Book excerpt: This book provides an extensive guide for exercise and health professionals, students, scientists, sport coaches, athletes of various sports and those with a general interest in concurrent aerobic and strength training. Following a brief historical overview of the past decades of research on concurrent training, in section 1 the epigenetic as well as physiological and neuromuscular differences of aerobic and strength training are discussed. Thereafter, section 2 aims at providing an up-to-date analysis of existing explanations for the interference phenomenon, while in section 3 the training-methodological difficulties of combined aerobic and strength training are elucidated. In section 4 and 5, the theoretical considerations reviewed in previous sections will then be practically applied to specific populations, ranging from children and elderly to athletes of various sports. Concurrent Aerobic and Strength Training: Scientific Basics and Practical Applications is a novel book on one of the “hot topics” of exercise training. The Editors' highest priority is to make this book an easily understandable and at the same time scientifically supported guide for the daily practice.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relative effectiveness of functional isometric squats on the development of dynamic strength, static strength and power of college males. Ten college males volunteered for the study. The subjects trained two days per week for a total of eight weeks which consisted of a two week preconditioning period followed by a six week functional isometric squat training period. The test data were statistically treated using a paired t-test and one-way analysis of covariance. The .05 level of significance was selected for accepting or rejecting the null hypotheses. The results of the imposed training program revealed a significant increase in dynamic strength. There were no significant increases in power between groups; however, a significant increase in power was found within the functional isometric and dynamic squat training groups. The results of this study have several implications towards strength training of athletes and students enrolled in a physical education weight training activity class.

Book excerpt: ISOMETRIC EXERCISE MADE SIMPLE - Master the Techniques of Lifetime Strength, Health, and Youthful Vitality - The Complete Guide to Muscle Development and Strength Training for Everyone, as well as Conditioning with Dynamic Training Isometric or Concentric contraction are muscle contractions that do not involve moving the joints that surround the muscle. Continuous muscle stress can help develop muscle endurance and support dynamic activities. Strengthening exercises necessitate joint movement as well as lifting against resistance. Workouts involving recurrence, such as static or repetitive exercises, are useful, however isometric exercises typically include a great deal of repetition. Isometric contractions, as the name implies, are those where the muscles contract while moving the surround joints. By delivering continual tension to the muscles, it is able to develop muscle endurance as well as assist dynamic workouts. Whenever the body tries to increase strength, joints must move and resistance must be imposed. Because they entail repetition, static and repeated workouts, particularly isometric exercises, are beneficial. However, isometric exercises often require excessive repetition.
