When grazing and non-grazing protozoa were equilibrated with aqueous polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); no difference in equilibration time was observed, indicating that diffusion was the primary uptake pathway. The transition size of an organism where rates of diffusive and ingested uptake are equivalent was determined. Enhanced CB diffusive fluxes across the diffusive boundary layer were observed due to CB-DOC complex disassociation within this layer. Temporal dynamics of DOC, surfactants, lipo-polysaccharides and cells were monitored in protozoan cultures as a function of protozoan species and prey growth substrate. Book excerpt: "This thesis examines the effect of intracellular digestion by phagotrophic organisms (protozoan grazers) on the solid/liquid partitioning and speciation of strongly hydrolyzed, particle-reactive trace metals, including Fe and Th. A series of experiments was carried Out in model systems in order to determine the effect of grazer-mediated transformations on trace metals associated with cellular phases. Principle findings included mobilization of extracellular as well as intracellular trace metals by protists, apparent generation of metal-organic complexes, and decoupling of metal and carbon cycling. Studies of the effect of grazers on colloidal iron oxide (ferrihydrite) indicated that protozoan grazing can increase the dissolution rate of iron oxide phases through phagotrophic ingestion. As part of this work a novel tracer technique was 133 developed, based on the synthesis of colloidal ferrihydrite impregnated with Ba-133 as an inert tracer. This technique was shown to be a sensitive indicator for the extent of ferrihydrite dissolution/alteration by a variety of mechanisms. Using this technique, grazing by natural protistan assemblages was shown to enhance the dissolution rate of colloidal ferrihydrite over that in non-grazing controls. when integrated temporally over the euphotic zone, protozoan grazing may equal or exceed photoreduction as a pathway for iron oxide dissolution. ." -- Stinet.

Book excerpt: In the marine environment, single-celled, microscopic, plant-like organisms naturally occur in the well-lit surface layer of any body of water. These organisms, referred to as phytoplankton or microalgae, form the base of the food web upon which nearly all other marine organisms depend. Algal bloom is a rapid increase in or accumulation of the population of about 300 species of algae due to excess nutrients (eutrophication), and is of major global interest as it causes reduction in species diversity, abrupt changes in water quality, and discoloration of the water (green, yellow, brown or red) depending on the species of algae and the type of pigments they contain. Dying blooms can also be an environmental concern as when the cells sink and decay, bacteria break down the organic material, which in turn strips oxygen from the water. This microbial oxygen demand at times leads to very low oxygen levels in the bottom waters, harming aquatic life. Documentation of this sporadic high abundance of algae, together with the significant species richness of the diatoms, requires comprehensive studies in the Sundarban coastal environment, which is facing severe degradation due to natural & anthropogenic stressors. In addition, a better understanding of the effects of algal blooms on seafood quality, the complex biological, chemical and physical interactions and subsequent effects on trophodynamics is needed to develop strategies for effective coastal zone management. The book discusses the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by the dinoflagellates of the genus Alexandrium and Karenia, or diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, which have large and varied impacts on marine ecosystems (such as large-scale marine mortality events that have been associated with various types of shellfish poisonings) depending on the species involved, the environment where they are found, and the mechanism by which they exert negative effects. HABs represent a major environmental problem in all regions of the U.S., and their occurrence is on the rise due to increased nutrient pollution. HABs have severe impacts on human health, aquatic ecosystems, and the economy. Such blooms, known colloquially as red tides due to their red or brown hues, are increasing in frequency and magnitude worldwide as a result of changes in oceanic climate, increased coastal eutrophication and enhanced long-distance dispersal in ballast water. As such, the book offers an in-depth account of the complex biological, chemical and physical interactions of the algal blooms (both innocuous and harmful ones). It also discusses the highly topical issue of the impact of global climate change on the frequency and severity of HABs in the context of alterations in temperature, stratification, light and ocean acidification. Book excerpt: The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointed than might have been expected. Thus we welcomed the approach from the NATO Marine Sciences Programme Panel and the encouragement from F.R. Harden Jones to develop a proprosal for, and ultimately to organize, a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on mechanisms of fish migration. Substantial progress had been made with descriptive, analytical and predictive approaches to fish migration since the appearance of "Fish ~ligration." Both because of the progress and the often conflicting results of research, we felt that the time was again right and the effort justified to synthesize and to critically assess our knowledge. Our ultimate aim was to identify the gains and shortcomings and to develop testable hypotheses for the next decade or two.
