low dissolved oxygen concentrations, and have been linked to increased growth of toxic microorganisms such as Pfiesteria piscicida. There are numerous sources of nitrogen to the basins; however, agricultural nonpoint sources have been identified as the largest contributor of nitrogen. Riparian buffers, controlled drainage, and nutrient management have been identified as effective BMPs for reducing nitrogen transport to streams under many landscape conditions. As a result, a combination of nutrient management, controlled drainage, and riparian buffer best management practices have been mandated in the Neuse River Basin to reduce the loss of agricultural nonpoint source pollution. A large portion of the agricultural nonpoint source nitrogen losses to surface waters in the Neuse River Basin originate in the Middle Coastal Plain. These lands are drained by irregularly spaced first and second order streams that have often been channelized (i.e. deepened) to enhance drainage. The riparian vegetation has often been removed from these channelized streams. The effectiveness of riparian buffers and controlled drainage are not well documented under these landscape conditions that are common in the Middle Coastal Plain region. Controlled drainage may not be economical in this region because multiple control structures would be required to maintain a suitable water table elevation in this gently sloping landscape. Implementation of riparian buffers has met strong resistance from the agricultural community due to the potential loss of land. A few studies have also found that nitrogen rich groundwater may enter deeply incised or channelized streams below the ac.
