Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings, entitled RESIDUAL STRESS AND STRESS RELAXATION, address the nature of residual stresses and their measurements, the sources of residual stress, stress relaxation, sub-critical crack growth in the presence of residual stress, residual stresses and properties, and research in progress. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Mr. Robert J. Sell and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many current fatigue design criteria for structural details present allowable stress ranges for specified design lives but neglect mean and residual stresses. The paper reviews published test results and shows that residual stresses and concomitant mean stresses can have a significant influence on fatigue resistance in certain cases. The beneficial effects of compressive residual stresses due to shot-peening are well-known. For example, shot-peening of non-load-carrying fillet-welded carbon steel and butt-welded constructional alloy steel has increased the fatigue strengths at two million cycles by 20 to 40 percent. Also, the fatigue resistance of weldments can be influenced significantly by the presence of residual stresses, provided the stress ratio is equal to or less than zero and the lives are greater than one million cycles. The fatigue strength of transverse butt welds with reinforcement intact at two million cycles has been increased by 12 percent and 24 to 33 percent for stress ratios of, respectively, 0 and -1 through thermal stress relief. Such improvement has also been shown for longitudinal non-load-carrying fillet welds (for example, attachments, gussets, etc.) where the increases in fatigue strength at two million cycles due to thermal stress relief for stress ratios of 0, -1, and -4 were, respectively, 15, 57, and 168 percent.
Book Synopsis IIW Recommendations On Methods for Improving the Fatigue Strength of Welded Joints by : P J Haagensen
Download or read book IIW Recommendations On Methods for Improving the Fatigue Strength of Welded Joints written by P J Haagensen and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weld toe is a primary source of fatigue cracking because of the severity of the stress concentration it produces. Weld toe improvement can increase the fatigue strength of new structures significantly. It can also be used to repair or upgrade existing structures. However, in practice there have been wide variations in the actual improvements in fatigue strength achieved. Based on an extensive testing programme organised by the IIW, this report reviews the main methods for weld toe improvement to increase fatigue strength: burr grinding, TIG dressing and hammer and needle peening. The report provides specifications for the practical use of each method, including equipment, weld preparation and operation. It also offers guidance on inspection, quality control and training as well as assessments of fatigue strength and thickness effects possible with each technique. IIW recommendations on methods for improving the fatigue strength of welded joints will allow a more consistent use of these methods and more predictable increases in fatigue strength. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Springer Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics documents both the traditional techniques as well as the new methods for experimental studies of materials, components, and structures. The emergence of new materials and new disciplines, together with the escalating use of on- and off-line computers for rapid data processing and the combined use of experimental and numerical techniques have greatly expanded the capabilities of experimental mechanics. New exciting topics are included on biological materials, MEMS and NEMS, nanoindentation, digital photomechanics, photoacoustic characterization, and atomic force microscopy in experimental solid mechanics. Presenting complete instructions to various areas of experimental solid mechanics, guidance to detailed expositions in important references, and a description of state-of-the-art applications in important technical areas, this thoroughly revised and updated edition is an excellent reference to a widespread academic, industrial, and professional engineering audience.

Book Synopsis Fatigue of Metals by : P. G. Forrest
Download or read book Fatigue of Metals written by P. G. Forrest and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of Metals provides a general account of the failure of metals due to fatigue, a subject of great practical importance in the field of engineering and metallurgy. The book covers a wide range of topics on the study of the fatigue of metals. The text presents in the first three chapters the characteristics and detection of fatigue fractures; methods of fatigue testing; and the fatigue strengths of different materials. The resistance of materials to fatigue under complex stress; the determination and effects of stress concentration; influence of surface treatment on fatigue strength; and effects of corrosion and temperature are also studied in detail. In relation to the previous chapters of fatigue information, a chapter is devoted to engineering design to prevent fatigue. The last two chapters provide a brief historical survey of the developments of the study of the mechanism of fatigue and fatigue of non-metallic materials such as wood, plastic, rubber, glass, and concrete. Mechanical engineers, designers, metallurgists, researchers, and students will find the book as a good reference material.
