Book excerpt: Much research has been conducted in order to determine the most significant variables associated with student academic achievement. This study explored the association among student goal orientation, self-efficacy, and academic achievement measured by GPA in a sample of undergraduate students from a large evangelical university. The trichotomous model for goal orientation was utilized including: mastery goals (motivated by a desire to master a task or subject), performance-approach goals (motivated by a desire to perform well in comparison with to others), and performance-avoidant goals (motivated by a fear of failure). Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance for the fixed factors of median split self-efficacy and GPA range. The outcome variable was student scores for mastery, performance-approach and performance-avoidant goal orientation respectively. Results indicated no significant interaction between GPA range and self-efficacy for any of the three models. However, GPA range had a significant main effect on performance-approach orientation and self-efficacy had a significant main effect on mastery orientation. Moreover, bivariate correlations demonstrated significant correlations between student self-efficacy scores and each type of goal orientation. Implications were discussed regarding the benefits of promoting both mastery and performance-approach goals through instructional practices as a means to promote learning and student retention in academic institutions.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Learner motivational constructs of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and goal orientation in predicting successful student performance in online courses were explored. Thirty-three undergraduate students from the online courses Introduction to Educational Technology and Introduction to Education completed sections of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ; Pintrich, Smith, Garcia, & McKeachie, 1991). A multiple regression analysis was performed using the MSLQ responses and final course point's data from 31 of the participants in the two online courses. No significant results for the independent variables of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and goal orientation in predicting student performance in the two online courses were found. Further data analysis found significant positive correlations between the independent variables self-efficacy, self-regulation, and goal orientation.

Book excerpt: This book provides cutting-edge, evidence-based strategies and interventions that target students’ engagement at school and with learning. Coverage begins with the background and 29-year history of the Check & Connect Model and describes the model and assessment of student engagement that served as the backdrop for conceptualizing the engagement interventions described in the book. Subsequent chapters are organized around the subtypes of student engagement – academic, behavioral, affective, cognitive – that were developed based on work with the Check & Connect Model. Principles and formal interventions are presented at both the universal and more intensive levels, consistent with the Response-to-Intervention/Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. The book concludes with a summary on the lessons learned from Check & Connect and the importance of a system that is oriented toward enhancing engagement and school completion for all students. Interventions featured in this book include: Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS). The Homework, Organization, and Planning Skills (HOPS) Intervention. The Good Behavior Game in the classroom. Check-in, Check-out (CICO). Banking Time, a dyadic intervention to improve teacher-student relationships The Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (SREP). Student Engagement is a must-have resource for researchers, professionals, and graduate students in child and school psychology, educational policy and politics, and family studies.

Book excerpt: University students’ self-efficacy or self-confidence for learning and performance is crucial for their academic achievement. However, whilst the discussion on how to improve students’ self-efficacy in education practice has been highly prioritized, less research has been conducted on how to improve people’s self-efficacy in a targeted way, especially from the perspective of individual self-improvement. The question of how self-efficacy affects academic achievement still needs to be qualitatively examined to better understand the factors that influence self-efficacy (Zhang, et al., 2015). Therefore, in this study, the aim is to explore the beliefs of Chinese international doctoral students to develop an understanding of the impact of self-efficacy on their academic achievement and the methods they adopt to improve their academic achievement at the University of Auckland. Focus group and semi-structured interviews were employed as methods to generate data. The researcher transcribed the raw data, then employed thematic analysis and narrative description to analyse the data. Findings revealed that the relationship between self-regulation and academic achievement could be positive or negative, influenced by factors such as goal orientation, motivation, self-regulation and attribution style. It was also concluded that five different self-adjusting strategies were reported by participants to improve their self-efficacy: enhancing motivation, self-regulation, adjusting goal setting, positive attribution style, and psychological self-adjustment.

Self-efficacy is also linked with higher measures of the learning goal orientation. Martocchio & Hertenstein (2003) found a statistically significant relationship between learning goal orientation and post-training self-efficacy. This study's purpose was to identify how self-efficacy and goal orientation affect transfer of training. The results of the study found that while learning occurred in the trained group, the control group learned more. Pre-test sensitization may have played a role in these results. Learning did not translate into transfer of training and no significant change in behavior occurred. The study brings to light the importance of making training relevant to the audience and creating a support system to aid in the transfer of training to change in behavior.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the interactive effects of goal orientations (the tendencies of an individual to set specific types of goals, i.e., learning or performance goals), and self-efficacy (an evaluation of one's own competence on a task) on self-set goal levels and performance in an academic context. Past research has found that learning goal orientation and self-efficacy are both positively related to the difficulty of self-selected goals and to performance whereas avoid-performance goal orientation is negatively associated with both the difficulty of self-set goals and performance. The current study found that learning goal orientation and self-efficacy were positively related to academic performance in the context of low avoid-performance goal orientation. Further, the study provides evidence of conceptual overlap between the concepts of learning goal orientation and self-efficacy and has practical implications for the implementation of motivation-focused training programs.

Book excerpt: "The importance of motivation for students in the academic setting is discussed in this research. The Social Cognitive models of motivation presented discuss four key components of student motivation: self-efficacy, attributions, intrinsic motivation, and achievement goals. Motivational beliefs and self-determination are important aspects to consider when encouraging motivation in students who struggle with learning. Several variables that affect motivation stem from social and environmental factors, teaching specific learning strategies that encourage success, formal and systematic programs for correct strategy use, task-specific feedback, connecting recent successes to work, and reinforcing effort. Using peer modeling, as well as literature, are discussed as motivational tools. Connecting the learning goals of the teacher to the students' goals is considered and can be enhanced by an academically engaging classroom. Encouraging intrinsic motivation while being cautious about the use of extrinsic rewards is discussed. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is examined as playing important roles in the motivation and inspiration of students."--leaf 5.

Book excerpt: Self-regulated learning (or self-regulation) refers to the process whereby learners personally activate and sustain cognitions, affects, and behaviours that are systematically oriented toward the attainment of learning goals. This is the first volume to integrate into a single volume all aspects of the field of self-regulation of learning and performance: basic domains, applications to content areas, instructional issues, methodological issues, and individual differences. It draws on research from such diverse areas as cognitive, educational, clinical, social, and organizational psychology. Distinguishing features include: Chapter Structure – To ensure uniformity and coherence across chapters, each chapter author addresses the theoretical ideas underlying their topic, research evidence bearing on these ideas, future research directions, and implications for educational practice. International – Because research on self-regulation is increasingly global, a significant number of interntional contributors are included (see table of contents). Readable – In order to make the book accessible to students, chapters have been carefully edited for clarity, conciseness, and organizational consistency. Expertise – All chapters are written by leading researchers from around the world who are highly regarded experts on their particular topics and are active contributors to the field.
