A quasi-experimental design was used to examine the effects of Response to Intervention (RTI) on middle school students' skills in reading and academic achievement. Also, the study sought to examine how the implementation of RTI changed over time. The sample population consisted of approximately 285 students in Grades 6 through 8 and 39 staff from one middle school in middle Tennessee. Conclusions revealed that students receiving RTI did not improve significantly compared to below grade level readers that did not receive reading intervention; however, paired samples t-tests revealed intervention students in each grade level showed significant improvements in overall comprehension scores.

Response to Intervention (RtI) is an intervention model that is helping students find success at the elementary level, but there are few studies and models that are appropriate for the middle-school level in helping students access literacy skills. One of the barriers that prevent middle schools from being able to use elementary RtI practices is the need for a comprehensive literacy program that will allow students to succeed in mastering the content standards. This research investigated effective ways to implement RtI in a middle-school setting while promoting the acquisition of literacy skills. Formative assessment theory informs the problem of practice by providing the lens from which RtI and literacy integration can be achieved in the middle-school setting. The overarching research question for this study was: What is the process by which a suburban, East Coast, middle school designed and implemented Tier 1 Response to Intervention (RtI) strategies in their classrooms and what perceived impact have these strategies had on improving the literacy skills and access to content-specific knowledge for students? This research question was answered using data collected and analyzed from a descriptive, single case study of one middle school in Central Massachusetts. The findings showed that RtI is necessary for students who need extra support. Teachers felt the different aspects of the professional development they received highlighting RtI and the Workshop Model was both a positive and negative experience depending on the content area. Teachers and administrators believed there were benefits of the Workshop Model. The findings also demonstrated that literacy integration benefited all students and requires collaboration among teachers. Lastly, the findings showed that RtI required commitment from both teachers and administrators.

This quantitative study attempted to address the problem of low-income African American students from northeast Louisiana entering ninth grade with low reading skills. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate the effects of a Response to Intervention (RtI) Tier 2 literacy intervention on the academic achievement of ninth grade students reading below grade level. The research was grounded in Bloom's mastery learning theory and Dewey's child-centered learning theory. The research question was whether students that completed the literacy intervention performed better on the ninth grade state-mandated assessment than students who did not receive the intervention. The secondary data used in this ex post facto study were the ninth grade iLEAP ELA (integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program) scores as measures for the dependent variable. Students who completed the literacy intervention did not score significantly higher on the iLEAP ELA. These results indicated that the intervention that was evaluated in this study was not effective with the population involved in this research. The findings point to the need for alternative literacy interventions that may have to be customized for student populations with different remediation needs.
