Book excerpt: This 723-item bibliography lists materials on teacher effectiveness research published from 1978 to early 1984. Reference to some earlier works of significance is also included. Teacher effectiveness research is here defined to include principally studies conducted in the presage-context-process-product tradition in an attempt to determine relationships between teacher behaviors and students' cognitive and affective attainments. The bibliography deals with specific aspects of the topic: (1) classroom climate, warmth, enthusiasm; (2) classroom management; (3) direct instruction; (4) expectations; (5) instructional time; (6) mastery learning; (7) nonverbal behavior; (8) questions, turn allocation, and wait time; (9) reinforcement, feedback, praise, behavior modification; and (10) structure, planning, decision making, and clarity. Book excerpt: Understanding and enforcing proper discipline has been a barrier to effective behavior modification. Inappropriate interventions can promote unwanted behaviors that often detract from a successful learning environment. Adopting a prevention-oriented approach like School Wide Positive Behavioral Support (SWPBS) plans focus on improving behavioral as well academic results within schools. This study aims to prove that SWPBS plans increase the success rate of an institution. As success rates of schools are evaluated using standardized test scores, this study analyzes the relationship between positive reinforcement and students’ performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) in 21 Pennsylvania middle schools from 2015-2018. English and Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science PSSA scores two years before and two years after implementation of a SWPBS plan are compared to PSSA scores of schools in similar size and geographical location that did not implement a SWPBS plan. This data is also compared to research from other studies to draw overarching conclusions to describe the importance of positive reinforcement in school success. Results from this study show that PSSA scores dropped slightly in Math and English but scores dropped significantly in Science following the first implements of a SWPBS. Future studies need to be conducted before an overarching conclusion can be made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Behavior Modification, Volume 5, is a multidisciplinary serial publication that encompasses the contributions of psychology, psychiatry, social work, speech therapy, education, and rehabilitation. This serial aims to meet the need for a review publication that undertakes to present yearly in-depth evaluations that include a scholarly examination of theoretical underpinnings, a careful survey of research findings, and a comparative analysis of existing techniques and methodologies. The discussions center on a wide spectrum of child and adult disorders. The book opens with a chapter on the assessment and treatment of minimal dating behavior in college students. This is followed by separate chapters on methods of behavioral control of excessive drinking; behavioral analysis and treatment of child noncompliance to parental requests; and behavioral group therapy. Subsequent chapters deal with the conceptual underpinnings of research in children's self-management and treatment strategies; the assessment and therapeutic functions of self-monitoring; and behavioral treatment in homosexuality.

Book excerpt: Test-wise individuals often score higher than others of equal ability who do not use effective test-taking skills. They use their knowledge of specific test formats and testing situations to show what they know! Test-taking skills training teaches general concepts about test formats and other conditions of testing. Teaching Test-Taking Skills aims to improve the validity of the test. It makes scores more accurately reflect what students really know by making sure that students lose points only because they do not know the information. Teachers can focus on whether poor performance truly reflects students' low levels of knowledge or merely poor skills in applying what they know to tests. The authors have found that younger students, law-achieving students of all ages, and students from lower socioeconomic or minority backgrounds benefit particularly from test-taking skills training. Gains of 10-15 percentile points or six months of school achievement are common. Some individual gains are much greater.
